FAQ’S

IS IT PAINFUL?

It is not painful at all but the sensation varies according to each individual. I use topical anaesthetics that are specifically developed for our industry and the feedback I get is…”I can’t feel a thing,” “It tickles,” “I can feel vibration but that’s it” or “It’s scratchy,” whereby I apply more anaesthetics.
Contrary to what you’d expect, the eyeliner procedure is painless!

To put this in perspective, millions of body art tattoos are performed annually, without the use of any anaesthetics!
Anesthetics for cosmetic tattoo’s is a necessary luxury because I aim to create the most comfortable experience for you.

What Is Cosmetic Tattooing?

Cosmetic tattooing is a semi-permanent tattoo procedure. It is also called “Semi-permanent cosmetics,” “Derma Pigmentation,” “Micropigmentation,” and “Permanent Make-up.”

Cosmetic Tattooing is mostly used to simulate conventional makeup for eyes, brows and lips. Lost brows, eye lashes, and even hair in the scalp can be simulated effectively with hair like strokes of colour.

The process includes a consultation, the application of pigment, and at least one follow up visit for evaluating the healed design work and color of the healed pigment.

This procedure is called “semi-permanent” because all tattoos fade progressively from UV exposure, body chemistry, and macrophage activity. Clients should take great care to select the right person to apply their cosmetic tattoo.

FOR WHOM IS SEMI-PERMANENT MAKEUP SUITABLE?

Anyone from 18yrs-90yrs

Clients who live in warm climates
Men or women with sparse eyelashes, missing eyebrow hairs, and asymmetrical features
Clients who have active lifestyles who worry about “sweating off” cosmetics
Clients who don’t have time to spend applying or refreshing make-up
Clients who have trouble with makeup running and smearing.
Contact lens wearers who can’t get makeup products in their eyes.
Clients with poor vision making make-up application difficult.
People who cannot wear traditional cosmetics due to sensitivities to the perfumes and preservatives in conventional cosmetics.
Alopecia clients
Clients who have a physical disability and cannot apply make-up.
Cancer patients prior to chemotherapy.
Men also get permanent eyelash enhancement or eyebrow tattoo’s.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM MY FIRST APPOINTMENT?

At your first visit, you’ll fill out paperwork.  You can wear your own makeup to show me what you think you’d like (but avoid waterproof mascara). Only when we’ve agreed about shape, color and placement, and we both understand what that means, do I apply semi-permanent colour.  I apply topical anesthetic to the area I will tattoo.  It will take 30 minutes for the surface of the skin to numb up. You may still have a little sensation as I work, it would be a tickling that isn’t bad at all.  I reinforce the anaesthetic as I work. The first appointment takes ~2Hrs and the touch-up appointment ~1.5Hrs.

   IS IT SAFE?

Professionals in the semi-permanent cosmetic industry routinely attend Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) classes to become well versed on safety principals.

Needles are sterile, single use and should be opened in your presence.
Disposable one-time use machine parts are disposed of immediately after the procedure has been completed.
Gloves, barrier film, pigments, anesthetic and pigment cups are new for each client and changed during the procedure when needed.
The technician should be clean and neat.
The room or treatment area should be in an area free from other contaminants. The SPCP has taken a position against semi-permanent cosmetic procedures conducted at trade shows and in salons where nail dust, aerosols or other chemicals are present.

WHY NOT JUST GO TO A TATTOO PARLOUR?

Tattoo parlors have employees who are fine artists,  however there are  differences which are extremely important. The colors in regular tattoos are normally unmixed, pure, vibrant hues which do not resemble hair colours. The colours used in cosmetic tattooing are specially blended for our industry. A good semi-permanent makeup artist must know a cool blonde brow from a warm blonde brow, and how to create the difference. Semi-permanent makeup application requires the knowledge to create the look that’s right for you in the long term. A good cosmetic tattoo should be designed to blend with your features, enhance their shape, correct asymmetries, and be unobtrusive when it’s finished.

WHAT CAN’T YOU DO WITH COSMETIC TATTOOS?

Permanent makeup should not be used to try to cover dark, red or brown scars, undereye circles, hemangiomas, or brown spots on the surface of the skin.  It is not a cover up in the same sense that camouflage makeup would be.  It almost never stays in vitiligo skin.  It should not be used to colour a mole black like a beauty mark, because it will interfere with the ability of a physician to diagnose any change in the tissue.

CAN I STILL HAVE AN MRI SCAN?

Numerous studies have shown that people who have large body tattoos there is little to no potential for irritation resulting from an MRI. In the rare instance where warming resulted, it was localized and very temporary. However, advise your MRI technician that you have a cosmetic tattoo.
