As the founder and principal of accounting businesses serving clients across Australia for over 35 years, Don has worked with countless accountants – in many cases, meeting them as graduates and helping them become successful CPAs and Public Accountants.

As CEO of Etax Accountants and Etax Local, Don helps drive innovation forward in the efficient use of online systems to deliver professional services to clients – adapting to modern changes in where, when and how people want to receive financial services.

Don commenced practice in Brisbane in 1978 and built a network of accounting offices throughout Queensland. A Certified Management Consultant, Don served as Chairman of the Queensland Government Consultants Advisory Committee for three years. Don participates frequently in computing, taxation and accounting conferences nationally.

For his committed to community service and his role as the founder of the Lest We Forget Runs developed across Australia, Don received the Prime Minister’s Sport Recognition Award. Don was the first Australian to complete a marathon on all seven continents of the world. He has completed over 50 marathons – and counting – half of them at challenging international locations.

Don’s wife Trish (also a marathon runner) and their five children are all qualified Accountants, all directly involved in the family accounting businesses.

Scott brings over a decade of experience in management consulting, finance, tax and IT. At the age of 18, he developed and co-founded one of Australia’s leading online tax return firms, Etax Accountants. He is also the founder of Red Heart Ride (an adventure tourism company), Abarcus (dynamic pricing software) and CEO of Accounts Etcetera which is one of Brisbane’s largest bookkeeping firms.

Scott brings international experience and know-how as a result of his employment with the Boston Consulting Group, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Balkanu Cape York Development Corporation which supports the economic development of Aboriginal people in Cape York.

Kent Griffin is a co-founder and Director of Etax Accountants and Etax Local, having developed the original software that the businesses rely on today. He is responsible for technology in the firm and is always on the lookout for the latest emerging technologies, ensuring Etax Local and Etax Accountants remain at the forefront of IT in the accounting industry.

Kent brings over 17 years of experience in Information Technology management, holding various leadership positions during this time including work for the IT advisory division at KPMG.

Under Kent’s direction Etax Accountants has led the online tax industry in Australia, being early adopters in PKI digital signature technology to build consumer trust in the Internet and, more recently, leading users of the latest SSL online security and cloud computing technologies.

I used Etax for the first time this year. I was really impressed from the outset. The website was easy to navigate, and suggestions prompting what I may be able to claim on (that I hadn’t thought of) were helpful. It was fun watching the calculator add up my return estimate! It was simple, user friendly and I’d recommend it to anyone.

But to top it off completely, I was managed by an incredible woman named Dimetra, who checked to see if I was eligible for any further claims etc. Beyond this, she asked for my permission to negotiate a debt I had with the ATO, as she knew how desperate I was to receive a refund and that with an ATO debt, they would use my refund to wipe what they could.

Being a sole parent, with a child who has had a dreadful 12 months due to ill health, having someone look out for me like this – without being asked – was an incredibly welcome surprise. It’s not everyday complete strangers choose to go above and beyond.

Not only did Dimetra manage to deal with the ATO on my behalf, she came back to me with the fantastic news that I would indeed be receiving my refund, as she had managed to negotiate brilliantly with the ATO, with a simply amazing outcome.

I cannot thank Dimetra enough for her outstanding service – for the care she showed me and the outcome. I am still on cloud nine! I hope she is too.

Since writing this review, Etax got in touch with me via the phone with a really thorough and genuine apology. They also gave me extra time and attention in order to get my bill reduced and claim further deductions that I did not realise I was eligible for.

Thanks very much to supervisor Thomas who led the resolution process and answered all of my questions. He really turned things around for me and provided excellent customer service.

I have now revised my rating and review to reflect how I feel about the final product of my tax return.

If you had asked me this question last year, I would have given you five stars without hesitation and recommended your services to friends (In fact, I did tell others how pleased I was). But this year, I was left very unsupported during a difficult tax return.

When I used your services last year, it was quick, easy, and very much worth the money. This year, I had a more complex tax return because I did work as a sole trader with an ABN for the first time. I had no idea where to begin, and this section of your system is far harder and far more complex than the standard wages/salary part. This is mainly because it is filled with the kind of jargon that you have eliminated from the more commonly-used sections. I found the jargon impenetrable, and I’m not at all convinced that I got the best return possible. I now owe a substantial amount of money to the ATO, which is a bit of a shock.

The tips/help button only threw up a blank screen on my computer (running Firefox 49.0.1 on a Mac with El Capitan). I chatted with one of the accountants on the chat feature, but was only told the same jargon. Nothing was translated into a form that I could understand. I sent an email asking for help a few days ago and have had no reply yet. I decided to just go ahead and lodge anyway because the due date is so close.

I promise I’m not a complete and utter idiot! I actually spend quite a bit of my working life teaching Masters of Economic students how to communicate more clearly with an audience who aren’t trained in their field. Now I feel like I’m that untrained audience, and that communication choices aren’t being made to suit me. I have never had any bookkeeping training, and I assume there are quite a few sole traders around who are in a similar position to me. We can’t all understand and fill in the more complex sections of the tax return without your help and without some degree of translation from the impenetrable tax parlance of the ATO.

I feel as though I may as well just have done it myself (for free!) rather than paying for help I never actually received.”
