Backflow Prevention Backflow refers to the reverse flow of water in a supply pipe. The most likely cause of backflow is a drop-in pressure or if there is a problem or break in the water mains. When backflow occurs, there is the potential for hazardous substances to be mixed in with the potable water supply. If this happens, it causes contamination and can be harmful to people’s health.
It is a requirement of WA law that backflow prevention devices need to be installed on all properties where there is a medium to high risk of contamination of drinkable water by a reverse flow of contaminants and/or chemicals.
There are three areas that backflow devices can be installed. Firstly, at the property boundary (containment protection), secondly at a group of potential hazards (Zone protection) and thirdly at and individual hazard (individual protection). Once the device has been installed, tested at commissioning, it was must be serviced every 12 months by a Licensed Plumber who is qualified to do the testing. A report will then be sent to the Water Corporation as a part of the testing procedure.
NOTE: If yearly testing does not occur, property owners will be issued with a non-compliance notice from the Water Corporation and they risk a possible fine.
