Our Skin

The skin consists of two layers – the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is the uppermost layer which contains pigment-producing cells that give skin its colour. The epidermis renews itself constantly, with new cells born in the lover (basal cell) layer of the epidermis. These mature as they gradually rise to the surface, where they ultimately die and fall off.

The dermis contains blood and lymph vessels, nerves, sweat glands and oil glands, and is found below the epidermis. Hair follicles are extensions of the epidermis into the dermis. The dermis is made up of networks of elastic fibres (elastin) for suppleness, as well as dense fibres (collagen) for strength. A layer of fatty tissue lies below the skin and gives it structure.
