Coast Yoga is the Iyengar Yoga Centre south of Adelaide near Brighton.

The Centre has been providing Iyengar yoga to Adelaide since 1994.

Vanessa Shribman is the director of Coast Yoga and has been accredited as an Iyengar Yoga teacher in Adelaide since 2000.

Iyengar yoga is named after BKS Iyengar who is considered the main and most influential proponent of modern yoga.

He was an inspiring master of yoga who came from humble beginnings to become the world authority on the practice of yoga.

His career spanned over 70 years until his death in 2014.

His method is based in classical yoga and the Yoga sutras of Patanjali.

Yoga means union. Iyengar yoga unites body, mind and breath and transforms them.

Our Iyengar yoga classes teach strength and stamina, flexibility and balance, concentration and meditation.

The search for expanded awareness in Iyengar yoga begins with an intense exploration of the physical body in every yoga posture.

The emphasis on awareness and alignment in Iyengar yoga teaches the student to ‘bring the mind in’ so that the consciousness slows and clarity and focus can develop.

This, over time, develops perspective, wisdom and reason.

The Method of Iyengar yoga

Iyengar yoga demands rigorous attention to the body in order to perfect the alignment of each pose.

This attention allows us to slough off the agitated and distracted mind and develop concentration and clarity.

This leads to a manageable and peaceful mind.

The authentic path of Iyengar yoga is a complete path leading to physical, emotional, mental and spiritual transformation.

Iyengar yoga is a progressive approach building the poses from class to class in an accessible way for each student starting with the simple poses and working towards the more complex.

We offer yoga classes at our Adelaide Coast Yoga centre for all abilities, from beginners to advanced level.

The skillful sequencing builds stamina, strength and flexibility.

Each class is sequenced for an entire body and mind workout.

In an Iyengar yoga class the teachers use various teaching methods engaging the different ways that we learn:

  • Teachers use precise language so that students understand how to do the poses.
  • Teachers will demonstrate the poses for students who learn from visual cues.
  • Teachers are trained to adjust students so that they may learn from sensory cues.
  • Teachers are deeply embedded in their own daily practice and therefore teach through direct knowledge. Iyengar yoga is a system of direct lineage where understanding comes directly from practice.

Iyengar yoga uses props such as blankets and blocks to help find alignment in the yoga poses.

Iyengar yoga is a rigorous practice designed for the able bodied however BKS Iyengar was renowned for his therapeutic approach which makes Iyengar yoga accessible to those with injuries or illness.

Coast Yoga’s Iyengar classes support each individual student in the class.

The teacher is trained to see what support you may need to reach your potential in the class.
