Hi my name is Ngarino Tumai. I have been hairdressing for 25yrs, I am passionate about training and ensuring my team is always up to date on the latest trends. Education and specialized training has always been at the forefront of my mission to inspire my staff, making them creative and impassioned hairdressers. I not only teach my staff passion for hairdressing but to also have passion for people. When my client’s eyes light up because of how beautiful they look, then that’s when I feel ‘HOPE and BEAUTY’ has been delivered.

With my salon that issituated in Engadine south Sydney, we invite you into an environment that is totally about you. Where my staff and I will give you undivided attention to pamper you and make you feel comfortable. We will all work together with you to come up with your desired colour and style that suits you, a style that is easy to manage at home with minimal effort for you to achieve time and time again.

All the while you will be in a comfortable chair with a cutting area made up especially for you whilst watching a movie on your own personal TV screen which is situated on the wall near every station.

We will not compromise on quality, nor will we cut corners therefore we use products that are of high standard which include De Lorenzo, Peri Haddad and Brazilian Cacau Keratin Hair Straightening, Kerasys and Affinage to help create and keep you and your hair beautiful.

So together with our range of professional product and our passionate, creative, designers we will deliver you Hope and Beauty. You will be made to feel at home for my salon is your salon.

Meet The Staff

Ngarino Tumai

wow where do I start. let’s start from 1987,  I was 15yrs old and like any normal child I was at school but I was only there for sports, don’t get me wrong I did like some other subjects but manly sports. August holidays were fast approaching and I didn’t want it to be another boring couple of weeks as we didn’t have much money, so I went home and told my dad I wasn’t going back to school, I wanted to get a job. Now knowing me I have always chased money but I needed to do something I was going to be passionate about. I didn’t want to be like everyone else in my year and go work at some factory so I looked in the paper and saw a hairdressing  apprentiship up for grabs hmmm since I use to cut my own hair how about I give this ago. Now for those who knew me they would be thinking how the hell are you going to be a hairdresser,  little did they know on how I use to think.

Starting on $90.00 for 5 and a half days work a week, well it wasn’t much but I had bigger plans for the future. By the time my first year was over, I was sick of shampooing hair making coffee or tea and sweeping floors, little did I know that this is one of the most important duties when it comes to looking after customers and It’s all part of the end result. For the salon needs to sparkle and the coffee or tea needs to taste great, the shampoo has to be relaxing and soothing.

By the second year I learnt how to cut hair with precession and accuracy and in 1989 (as an apprentice) I had to compete in the senior men’s competition in Wanganui; and WON. We worked hard to get there but it all payed off in the end. I then went on to master foundation, shape and structure of hair ladies styles, although I did not return to the competition stage it was only because I was in competition with myself.

I opened my first salon in 1991 at 19 yrs old and never looked back, but let’s face it in the early 90s there was not much going on with fashion and that also related to hair so I decided to get out of the hair business for a while and travel the world as a dancer. Moving here to Australia in 1996 I based myself in Surfers Paradise and travelled with a dance troupe for about 4 years off and on, around the world before moving to Sydney in 2000 and travelling with another dance troupe for a further 6 or so years.

It is now 2007 and it was time to get back to do what I started, I came home and got my hand back into hairdressing. WOW how much things had changed everything I dreamed hairdressing would be. Fleer, artistic fleer disconnection no rules or as it would seem. Being free to make colours up as you go, being able to counter warmth or cool shades to control undertones and put colour where ever you need. The world is our oyster. But I never forget where I came from and that is without customer serves without all the little things everything will fall apart but with everything in place and being a master of listening to people and what they are trying to achieve and the lifestyles they live.

Then HOPE and BEAUTY will shine by the time my clients walk out of my salon. It’s now 2011 our salon is going great I got married to my beautiful wife last year in September after being together for 10 years and I wouldn’t be anywhere else in the world. I have been hairdressing for 10years, and in 3 words I would say I love it. It is a chance for me to give back to my clients, to make them feel beautiful and to see the smile on their faces as they walk out the door, it’s a rush of mine that I chase with every customer of mine.

Working here at Minx Hair and Body group has been an easy transition as the passion for service and the artistic ability is second to none, but it’s a warm inviting salon with a homely feel.

We all work well together as a team and all are welcome to join us in our fun filled days, to share a story or movie, maybe you would just like to sit relax and indulge.

I am a second year apprentice and have been working at minx hair and body group from the start of my apprentiship.

Ngarino is a wonderful boss and an inspiration to watch at his craft I love to meet and surround myself with great people this is one of the reasons why I wanted to become a hairdresser.

It’s not just about cutting hair or applying colours it’s about carefully planning what you are trying to achieve then articulately putting that plan into action.

I love it when Ngarino’s clients come in and there wanting us to weave our magic and once we have finished, the look on their face totally changes from an everyday expression to a wow I feel hot (can I say that) or should I say beautiful.

I love watching, observing, absorbing everything that is going on so one day I can be the creator of great styles and I can sit back after the day and say I just made all my customers smile and feel beautiful. Wow now that’s the rush I am after.
