Our Values
We are very proud of what we do as retailers!
We seek to master the art of doing many small things well. We have only one job as retailers:
“Continually seek to better understand the needs of our customers and to improve the service of those needs”
We are passionate about INTEGRITY in business.
“For us, people really do come before profits”
Of course we are in business to make a profit; we need to make a profit so we can invest continually in doing things better. However, to achieve our goals we need to put people first, both our customers and our staff.
We see ourselves as part of the community both as responsible employers and through the many community projects we support.
We have a long tradition of supporting community projects and organizations. Please see our charities page for more information. Charities Page
We are very proud to be “part of the family.” Many families have been with us for many years. Some families have been doing business with us across several generations.
For many of these families, “Bobby’s” is part of the furniture, a trusted “institution” where children can be sent to buy what they need without their parents, confident in the knowledge that they will be looked after just as well as if mum or dad was with them. We are very honored by that trust.
History
Bob Stewart is a Third generation family business, founded in 1925, by my grandfather, Bob Stewart. Originally it was a small local menswear store. My Grandfather died suddenly in 1931 from blood poisoning.
He left the business to his wife Anne and baby son Robert. Against the advice of family and friends, and in defiance of the social expectations of the time, Anne decided to take over the running of the business.
Her determination, courage, and hard work enabled her to pay off debt and successfully steer the business through both the Great Depression, and the rationing and shortages during the Second World War.
Dad joined the business in 1948 and over time took the business in new directions; first by deciding to stock school uniform and later by moving to a much larger store in 1969.
Dad’s passion for customer service helped grow the business and is a source of inspiration to Francis and I every day! Francis and I joined the business in the early 1990’s.
Francis and I have expanded our main store in Kew, implemented powerful information technology solutions, expanded our warehousing capabilities and developed multi-site systems to enable us to serve many more families effectively.
We all look forward enthusiastically to the challenges the future will bring!

Embroidery for Blazers
My school has given my son / daughter an award to be put on his/her blazer. What do I need to do?
Simply bring your son or daughter’s Blazer into your usual Bob Stewart store or outlet. Please make sure:
- That all the pockets have been emptied
- That the blazer has been dry cleaned (for occupational health and safety reasons)
- That the blazer is clearly named
If your school has sent you a letter about the award you must bring it with you. Some schools do notify us by email of the awards given out. If you are unsure please bring your letter!
What is involved in having the embroidery done?
When you bring your Blazer in we create an order for you so we can trace your job through each stage in the process:
- We remove the pocket from your blazer and send it with its paperwork to the embroiderer
- The embroiderer puts the award(s) on the pocket. This involves setting up each separate award on the computerized embroidery machine and clamping the pocket in place for accurate placement. It is a time consuming, fiddly process.
- The embroiderer sends your pocket back to us.
- We match your pocket up with its blazer and send them out to our tailor to have the pocket sewn back in the blazer
- We collect the blazer from the tailor and notify you by text message it is ready
How long does all that take?
We usually quote two weeks to complete the process. During quiet times it may take less, however we are unable to guarantee shorter completion times.
What does it cost?
We charge $13.50 per insignia or $16 for titles above eight letters. The cost of sewing the pocket back on the blazer is $30.
Some school awards require a new pocket be used. These special award pockets cost from $20 to $50 each (excluding the cost of sewing on the pocket) depending on the design and work involved.
The policy of some schools is that a higher level award for the same activity replaces a lower level award on the pocket.
In this instance the lower level award must be removed before the higher level award can be embroidered.
The cost of removing embroidery is $15 per insignia. Unfortunately this is a time consuming process that has to be done by hand to avoid damaging the pocket.
For example: John is a good footballer. He has been previously awarded a silver insignia “XVIII” for Football.
John has now received a gold award for football. In this case we have to remove the silver “XVIII” before we can embroider “XVIII” in gold.
I am a good sewer. Can I sew the pocket on myself? (Some friends or relatives are great sewers too!)
We are happy for you to sew the pocket on yourself. You then save $30.
Is the pocket sewn back onto the blazer exactly as it was?
For the pocket to be sewn back onto the blazer exactly as it was it has to be hand sewn.
Due to cost and time constraints we are unable to offer hand sewing of pockets.
If you would prefer to have your pocket hand sewn please let us know when you bring your blazer in.
We will organize the embroidery. You can then take the blazer to the tailor of your choice for hand sewing.

Reviews
“A kew institution. Great service.”
“Fantastic service, uniforms are easy to purchase, nice casual clothing too on lower floor. ”
“Bob Stewart has helped me with my son’s school needs for years. Being a single parent of 2 boys, their ‘pick-up and charge’ facility helped heaps. My sons just walked in the store to get what they needed and charged to our account. Bob Stewart has been very forgiving on payments and has been supportive esp on peak season where we needed lots of school items. My eldest son is now 33 years old (ex-Trinity Grammar) and my other boy is graduating (year 12) from Melbourne High (with Carey since prep). Bob Stewart made it easy for me to manage the cost of their uniforms! We even got Christmas cards from Bob!”
“Easily the most comprehensive uniform store in Melbourne. My children have been to several schools over the years, but Bob Stewart has been always the logical choice for uniforms. ”
“I keep thinking Bob Stewart could easily be more expensive than it is. It has nearly a monopoly on school uniforms, but the prices are reasonable, the quality of the clothes is good (as evidenced by the strong second hand trade at Deepdene Primary) and the staff are great considering they deal with kids all day. Downstairs there is a range of general clothing. The whole things reminds me a lot of a the type of shop you’d expect in the main street of Albury, ten years ago, but when you need a black tie and a cumerbund without paying the earth, this is the place. Five stars for value and values.”
