Piercing Jewellery Materials
Studex Surgical Stainless Steel
Studex uses only the finest high grade stainless steel available in the manufacturing of its ear piercing studs. This material is categorised as surgical grade stainless steel.
Surgical stainless steel is a particularly effective material for manufacturing jewellery where long term contact with the skin is required.
The Studex ear piercing studs are manufactured using this stainless steel in order to afford the consumer the greatest protection possible against common hazards such as allergies and reactions with the skin.
Studex surgical stainless steel studs are high quality products which combine the look with durability and due to the strong bonding action found in the metallurgic properties of this material; it prevents any sensitising though elements such as nickel leaching into the skin.
Because of these properties, surgical grade stainless steel is regarded as one of the best materials to use in the manufacture of ear piercing earrings. Studex surgical stainless steel is tumbled and highly polished after the jewellery is manufactured.
The System 75 ear piercing system uses 316 grade surgical stainless steel. This is the same grade that is widely used in the body piercing industry throughout the world for almost all initial body piercing.
Studex 24k Gold Plating
Studex uses only pure 24 carat (24k) hard gold plating. After the surgical stainless steel ear piercing studs are manufactured and polished they are plated with 24k pure gold which gives a very high luster and will not wear off even after prolonged wear.
Studex Titanium
Studex uses only the finest high grade titanium available, categorised as implant grade G23 titanium.
The Studex titanium ear piercing studs are manufactured using this material as it is inert to the body, meaning that it is non-irritating to body tissue.
Titanium is also used for surgical implants as it is hypo-allergenic, very strong and light weight. It is very seldom that titanium will cause any irritation.
Titanium was discovered in 1791 and was named from the Greek Titans “Son of Earth”
Studex titanium is highly polished and has a slightly darker colour than surgical stainless steel. Champagne titanium is a unique process that provides a lustrous and attractive light gold wash colour.
Medisept Titanium
Medisept nose piercing studs are manufactured using the finest high grade titanium available, categorised as implant grade G23 titanium.
The titanium material is inert to the body, meaning that it is non-irritating to body tissue.
Medisept titanium is highly polished and has a slightly darker colour than surgical stainless steel.
Champagne titanium is a unique process that provides a lustrous and attractive light gold colour which is particularly attractive on the nose. Medisept Nose Studs are 18 gauge.
X8 Body Jewellery
The X8 body jewellery brand uses highly polished 316L surgical stainless steel for the bulk jewellery and fashion jewellery styles.
This is the same grade that is widely used in the body piercing industry throughout the world for almost all initial body piercing.
The X8 body jewellery range also includes polycarbonate retainers for the nose, eyebrow, lip and tongue.
Polycarbonate is a flexible translucent polymer material that does not contain nickel.
Polycarbonate items are made with a very smooth finish and are used to hold the piercing site open when metal jewellery is not being worn.
The piercing site must be healed to wear a retainer as these items are generally not sterilised. Initial piercing jewellery should never be replaced until the piercing is completely healed.
Piercing Training
Piercing Fact Sheet
Ear Piercing
The majority of ear piercing is performed using sterilised surgical stainless steel.
Studex uses only surgical steel that is manufactured to a specification that does not allow nickel release, thus stopping nickel allergies like nickel dermatitis.
Titanium is a very pure metal not containing nickel.
Studex jewellery uses polished surgical stainless steel, 24k gold plated surgical stainless steel, 14k yellow gold and 14k white gold.
Some manufacturers make their ear piecing studs from plastic (Blondahl) and brass (Caflon).

Nose Piercing
Nose piercing that is performed with a nose piercing instrument is usually done with titanium because it is pure and is a very strong metal.
Nose piercing is also performed with a needle using 316L surgical stainless steel, 14k and 18k solid gold twist, “L” shape or straight post studs.
Navel Piercing
Navel piercing is usually performed with 316L surgical stainless steel jewellery.
Titanium, usually grade G23 is also used but this material has a much higher cost. 14k and 18k gold are also used but are very expensive.
9k gold should not be used for initial piercings as it is too impure.
There are two belly piercing systems available, Medisept and Blomdahl. Both systems use sterilised jewellery and equipment.
Tongue Piercing
Tongue piercing is done with 316L surgical stainless steel or titanium.
Acrylics should not be used for initial tongue piercing as the acrylic cannot withstand the heat of the autoclave so cannot be sterilised correctly.
Tongue piercing must always be performed with a sterilised needle.
Eyebrow Piercing
Eyebrow piercing is usually performed with 316L surgical stainless steel or titanium.
Eyebrow piercing must always be performed with a sterilised needle.
Labret / Tragus / Lip / Conch Piercing
These piercings are usually performed with 316L surgical stainless steel and must always be performed with a sterilised needle.
Surface Piercing
These piercings are usually performed with titanium due to the high rejection rate.
Surface piercing is always performed with a sterilised needle or small dermal punch.
Body Jewellery Styles
Jewellery Styles
Ear
Most ear piercing studs have a 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm or 8mm head and have a 10mm post.
The most popular style of jewellery is the bezel stud. Claw or tiffany styles can also be used. Usually 16g to 20g
Nose
Nose studs can be straight with a wedge shaped end, have a bent tail, “L” shape or straight.
Usually 16g, 18g or 20g in 6mm or 8mm length.
Navel
Navel piercing bars are bent. Usually with a 10mm bar & have a 6mm top ball & an 8mm bottom ball.
Navel bars are always 14g!
Tongue
Tongue piercing is done with a 18mm to 22mm straight barbell with either 5mm or 6mm balls.
Tongue bars are always 14g! When the piercing is healed the tongue bar should always be downsized to a shorter bar (14mm to 16mm).
Eyebrow
Eyebrow piercing is done with a 10mm or 12mm 16g barbell with 3mm balls or cones.
Barbells can be straight but are usually bent.
Labret / Tragus / Lip
These piercings are usually done with a labret style stud and ball or cone.
Labrets have a flat back for comfort. The labret studs are usually 16g 10mm or 12mm but can be up to 14g.
Retainers
Retainers are usually made from surgical grade polycarbonate or bioflex as they are flexible and translucent so they are less obvious when being worn.
Mainly used to keep the piercing hole open when jewellery is not appropriate.
These are a good alternative for a pregnant navel although it is not recommended to pierce women whilst they are pregnant.
Dermal Anchors
A relatively new style of piercing is using a dermal anchor.
Dermal piercing is essentially a surface piercing procedure where an incision is made in the skin with a needle or small dermal punch and a dermal anchor is inserted. T
his style allows the look / style of a piercing without an entry & exit point as a traditional piercing.
Stretching
Stretching is generally performed in the ear lobe.
This is done using tapers where the ear is pierced and once healed a taper is inserted to stretch the hole.
Generally one gauge at a time until the desired size is achieved.
Stretching is generally achieved one gauge at a time.
The taper is inserted into the piercing breaking the tissue but not making the piercing bleed.
When the tissue is healed the taper is inserted another gauge size, again breaking the tissue.
When the issue is healed the process is repeated until the desired hole size is achieved.
Healing Times
General Healing Times
Ear Lobe: 4 weeks
Nose/Ear Cartilage: 10 weeks + due to less blood flow in this region.
Navel: 6 to 12 months.
Tongue: 4 weeks. After this period the jewellery should be downsized to a 16mm barbell. Lip: 6 to 8 weeks.
Can take longer as it gets moved and bumped more frequently.
Eyebrow: 6 to 8 weeks. Can take longer as it gets moved and bumped more frequently.
Surface: 10 to 12 weeks +. This piercing often migrates out of the piercing site.
All body piercing will swell marginally when initially pierced so it is critical to use the correct jewellery gauge, size and length.
The downsizing process is also a critical process to maintain a healthy piercing site.
At the time of piercing most customers will be receive antiseptic gel or spray to help speed up the healing process. Body Piercers sometimes use a saline solution instead of an antiseptic.
Sterilisation
Studex ear piercing studs and Medisept nose piercing studs are sterilised with ethylene oxide gas.
This is performed in a vacuum chamber where the gas is forced through the Tyvek paper to kill all of the bacteria.
This is a large scale sterilisation process that will last approximately 7 years when the jewellery is stored in optimal conditions.
The body piercing stores sterilise their jewellery using an autoclave and pouches.
A dry heat steriliser can also be used where the tools don’t have a pouch and need to be used directly after the sterilisation process.
Piercing Instruments
The majority of ear piercing is performed with a disposable cartridge ear piercing instrument
. Only the outer perimeter of the ear and lobe can be pierced with an ear piercing instrument.
Other sites on the ear must be pierced with a sterilised needle.
Nose piercing is performed with a nose piercing gun or an 18g to 20g needle and needle receiving tube.
The nostril is the only piercing site that can be pierced with a nose piercing instrument.
The septum must not be pierced with a piercing instrument.
It is legislated that a piercer must use a separate and specific piercing instrument for ear piercing and nose piercing.
