Who we areDR VIRGIL CHAN

B.Med (Hon), FRANZCR

Virgil grew up in Newcastle and graduated from medical school with Honours at the University of Newcastle. He obtained his FRANZCR after completing his radiology training at the John Hunter Hospital in 2007. After undertaking a further 12 month fellowship in musculoskeletal radiology in Vancouver, Canada, he returned to the Hunter New England Local Health District, where he is currently a senior diagnostic and interventional staff specialist, as well as the Director of Training. Virgil's interests are in advanced musculoskeletal, sports and spinal imaging and intervention.

DR SHANE FERNANDO

B.Med, FRANZCR FAANMS

Shane graduated from the University of Newcastle. Following this, he trained in Radiology at the John Hunter Hospital receiving his FRANZCR. He is currently employed as a dual qualified Staff Specialist Diagnostic and Interventional Radiologist / Nuclear Medicine Physician in the Hunter New England Local Health District. His main interests lie in Interventional Radiology and Nuclear Imaging.

DR TOM MACDOUGALL

MBBS, BSc, PhD, FRCR, FRANZCR

Tom Macdougall studied medicine at University College London where he also obtained a PhD before training in radiology at Charing Cross and Hammersmith Hospitals in London. He gained the Rohan Williams Medal graduating top in the FRCR exams. Following this, he came to Australia to complete a fellowship in paediatric radiology at Westmead Children’s Hospital. He settled in the Hunter Valley in 2007, and maintains an active interest in paediatric radiology, being Director of Paediatric Radiology at John Hunter Hospital. He also has an interest in abdominal imaging, women’s imaging and musculoskeletal ultrasound.

DR AJAY THAKORLAL

MBBS, FRANZCR

Dr Ajay Thakorlal graduated in medicine in 1996 from The University of Sydney. He completed his radiology training and was admitted as a fellow of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists in 2009. Dr Ajay Thakorlal moved to Newcastle in 2004 and completed his training at the John Hunter Hospital before travelling to Ireland for a specialist fellowship in Interventional Radiology. His interests lie in general radiology, with particular focus in interventional radiological procedures. He is also currently working at the John Hunter Hospital as a staff specialist radiologist.
