Swedish massage

A smooth flowing style designed to reduce stress and promote deep relaxation

 Remedial massage

A firm technique designed to locate and repair damage to muscles, tendons and joints.  May be firm or hard depending on your needs, generally performed at a medium or slow pace.

Deep tissue massage

Designed to realign deep layers of muscle, tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissue. Generally performed at a slow pace and with greater pressure applied to more concentrated areas. Due to its nature some soreness may occur after this treatment.

Trigger Point Therapy

Designed to release points of hyperirritability in the soft tissue structure (myofascial trigger points), which are generally formed over a prolonged period of time and can cause great localised and referred pain, stiffness and/or restrictions in the body.

Western Cupping Therapy

Designed to activate the lymphatic system, promote blood circulation and assist with deep tissue repair. Small ‘cups’ are combined with warmth or suction to create partial vacuums around acupuncture points and/or parts of the body affected by pain. Very pleasant to receive, however light bruises can sometimes appear in the area of cupping.

Why Should Everyone Get Regular Massage

Stressed out, Tired and sore?

Most people would agree a massage makes them feel good. But many probably don’t realise exactly how good a regular massage is for their overall health. What would you say if I told you that massage can improve performance, aid recovery, prevent and eliminate injuries, reduce stress and even enhance metabolism and circulation!

There are so many alternative health treatments available in this day and age its a wonder people get confused about where to go  and what to do when they’re not feeling the best. There are so many natural health therapies emerging in today’s marketplace and we can be a little overwhelmed.

What I want you to do is think about this. The Chinese began using massage to heal the human body as long ago as 5,000BC and it’s still being used today. Now there has to be something to be said for that.

Health, Fitness and Massage Therapy

There is quite a lot of science behind massage. The process is not just simply pressing, kneading and pummeling muscles and skin, there is a great deal more to it than that. The reason you feel different after a massage is because it is healing and invigorating tired, aching or injured muscles.

The process of Massage: Lymph Flow

  • Increases blood and lymph circulation. Lymph is a fluid that transports the waste from body tissues and is dependent on the squeezing effect of muscles.
  • An active person has better lymph flow than an inactive person. However, stimulation from vigorous activity can lead to increased waste, which can negate the benefit. This is where massage has a huge advantage.
  •  Massage can dramatically aid lymph movement, which together with blood, supplies nutrients and oxygen and rids wastes and toxins.

It is easy to understand why good circulation is so important to our health and why massage can be so beneficial just for this purpose.

Massage has so many other benefits that are not realized!!!

  • Increase the blood’s oxygen capacity by 10-15%
  • Helps loosen contracted, shortened muscles and stimulate weak, flaccid muscles. This muscle/postural “balancing” can even help posture and promote more efficient movement;
  • Speed recovery from exercise-induced fatigue;
  • Increase metabolic rate and processes – Increase excretion of nitrogen, inorganic phosphorus, and sodium chloride (salt). This suggests that the metabolic rate increases;
  • Balance the nervous system by calming or stimulating it, depending on which effect is needed;
  • Improves function of the oil and sweat glands that lubricate, clean and cool the skin;
  • Inflexible skin can become softer and more supple;
  • Indirectly or directly stimulating nerves the supply internal organs can dilate the organs’ blood vessels, improving blood supply.

Massage and Sport

  • Massage can actually reduce or eliminate what may appear to be exercise-induced pain. You don’t have to live with the aches and pains which are an inevitable part of sporting activity.
  • Massage can increase endurance, control fatigue and help people feel better when used as part of a regular health program.
  • Massage helps reduce fatigue, speed up and aid recovery. This will in turn enable more productive training and effective workouts.

The results are that you will have a better performance and fewer injuries.

  • Massage alters the performance of muscles and exercise changes the way our muscles work.
  • Blood vessels become more intricate as the body demands more oxygen and nutrients and increases waste elimination. Elimination of waste takes time. While the muscles are getting into shape, they can struggle to get enough oxygen and nutrients, so the inevitable outcome is a buildup of waste collects in the muscles and in turn an increase in pain and decrease in performance.

Nobody wants that!!!! We want our performance to be at the peak at all times…..

Massage for Injury Repair/Maintenance

  • Massage also helps recovery from soft tissue injuries such as sprains and strains. Tissue growth and repair is accelerated by efficient circulation and appropriate stimulation.

Stress Management and Massage

  • Stress is a very real part of our lives. We all experience some form of stress through work, family, the environment and society. Mental tensions, frustrations, and insecurity cause the most damage. Hormones released by stress actually shrink the vessels, inhibiting circulation.
  •  When we are stressed and our mental state is fatigued the constriction of vessels means the heart has to work a harder. Breathing becomes rapid and shallow and digestion slows. Nearly every bodily process is degraded. Studies show stress can cause migraines, hypertension (high blood pressure), depression, some peptic ulcers and many other peripheral issuses.
  • Researchers have estimated 80% of disease is stress related. Soothing and relaxing massage therapy can counteract the effects of stress.

What Injuries can Massage Treat?

  • Frozen shoulder
  • Tight and sore shoulders and neck
  • Back pain & sciatica
  • Tennis and golfers elbow
  • Sprains, strains and tears
  • Over-use injuries (repetitive strains)
  • Shin splints and plantar fascia issues
  • Headaches & migraines

Summary

Modern studies show that massage can successfully treat a range of disorders, including back pain, anxiety, high blood pressure and postural issues. Massage works by soothing soft tissue and encouraging relaxation. Different types of massage include myofascial release, trigger point therapy, reflexology, remedial massage and relaxation massage.
