Laura Peregrine

Bachelor of Physiotherapy

I qualified as a Physiotherapist from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa and after working in both South Africa and the United Kingdom I set my sights on the beautiful northern beaches of Sydney, Australia.

In the 10 years I have been practicing I have developed my skills across a broad spectrum of physiotherapy. I spent my initial years working in the public hospital system then I followed a passion to work with children as a paediatric physiotherapist at The Cerebral Palsy Alliance.  In 2005 I began to delve into the world of private practice and sports injuries and in 2007 decided to focus my energies in this area that I found so challenging and so fulfilling.

I  believe in continually improving my skill and service to clients and have done varied post-graduate training courses, including the McKenzie Technique, Muscle Energy Techniques, Cervicogenic Headaches, Pilates, Dry Needling and Vestibular Rehabilitation for Vertigo. I have incorporated the skills I learned in my previous roles and continue to work with children and teenagers in this new setting.

On a personal note, I am a very active individual myself, enjoying a variety of sports and activities, including bikram yoga, wake boarding, snowboarding and dancing.

I believe movement and exercise is paramount to health and happiness and encourage this in my practice.

My ultimate goal with any treatment is  to empower my clients through education, facilitation and strengthening, so that they may take control of their symptoms and self manage to prevent injury reoccurrence and to maintain optimal physical health.

Treatments

Musculoskeletal pain, strain or imbalance

Pain can arise from numerous causes and can be acute or longstanding. Treatment focus on assessment to determine it’s cause and limitations and then therapy to relieve the pain and return the client to optimal health. Therapy may include soft tissue and joint mobilisation, electrotherapy techniques, dry needling and exercise programs to strengthen and stabilise the affected areas.

Exercise Prescription and Rehabilitation

Due to chronic injury or illness, surgery, fractures, or pregnancy, the changes that the body undergoes can cause pain, stiffness and weakness. Rehabilitation through mobilisation and specific exercise prescription is important in returning the body to optimal function and preventing further or repeat issues.

Headaches and Migraines

Headaches and migraines can severely affect daily functioning, can occur frequently and can last for days or weeks. Treatment of the cervical spine has been shown to assist in relieving the symptoms as well as reducing the frequency and severity of future attacks.

Vertigo

Vertigo may be due to illness, infection or trauma to the head or neck. Most commonly it is related to the inner ear and can be corrected through mobilisation and repositioning techniques.

Rehabilitation of movement and balance is required depending on the severity of the vertigo or if the vestibular nerves have been affected.

Chest therapy

Treatment of chronic or persistent chest infections or conditions involves the use of percussions and facilitated breathing exercises to assist in loosening and expectorating mucous and improving air entry into the lungs.

Services

Dry Needling

Dry needling is the use of Acupuncture needles placed into trigger points in soft tissues to assist in myofascial release. Dry needling is not used in all treatments and the client’s consent is always gained prior to use.

Home visits

Many elderly people are unable to attend therapy rooms due to illness, decreased mobility or lack of transport. Therapy is often needed for pain relief, joint mobilisation, exercise programs, and balance and gait re-education, and is important in maintaining independent function or preventing further falls, injury or illness. Home visits within the area to both private residences and Aged Care facilities can be arranged.

Pilates

Pilates is an exercise-based therapy aimed at activating the body’s core muscles, correcting muscle imbalances and enhancing control during movement. This prevents overcompensation from incorrect muscle groups and enables strengthening at optimal functional levels, as well as improving posture!

Although Pilates exercises are most often used to rehabilitate and maintain a healthy spine, they play just as an important role in the rehabilitation of many other joint or muscle injuries.

Pilates is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, and treatments can be individual or group sessions. No previous experience is needed, although an initial individual session is necessary for assessment to facilitate correct core activation.

Group sessions are held on Monday and Thursday nights. They have a maximum of 8 participants and run for a term of 8 weeks.
