About Me
I am a Registered Nurse, Infant Massage Instructor & Wellness Coach. I draw on my expertise and wisdom I have gained throughout my nursing career along with practical skills that have helped me overcome pelvic pain, depression and PTSD.
Here’s my story so far….
The NICU was my home away from home
It was a dream come true to become a Registered Nurse. And when I landed my job at the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) it was like coming home. I found my true calling. The main reason I went for the job at the Grantley Stable Neonatal Unit was because they were doing a study on the impact of infant massage on premature babies. Their holistic approach to health is innovative and a positive move in the right direction.
I thought Neonatal Nursing was something I was going to be doing for the rest of my life. I lived and breathed it, I soaked up all the experiences and the knowledge that was being passed on to me like precious heirlooms. This was more than a job to me, I spent months getting to know these families and helped guide them through the roller coaster ride of the NICU.
The nurses, doctors and allied health professionals were my family, we were there for each other, and banded together to help these families get through some of the hardest times of their lives. This is a type of nursing unlike any other and it was my privilege to be a part of something so special.
After two amazing years at the Grantley Stable Neonatal Unit (RBWH, NICU) I felt it was time for me to grow my wings and move on. It was the hardest decision to make but aren’t all the important ones hard? I moved back to Sydney for a brief amount of time to have a break then I met my amazing partner and I ended up moving across the country and welcomed the challenge of being a rural nurse.
A city nurse in the country
I moved to WA and worked at the Hedland Health Campus. It wasn’t long until I became the go to nurse for adult and children who were critically ill and therefore required close monitoring. I was fortunate enough to gain lifelong a lot of skills from the incredible rural nurses.
One of the most memorable times of my time as a rural nurse was contending with the elements. I stayed on duty when a cyclone hit. The floor of the education department became my bed for the night! I would was always give that little bit extra without question.
Melbourne Daydreaming
I always wanted to live in Melbourne. Yes, I’m from Sydney but Melbourne has always felt more like home to me. So after a year in Hedland we decided to move their. And at the same time, a life changing opportunity cropped up to work in the NICU of Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne. After a phone interview and lots of sleepless nights I was told I got the job!
So, we packed up our things and moved into a hotel room in Melbourne with 14 days to find somewhere to live. Thankfully, we found somewhere on day 8. I started at the Royal Children’s and it was amazing, I was working with some of Australia’s leading Neonatologists and Neonatal Nurses, we looked after beautiful babies and their families with some of the rarest conditions like APERTS. It was an amazing opportunity. Sadly though, I had a health crisis, which meant I reluctantly had to leave my position at the RCH.
When things fall apart it all comes together
During my recovery, I remembered the study on infant massage that influenced me to become a neonatal nurse. I researched infant massage and all the amazing benefits and of course I re-read the PREMM (pre-term early massage by the mother) study and I just knew this was my next step. So, I enrolled in the infant massage course and now I am a fully qualified Infant Massage Instructor.
