What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a holistic form of complementary medical treatment which uses gentle manual techniques to diagnose and treat a wide range of health problems.
Here at Ballam Park Osteopathy we gently work with your body’s structure to enhance and accelerate the healing process. Osteopathy aims to relieve your pain and discomfort, and to improve your mobility.
Although we do use manipulation selectively, we have found that often “cracking the joints” is not required in treatment.
Osteopaths work with the philosophy that the structure of your body is directly connected to how it will function. Correcting your body’s structure allows normal function. Fluid movement through the body tissues will improve after correcting the structure and a more effective exchange of nutrients and wastes begins. Your body can then heal as fast as is possible depending on the degree of injury.
Although Osteopaths do have manipulation in their repertoire of techniques, being highly skilled in gentle non-manipulative techniques is clearly an advantage in treating the young and elderly… and for anyone who just isn’t fond of “cracking” the joints. Experience has shown gentler techniques can make more of a difference in achieving longer lasting pain relief.
Osteopathy is great for all ages and stages of your life boasting great results in achieving pain relief quickly.
This centre offers craniosacral therapy which may be the most effective gentle form of hands on therapy available today. Other styles of treatment modalities include massage, mobilisation, muscle stretch techniques, fascial and functional release techniques.

Services
Back & Neck Pain
Nearly all back pain is either caused by, or directly linked to, a compression of the spine. The spine is shortened from its natural length, which causes pain due to pressure on the spinal cord and surrounding skeletal system.
Migranes & Headaches
Osteopaths are well placed to help the patient suffering from headaches. Using cranial osteopathy techniques we are able to help reduce the severity and frequency of tension and migraine headaches.
Joint Pain
Osteopathic treatment can do a great deal to reduce pain, ease swelling and improve mobility and range of joint movement for sufferers of Osteoarthritis, Arthritis & Rheumatoid Arthritis. Treatment involves gentle manual osteopathic techniques on joints, muscles and ligaments.
Facet Joint Pain
This often occurs when bending to lift something and the back ‘locks up’. This causes severe, acute pain. Osteopathy is able to relieve pain and stiffness caused by facet joints unable to move freely between vertebrae using rhythmic and direct therapy practices.
Sports Injuries
Whether you are an elite athlete or enjoy playing your sport socially just for fun and fitness, an osteopath can help treat the recurring pains or injuries that may occur due to sport.
Sciatica
Sciatica is usually caused by a pinched nerve or ‘slipped disk’. This can start with lower back pain and then progress to pain radiating down the leg. Our gentle techniques help with the relief of symptoms and speeding up the healing process for this injury.
Muscle Strains
Treatment focuses on reducing muscle tension and therefore easing pain and inflammation by stimulating blood supply to the tissues. Passive resisted stretches and trigger point release are also used as appropriate, together with advice on rehabilitative exercises.
Pre & Post Natal
During pregnancy enormous changes take. The body has to get used to carrying up to 10kg of baby, waters and placenta, which can impose great physical strain on the organs, tissues, joints and ligaments of the body. Your pregnant body has to adapt to all these changes, and often results with new aches and pains arising.
Work Injuries
Whether you work in an office or outside you need to be able to cope with the demands made on your body by the work you do. Issues may start off as an occasional niggling pain but may increase until pain is more frequent or constant. We can help to ease pain, and give advice on how best to prevent further injury/strain.
Headaches
Most people suffer headaches at some stage in their life. Thankfully, for most people they are few and far between, but others suffer on a more frequent basis with pain that lasts from minutes to days. Such pain ranges in intensity from being a slight inconvenience, causing little or no interruption to the daily routine, to being a dreadfully debilitating condition, ruining the life of the sufferer.
Many people who suffer quite severe headaches often accept their lot with little complaint and sometimes do not consider the possibility of treatment. Their suffering may not be inevitable as there are a variety of treatments that can reduce or eliminate headaches.
What causes headaches?
The causes of headaches are many and varied including muscle tension, migraine, sinus congestion, trauma, hypertension, pre-menstrual syndrome, and, very rarely, tumours or meningitis. The vast majority are due to muscle tension or migraine. A 28-year study found that 90% of patients complaining of head pain had either migraine or tension headaches or a combination of the two.
The pain sensitive structures of the head are the scalp, arteries, muscles, and mucous membranes of the sinuses, external and middle ear and the teeth. Interestingly the brain itself has little or no sensitivity to pain.
How can Ballam Park Osteopathy help?
Osteopaths are well placed to help the patient suffering from head pain. Increased tensions in the musculo-skeletal system can be both a symptom and a cause of headaches.
Peter is able to treat using cranial osteopathy which is particularly effective in relieving headaches and migraines.
Tense muscles are known to release chemicals that can be triggers for headaches and those of the head and neck are particularly implicated. The main nerves of the head responsible for pain are themselves closely related to the nerves that originate between the vertebrae of the neck.
Persistent tightness of the muscles of the neck will ultimately lead to compression of the joints of the neck, and so to dysfunction or increased degeneration and so pressure on these nerves.
Osteopaths are able to identify the areas of dysfunction and treat that area. Such treatment may consist of massage to the muscles of the neck and upper spine or of gentle manipulation of the joints. The aim is to stretch the muscles and supporting ligaments of the neck, to relax muscle spasm and ensure free movement that will allow better drainage through the blood vessels. In this way many headache sufferers find their pain is helped and often completely relieved.

Reviews
“After Bulging a disc in 2013 I was pushed and prodded through 8 different Physio’s. After over a year of pain and not being able to work, I decided to look for treatment from other means. And whilst trying to avoid a possible Discectomy operation I found Peter. After the first treatment he had me walking upright and pain was a minimum. I was taken back at that after seeing 8 physiotherapists and with no prevail, that this one person could take so much pain and tension off my spine with just light massage. Sadly, I had to get the operation as the damage was too severe for treatment alone. And Peter is currently assisting me in getting back to full time work and a life. Thank you Peter”
“Prompt booking which is rare, great communication and treatment, particularly liked the cranial work. I’ll be back.”
“Fantastic, friendly service with a pleasant, clean setup. Came out with instant relief from the issues I was suffering, I predict frequent visits would be even better. ”
