Exfoliate before your spray tan. The spray tanning solution is affected by dead skin cells that accumulate on your skin. The more dead skin cells present, the sooner the solution will wear off. If you exfoliate before your tanning treatment, the layer of dead skin cells will be thinner and your spray tan will last longer. It is important to use either an exfoliating glove or products that don’t contain oils as these can create a barrier on your skin that prevent the tanning solution from penetrating to skin level.
Don’t wear any deodorant, perfume, moisturiser or make-up before spray tanning. Many deodorants or perfumes will also prevent the spray tanning solution penetrating to skin level. Others can cause the armpits to turn green. Make-up and moisturisers can act as barriers, so you are encouraged to remove these before your tan.
Don’t wax or shave prior to your tan. Shaving or waxing your legs at least a day or two prior to the spray tan treatment is encouraged. The solutions used contain bronzer that can get into the newly created pores and can give you a ‘spotty’ look.
Don’t shower for at least 2 hours. Depending on what tanning solution has been used affects the time period the tan can be left before showering. Most of the solutions are 2 hour tans and it is recommended to leave them for a minimum of 2 hours after application. It is not recommended to leave them for any longer than 4 hours. On the day you will be informed what solution has been used.
Showering after my tan. When you shower after your spray tan do not wash with soap or shower gel as this can remove the solution. Let the water wash the bronzer off, gently rubbing with your hands if needed. Don’t panic when you step out of the shower and realise your tan is now a lot lighter – it continues to develop for 8 hours after showering.
Make sure you only pat yourself dry with a towel after showering, as rubbing can remove more dead skin cells and your spray tan. After your first shower you can use cleaning products. Bar soaps or high pH products can strip your tan, using a shower gel will be fine but make sure it’s not one with exfoliation seeds.
Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise! To keep a longer lasting tan you must moisturise after every shower, and whenever you feel your skin is getting dry. It’s the key to keeping a longer lasting tan!
Spray tans can last for 7-14 days if cared for correctly!
