My name is Lauren and I live on the Sunshine Coast with my husband, Paul, and our two children.
My cloth journey started in 2010 with the birth of my daughter Sienna. She was in cloth full time from the day that we brought her home from hospital. Originally she was in terry towelling squares but I found that it was a struggle to find clothes that accommodated her cloth bum. At around 6 weeks of age Bonnibuns was having a sale and I decided to purchase 6 nappies. WOW! I was super impressed with the fit, how easy they were to use and care for. I started accumulating more and more until she was in modern cloth full time.
My son, Blake, was born at the end of 2013 and was in cloth from the moment he was born. Even though Sienna and Blake are very different shapes and sizes I have found that Bonnibuns have been a great fit on them both. Modern cloth nappies have just become part of our daily routine – even using them when camping or away on holidays. Over 5 years later and those 6 napppies that I originally bought are still going strong.
Due to my love of the Bonnibuns nappy I was pleased to be able to purchase the business from Bonny. I know it is a great quality product which I am happy to stand behind.
Bonnibuns History
Original owner and creator of Bonnibuns, Bonny, was a stay at home mum of three beautiful girls. She wanted to use the most comfortable and environmentaly friendly nappies available. She had used traditional cloth nappies with her 1st daughter and was determined to find an easier way. After watching a close friend use MCN’s,Bonny was inspired to create her own nappies before the birth of her 2nd daughter. By the time her 3rd daughter was born, Bonnibuns had been adorning babies bottoms worldwide for almost 4 years!
Bonnibuns started out, being created in Bonny’s lounge room! Due to an enormous workload it was decided to have some of the products made in a fair trade factory offshore. Bonny was careful to choose a family owned factory, that believed in and enforced fair conditions and wages for their workers.
Bonny loved creating wonderful nappies for babíes and in turn knew that not only are babies wearing a reliable, high quality nappy, but that she had also done her bit in reducing ever growing landfill.

THE LINGO Bonnibuns Workhorse Nappies, are made to a One Size Fits Most 4-18kg pattern. They have a built in layer of absorbency inside the base, and a long, foldover, snap in insert (suedecloth topped) that snaps inside the shel of the nappy. This makes up 6 layers of absorbency. See diagram below.
Bonnibuns Rapid Dry Nappies are made to the same One Size Fits Most 4-18kg pattern. The outer is a PUL shell, with a suedecloth topped trifold, that snaps into the shell of the nappy, making it “rapid to dry”. See diagram below
Pocket Nappy – Pocket nappies consist of an outer fitted shell sewn to a liner leaving a “pocket” at the top, pocket nappies allow for adjustment of the absorbency level by changing how much absorbent material is stuffed into the nappy. The water-resistant shell might be PUL (polyurethane laminated fabric)with a high quality fleece or suedecloth. Pocket nappies can be stuffed with anything absorbent! Inserts may be specially made stuff-ins, bamboo, cotton, hemp flats or prefolds, or microfibre boosters.
Booster – Extra material (bamboo, hemp, terry) used in any nappy to provide extra absorbency.
Insert – A long piece of bamboo, that folds in half, and snaps into the nappy to provide absorbency.
Trifold – A square of bamboo, folded into 3, that either snaps into the shell of a nappy, or can be “stuffed” inside a pocket.
Wicking – Process of moisture moving through a fabric.
WHAT DOES THAT FABRIC DO? Bamboo –
Yarn made from the bamboo plant that is woven into a fleece. It is very soft to touch, very absorbent, about 6 x more absorbent than cotton! It is naturally antifungal and antibacterial. Bamboo is a highly renewable resource making this fabric very environmentally friendly.
Polyurethane Laminate (PUL) –
Is a laminate that is applied to fabric to make it waterproof yet gives fabric the ability to still breathe.
Microfleece/Suedecloth –
Soft synthetic fabric. The material is Hydrophobic, meaning that it does not absorb any liquid and remains dry to touch. Fleece is used inside nappies because it wicks moisture away from baby’s skin to keep it dry.
Minky –
A poly fabric that is super soft to touch. Often used on the outer of nappies lined with PUL.
Malden Mills Fleece –
Windpro/WindBloc are different types of heavy weight fleece. It is the density of the fleece that makes these fabrics water resistant. Fleece isnt waterproof. It is breathable and the synthetic equivalent of wool making it ideal for night nappies.
Nappy Care Caring for your Bonnibuns Nappies is easy. Follow our easy care guide below.
Preparing Your Nappies Prior to using your Bonnibuns nappies they require 3-5 washes for the bamboo to reach its maximum absorbency – the nappies do not need to be dried in between these washes.
Washing Place any solids into the toilet. Hand rinse nappy and store in a dry nappy bucket/container. DO NOT SOAK Wash nappies on a normal (cold/warm – up to 50 degrees) cycle with recommended detergent quantity for load size. Adding an extra rinse cycle will help prevent any detergent build up. Line dry nappies with the inner facing the sun for best results. Inserts/boosters may be tumble dried on a low heat however it isn’t recommended long term as it can shorten the life of your nappies.
Strip Washing From time to time, you may find your nappies are not as absorbent as they once were. Detergents, powders and other products can build up over time causing liquid to repel – a strip wash will help eliminate this build up. Place all your nappies and inserts/trifolds into a hot wash with a couple of drops of washing up liquid and wash as normal with an extra rinse cycle. Line dry as normal.
