PLUMBING

I am experienced in all types of plumbing, both residential and commercial, new homes and development.

Leaking taps are a common problem. Leaving it dripping costs you money and wastes water which can be up to 24,000 litres of water a year. This a quick fix for you to save money.

Updating your taps can make your sink and bathroom appear more modern. They can also be more functional and water saving.

Leaking toilets can waste more water than you think, turn it off at the valve until a plumber arrives.

Blocked sewerage drains can occur anywhere inside a drain and not necessarily at one fixture. They often can’t be cleared easily and require special drain clearing tools. Remember to keep drains clear of hair and items that should be put in the bin, not down the drain.

Burst pipes are a common problem especially in homes built in the 60s and 70s. Pipes can wear out with age, can be damaged accidently or through storm damage. Damp areas, dark patches and soft ground are all indications that you may have a leak outside.

Call me immediately you notice any water damage to prevent any further problems.

Old galvanised water pipes can contain lead or become rusty, affecting the taste of the water. They can also clog, causing inadequate water pressure. If you need advice to see if you need new water pipes, contact Melbourne Plumbing Systems for a free quote.

Stormwater drains drain rain and ground water. Gutters and pits not regularly cleaned and maintained can collect debris, sediment and other small objects causing a blockage in the stormwater system.

Tree root damage to drain pipes can be very expensive if allowed to go unfixed. This is a very common problem in older homes with old earthenware terracotta piping. Call me for advice and prevention of further damage.

Water saving devices can save you money around the home, business or garden. I can advise you on what can work for you.

Backflow testing can be carried out to prevent waste water flowing back into your clean water supply. Installing a backflow prevention device ensures that water from a property cannot be drawn back into the main drinking water supply.

Recycled water systems. Rain water is an easy and effective way to save your water supply and reduce the amount of mains water you use. Rainwater can be used for flushing the toilet, washing clothes, watering the garden and washing the car.

Also see below for bathroom, kitchen and laundry renovations.

HOT WATER

I can install, repair and maintain electric, gas or solar hot water systems.

Electric water heaters contribute most to greenhouse gas emissions. The Australian Government encourages alternative methods of heating hot water. Electric water heaters are the cheapest to buy but the most expensive to run.

Gas hot water systems are more energy efficient than electric. If you have natural gas, the initial outlay may be worth the savings on the running costs. Gas hot water systems use 25 to 33% less greenhouse gases than electric water heaters.

Solar hot water systems are environmentally friendly and can save you money in the long run. They are more expensive to buy and install, but running costs are significantly lower.

You don’t necessarily have to have access to continuous sunshine as additional panels can be bought to accommodate the cooler months.

If you like the idea of a renewable energy source, solar could be the way to go.

Gas and electric hot water tanks should be replaced before they stop working. Nobody wants the inconvenience of running out of hot water. Signs of problems can include rust or corrosion, lack of water temperature and water leaking from the bottom of the tank.

Call us for advice on your current hot water system or if you are considering a change to gas or solar. I am fully licensed in gas plumbing.

HEATING

I can install, repair and maintain electric, gas and solar heating systems and appliances.

Space heaters are the way to go if you don’t require your whole home to be heated. They are convenient for heating up to 1 to 2 specific rooms.

Gas space heaters have no hot surfaces and are therefore great for families. Also, no burnt fume emissions are emitted into the house.

GAS

I install, repair and maintain gas heaters, fireplaces and appliances, including wall furnaces.

Gas cook tops and ovens can be installed with natural gas or LPG gas bottles.

Gas leak detection can be hazardous and should be carried out by a licensed gas fitter or licensed gas plumber such as Melbourne Plumbing Systems. You should familiarise yourself with your gas shut-off valve and call me immediately you suspect a leak.

ROOFTING AND GUTTERING

I can replace or repair your roofing or flashing. You may have noticed cracked plaster or a water mark on your ceiling. These are signs of a leaking roof. Great care needs to be taken when walking in the attic or on the roof. Call me to investigate the source of the problem.

Guttering can be cleaned, repaired or replaced. It’s important to keep your gutters clear from leaf clutter, especially during our hot summers. Dried leaves and debris can ignite. In heavy downfalls leaves and debris can block the flow of water.

I can install drainpipes, downpipes and pumps. Water from the roof needs to be routed away from the house to protect its foundations and footings. If the house is on stumps, rainwater needs to be kept way from entering under the house and causing damp problems.

Hot water solar panels can be installed, saving you money in the long run.

LEAK DETECTION

Water leaks can cause damage and waste resources and money.

Gas leaks can be hazardous and require the trained skills and tools of a licensed plumber such as Melbourne Plumbing Systems.

Carbon monoxide testing and detection can be carried out to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning or even death. Carbon monoxide is known as the silent killer as it is an odourless and tasteless gas. Call me immediately you suspect a gas leak.

BATHROOM, KITCHEN AND LAUNDRY RENOVATIONS

I can carry out all plumbing requirements for your renovations including installation of:

  • Showers
  • Cubicles
  • Baths
  • Basins
  • Sinks
  • Taps
  • Toilets & cisterns
  • Towel rails

I can also carry out basic tiling.

RENEWALS

I can replace your old rusted galvanised water pipes which rust with age. Mineral build-up can clog the pipe and affect the flow of the water pressure. It also discolours the water, which can leave clothes looking dirty after a wash.

Gas renewals. I can replace your old galvanised water pipes, which rust internally causing gas flow problems.

Stormwater/sewer renewals. I can replace your old earthenware terracotta pipes to PVC.

Tree roots find their way into the old earthenware system through the mortar joints to find water. Depending on how severe the problem is, usually the best way to fix it is to renew the whole system to pvc. With pvc the tree roots have no way of entering through these joints.
