People often ask me how my business grew so quickly, and I think there is no such thing as an overnight success. There have been many late nights, and many times when I have questioned if I had the skills it takes to build a business from scratch. However I knew I had the passion for the industry, and I was willing to do “whatever it takes” to make Shea Michelle the success I knew it could be.
After heading straight into the real estate industry a week after completing my VCE, I had to quickly adjust to full-time work in a fast-paced, corporate environment. Working seven days a week at such a young age in an industry where personal appearance and presentation was a critical part of success, I needed to streamline my morning routine and save as many minutes in front of the mirror as I could. Eyelash extensions became my new best friend.
Beauty was always something I was interested in. Being around a glamorous mum and sister who were both immaculate at all times, colouring my Mum’s and Grandma’s hair at age 14 and applying make-up at family functions for my Aunties, I found I had a natural talent for hair and beauty treatments.
After deciding beauty was where my true passion lay, I began training in the delicate art of eyelash application. It was immediately obvious that I was a natural. So while still working in my “real” job, the one with the secure future and the good pay cheque, I would come home at night and, working from my parents’ dining room until late into the evening, I would apply eyelashes on my small but burgeoning clientele.
As the months went by and my reputation grew, my phone started to ring that little bit more often. The appointments started to become too frequent to fit in after work so I decided to take the plunge – goodbye real estate, goodbye secure income, hello lash world! 
Who would have thought that a monthly appointment at a salon would lead me into the world of lashes and my very own business? However, after four years working alongside Melbourne’s top real estate sales agents, I decided to take that leap into owning and operating my own business in an career that was a polar opposite to the path I had been heading down. But I have never regretted that decision – I knew that if I followed my passion, I would succeed!
Seven years on, and thousands upon thousands of lashes later, I now have a well-established and loyal client base from Melbourne’s Inner East and beyond. Located in the prestigious, leafy suburb of Balwyn, I have well and truly outgrown my parents’ dining room and my business continues to grow year by year.
I now offer eyebrow styling and cosmetic eyebrow tattooing. Goodbye panda eyes!! I also provide a very popular, well-recognised training and mentor program for women wanting to start their own lash business from home or to increase their in-salon services. I now have my own range of lash supply products that are of the highest quality and in constant demand from other lash stylists.
I love meeting new people and many of my clients have become friends. I am highly professional in my approach to understanding each individual’s needs and this means that any client visiting my beautiful salon is guaranteed a rewarding experience. I hope you will visit me soon.
