ABOUT US

I started Chi Flow Massage Melbourne after a ten year exploration of hands-on therapies, leading to a Diploma of Remedial Massage Therapies from the Southern School of Natural Therapies.

The word Chi refers to Traditional Chinese Medicine’s concept of chi (qi) – a vital force or energy that flows through the body via channels or meridians, which enables the body’s functions.

Blockages in the energy flow are said to cause illness, and the role of massage is to support free energy flow.

This clinic’s work is not based in the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), but draws on the many parallels between the body’s inter-connection and communication patterns, as seen by the oriental and Western disciplines alike.

Western science identified patterns of continuity in the soft tissues (called myofascial chains, planes or meridians) whose location is remarkably similar to the Traditional Chinese acupuncture meridian maps. Characteristic tension patterns tend to form, involving one or more myofascial chains. Persistent tension restricts circulation and neural activity, and has been linked to reduced muscle functioning, and to adverse effects on other body’s systems. Massage stimulates circulation and neural activity, helps the body’s natural healing and maintenance processes, and supports and nourishes other systems and internal organs.

Although mainstream medical language does not refer to “energy”, the concept of ‘bio-energy’ has scientific support. The body’s natural connection and communication systems generate measurable bio-electric and bio-magnetic fields, similar to electricity generated in non-living nature. Soft tissues that respond to pressure, the circulation of blood through the cardio-vascular system, and the nervous systems (central and peripheral) are all examples of these natural communication systems.

To introduce bio-energy and energy medicine, I’d like to refer to James L. Oschman Ph.D (video above right). I admire James’ ability to explain to what many therapists know through practice (even though James’ books brought back my memories of high-school physics!)

Dr Oschman combines academic research in biophysics and biology with extensive investigations of holistic hands-on therapies. He is the author of two books, Energy Medicine: The Scientific Basis and Energy Medicine in Therapeutics and Human Performance and many academic publications. You can find them on http://www.energyresearch.us/

Services

We aim to identify and treat the causes of your symptoms, such as discomfort, aches and pains, restrictions in movement. We treat specific complaints (such as lower back, neck, upper back and shoulders, tennis elbow, wrist, ankle) both directly and indirectly, by engaging other related muscles and soft tissues.

Your treatment will begin with an assessment, involving a Questionnaire and gentle movements and manipulations in order to demonstrate or replicate your pain or restriction. Its aim is to uncover where the pattern originates, and how the body has adapted (any compensation patterns).

Depending on our findings, we will offer a treatment plan that will combine some of established therapeutic styles into custom treatments.

We will draw on techniques from Positional release, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF), Myofascial release, Deep-tissue and trigger point therapies, Chinese deep-tissue massage, Swedish relaxation massage.

Other therapies offered:

  • Pregnancy massage
  • Lymphatic Drainage
  • Hot Stone massage
  • Bowen Therapy ®
  • Reiki

At the conclusion the therapist will share findings and offer relevant suggestions such as stretches, strengthening at-home exercises and/or complementary therapies that may be beneficial.

Reviews

“Skeptical at first but a believer now! I’ve been suffering from a spinal cord injury for many years now where decreased mobility, balance issues, back pain and muscle stiffness were my major hurdles. I have no idea how Anya did this but she must have magic, healing hands..! My balance has improved but the real difference is the muscle stiffness ! Some of the results were instant but the majority improved over time, weeks even months! I had been on elbow crutches for nearly 19 years but now they hardly get used. I’m soo grateful!! Thank you Anya”

“Anya is a kind and gentle person who looks for the best solution for the individual. Her sessions helped prevent niggles becoming injuries and released pressure spots all over.”

“I was really impressed by Anya’s therapeutic skills.
It seems like she has a complete anatomy map in her head. She knows the exact place and direction even of the smallest muscle and, somehow she, I don’t know, sees with her fingers where the problem lays.
She really uses her knowledge in the sense, that she combines her numerous methods to a unique mixture that serves her particular client the best.
She also gives very precisely designed exercises to help re-build or reorient different muscle groups, when needed.
Her knowledge, her understanding of the human body and, her flexible use of that knowledge is just impressive. Even for me.
(Nicolas, Integrative Dance and Movement Therapist)”

“I have been going to massage therapists every 1-2 weeks for my backpain, and the same pain used to come back. I had 2 sessions with Anya at Chi Flow Massage clinic. Since then, I’ve had no pain for 6 weeks, and didn’t need any more massage, although I continue with the same daily activities (I am a mens’ hairdresser and spend a lot of time on my feet). I highly recommend this clinic, if you want to resolve your pain and see visible improvement, instead of coming back for “a massage” again and again. You can also learn a lot about the causes of your pain.”
