My Massaging Background

Like many other natural therapists my introduction to massage came from the search to address and solve my own pain.

Massage was one of the very few modalities to offer me any worthwhile relief. I discovered a wide range in the abilities and skills of the various massage therapists from whom I received treatments. I believed I could do better and embarked upon a goal to address this.

The style of massage I have developed is an integration of techniques and skills I have studied and received and that I consider to be most effective and beneficial.

A skilled therapist should be able to provide a treatment ranging from gentle to very firm and everything in between. However, qualifying that, I prefer a deep, slow and flowing style and find this most effective. I combine Kahuna flow with Western remedial skills. It works!

I believe having been a professional sportsman and overcoming serious musculoskeletal injuries undoubtedly gives me greater insight and knowledge regarding appropriate treatment plans.

I am motivated by a desire to assist in the healing of others and a passion to excel in my vocation. I am continuing to expand my skills through further education in order to become an even more effective practitioner. There is so much to learn about the bodies healing process.

REMEDIAL MASSAGE

Remedial Massage can be defined as a paramedical treatment to assist in healing parts of the body that have been injured or immobilized due to trauma, injury, stress, illness, age, poor posture or lack of exercise. This form of massage is suitable for ailments arising from exercise, the work environment or from everyday life activities.

Remedial massage techniques are similar to the manipulations used in Swedish Massage but generally are applied more slowly with more intent, focus and pressure. Having first warmed the soft tissues deeper muscle groups are targeted. Remedial massage provides a healing treatment that may be strong, firm or gentle and/or deep or superficial. Remedial massage seeks to treat the whole body and trace the source of discomfort to its origins. The goal of remedial massage is to restore structural balance in the muscle groups throughout the body and decompress the pressure around the bones they work in unison with.

SPORTS MASSAGE

Sports Massage is a specialized form of soft tissue and myofascial release massage. It aims to treat specific muscular tension and adhesions within muscles that may arise from demanding physical activity on the sporting field or in the work place. Techniques are used to create optimal muscle flexibility, increased muscle and joint range of movement and improve muscle metabolism in order to:

Promote recovery from muscular strain and injury
Prevent recurrence of injury & or pain
Improve performance by improving the bodies biomechanics
I have developed specific assessment and palpation skills that identify specific muscles, scar tissue, trigger points and abnormally contracted muscles. These techniques need to be applied in a specific manner to be effective.

REFLEXOLOGY

Stress, toxins, disease and illness create blockages in the body inhibiting the natural flow of energy. Reflexology stimulates the congested reflexes assisting in clearing blockages and allowing the flow of energy. Based on the principle that all parts of the body are mirrored in the feet and hands the goal of Reflexology is to trigger the return of balance to the entire mind, body and spirit by the application of pressure to the reflex part of the feet and hands. This activates an electro-chemical nerve impulse which is conducted to the central nervous system to restore equilibrium to the body.

WHAT IS TRIGGER POINT THERAPY?

A Trigger Point (TP) is considered to be an area of impaired circulation within the muscle. This is essentially an involuntary contraction of only a small portion of the muscle, creating pain and dysfunction within the muscle.

Digital precise pressure applied to the TP causes blanching (ischemia) on the skin. The blanching confirms that while pressure is applied fluid flow is decreased to both the skin and the underlying TP. Once the pressure is released hyperaemia occurs with the return of blood flow. This change in circulation flushes away inflammatory chemicals (Travell & Simmons).

Essentially the idea is that deep tissue massage and its various techniques improve the flow of fluid within the tissues.
Trigger Point Therapy can assist these common and specific conditions:

General muscle and joint stiffness
Upper back pain
Burning between the shoulders
Neck tension
Thoracic outlet syndrome
Frozen shoulder
Tennis elbow
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Arm and hand pain, tingling
Sinus pain and congestion
Headaches & migraines

Trigger Point therapy can reduce pain, increase movement and allow muscles to lengthen and strengthen. TPs have been studied and shown to be the most common cause of musculoskeletal pain. Pain clinic doctors have found that TPS are the main source of pain over 70% of the time. TPS cause the muscle to remain tight, which weakens the muscle and places strain on the points where the muscle attaches to the bone. This often creates compensatory pain in other joints and muscles.

A unique characteristic that distinguishes TPS from other muscle pain is that the TP almost always refers pain to other areas of the body. This is why many other treatments are ineffective. Many modes of treatment assume the are of pain is the source of pain.

HOW DOES TRIGGER POINT THERAPY WORK?

To treat the TP strong pressure must be applied. Pressure should be applied slowly and released slowly for the best results. The pressure should be maintained until there is a change in pain levels. When pressure is applied to the TP the chemical/pressure cycle is interrupted, which helps to stop the constant pain and contraction in the muscle. Additionally, the muscle is heated and kneaded during the treatment that helps to increase the circulation and remove the metabolic waste products. Finally, adding stimulus (pressure) to the TP overrides the pain signals being transmitted.
