MYOTHERAPY
Myotherapy is an advanced form of Remedial Massage which focuses on the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal pain and associated conditions.
Myotherapy utilises the tools of Remedial Massage and expands on them by incorporating other modalities such as Dry Needling, Myofascial Release, Cupping & Corrective Exercise.
DRY NEEDLING
Dry needling is used in the treatment of active and latent Myofascial trigger points. It’s effects can include; deactivating trigger points, reducing or eliminating pain, increasing blood flow, increasing range of movement and re-education of the correct neuromuscular patterns. Dry needling employs the use of a small-diameter needle injected into a trigger point, which can instantly release the tension of that muscle by deactivating the active/latent trigger point.
Dry needling is a fantastic alternative to Deep Tissue or Remedial Massage as it can relieve tension and pain in the effected muscles without heavy hand work which can leave you feeling fatigued or ‘beaten up’.
MYOFASCIAL CUPPING
Cupping is a treatment that is performed by applying a cup to the skins surface. The air within the cup is evacuated to create a vacuum which pulls the skin inside the cup, increasing blood flow to the area being treated. This creates negative pressure that lifts the muscle tissue and drains excess toxins and fluids, mobilising blood flow to promote the healing of a broad range of medial ailments. During the treatment the patient experiences a mild pulling sensation which in turn calms the sympathetic nerves, promoting a deep sense of relaxation throughout the body.
Cupping is used to treat muscle pain, and deactivate active trigger points, relieve tight fascial and connective tissue. Cupping is a fantastic alternate treatment when the patient cannot handle the initial pressure of a deep tissue massage. Cupping helps alleviate the localised pain and allow the therapist to apply pressure without discomfort.
Other treatable conditions also include (but not limited to) Arthritis, Asthma, Boils, Bruises, Digestive problems, Colds, relief from Scoliosis and more.
REMEDIAL MASSAGE
Remedial massage is the process of manipulating the soft tissues and muscles of the body to target and treat specific problems such as tension, strain, and immobility. Basically, ‘fixing’ mechanical problems that have occurred throughout the body. Soft and deep tissue manipulation are performed to increase blood flow to the injured tissues and affected areas of the body, relieving tension and relaxing contraction and spasms that have occurred. This results in an increase in the rate of repair and range of movement.
Key benefits of remedial massage include:
Improvement in muscle tone Increase in mobility and range of movement Stimulation of cell growth, influencing soft tissue repair Increasing blood circulation allowing toxins in the muscles to be moved Calming of the peripheral and sympathetic nervous system Reduced tension, aches and pain
MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a very specific massage technique (timing, pressure and direction) which helps to ensure our bodies ability to rejuvenate and establish resistance to all types of stress, it encourages the natural circulation of lymph through the body.
It is not a muscular massage but a harmonious manual treatment using mild mechanical stretching of the connective tissue to facilitate decongestion of lymph ducts. This allows regenerative fluid to flow and improves circulation and toxin removal as well as carrying vital substances to areas where it is needed, thus increasing healing times.
The physiological effects of MLD include:
• Nervous system: MLD stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing pain by sedating sensory nerve endings. It also has an analgesic/anti inflammatory effect. MLD also relaxes tonic organs and muscles softening tissues.
• Immune system: the passage of lymph in the lymph nodes stimulates the immune system. According to research conducted by Bruno Chikly the body produces 30% more immuno competent cells post MLD. Fluid circulation and elimination: by activating lymph function and circulation there is a reduction of fluid and greater elimination of fluid from the interstitial tissues. This leads to greater tissue health and easier lymphatic flow.
Listed below are a few applications for MLD:
• fluid retention
• lymphoedema
• sinusitis/hay fever
• dentistry
• liposculpture
• breast surgery
(augmentation, segmental, simple and total mastectomy)
• neurology – migraines
