Shiatsu
Shiatsu is a holistic healing art created in Japan and based on traditional 3500-year-old oriental medical theory while combining the principles of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology.
The theory of traditional Chinese medicine proposes that energy, known as chi, qi (or ki in Japanese), moves through the body in channels known as meridians.
Each meridian is connected to an internal organ and carries the energy of that organ’s functioning. Good health is reliant upon the harmonious flow of chi through the meridians and internal organs.
With the use of pulse, tongue and hara diagonosis it can be determined what area is unbalanced and affected. Shiatsu uses different techniques to assit with treatment, moxa, cupping, Gua Sha, fingers, thumbs, elbows, knees, feet and other massage tools and also gentle stretches.
Reiki
Dr Mikao Usui in the 1900s re-discovered this healing technique and invented the word ‘Reiki’ to describe the nature of the energy that this technique produces.
He combined two Japanese words: Rei, meaning “universal”, and Ki, meaning “life-force energy”.
Reiki’s life-force energy is said to be “universal” because it is the essential underlying energy common to all living things, creating everything from the densest levels of matter to the highest levels of consciousness.
And because it is the energy required for all the various functions and activities of the body and being, Reiki can assists with all forms of illness, disease and disorder, whether physical, emotional, mental or spiritual.
Cupping
Like acupuncture, cupping follows the lines of the meridians.
There are five meridian lines on the back, and these are where the cups are usually placed.
Using these points, cupping can help to align and relax qi, as well as target more specific conditions.
By using the meridian channels, cupping strives to ‘open’ these channels – the paths through which life energy flows freely throughout the body, through all tissues and organs, thus providing a smoother and more free-flowing qi (life force).
Cupping is one of the best deep-tissue therapies accessible. It is thought to affect tissues up to four inches deep from the external skin.
Toxins can be released, blockages can be cleared, and veins and arteries can be refreshed within these four inches of affected tissue.
Cupping can also be applied to hands, wrists, legs, and ankles and apply the same healing to specific organs that relate with these points.
Gua Sha/Moxa
Gua sha is a healing technique of traditional East Asian medicine. Sometimes called ‘coining, spooning or scraping’, Gua sha is defined as instrument-assisted unidirectional press-stroking of a lubricated area of the body surface to intentionally create transitory therapeutic petechiae called ‘sha’ representing extravasation of blood in the subcutis.
Raising sha removes blood stagnation considered pathogenic in traditional East Asian medicine.
Modern research shows the transitory therapeutic petechiae produce an anti inflammatory and immune protective effect that persists for days following a single Gua sha treatment.
It accounts for the immediate relief that patients feel from pain, stiffness, fever, chill, cough, wheeze, nausea and vomiting etc. Gua sha is effective in acute and chronic internal organ disorders including liver inflammation in hepatitis.
Moxa (Mugwart herb)
Moxa is used to strengthen the immune system, to warm the body and to bring more qi and blood flow to an area. Moxa is especially useful for the treatment of pain.
Moxa is used both directly and indirectly, depending upon the intended effects. It is used to great effect in tandem with acupuncture points.
Moxa comes in many different forms from moxa sticks, smokeless moxa sticks, short moxa stick ons, moxa punk.
Acupressure, Massage, Bodywork
Acupressure is a therapy developed over 5,000 years ago as an important aspect of Asian, especially Chinese medicine.
It uses precise finger placement and pressure over specific points along the body. These points follow specific channels, known as meridians, the same channels used in acupuncture.
