How laser tattoo removal works

Here’s how laser tattoo removal works.  Tattoos are made up of ink, or pigment, which has been inserted into the dermis.  This is the layer of the skin underneath the outermost layer – the epidermis.  The ink is made up of particles too large to be absorbed by the body and remains ‘trapped’ in several layers

During Q-switched laser treatment very short and quick pulses of concentrated energy are selectively absorbed by the ink, shattering the particles into smaller pieces. Different pigment colours absorb different wavelengths of laser light. That’s why it is important to be treated by a laser system that operates multiple wavelengths.

These tiny particles are then absorbed naturally by the lymphatic system and eliminated from the body. This process of removal takes several weeks. Tattoo ink is layered into the skin, and this means that tattoos require multiple treatments for complete removal. It is like removing several coats of paint from a door. Each subsequent treatment targets the next layer of pigment.

Q-switched laser for Safe, pain free tattoo removal

The tattoo removal laser that is used by Fade to Blank is the Quanta Q-Plus C. Manufactured in Europe, this medical-grade laser is the only true 3 wavelength Q-switched laser in the world. The Quanta Q-Plus C sets a new standard in multi-coloured tattoo removal. It actually has two Q-switched lasers in one machine, an Nd:YAG, and a ruby. These two lasers generate 3 wavelengths:

The Nd:YAG laser operating at 1064nm – a near invisible (infrared) light – targets blacks, black-blues and dark greens.

The Nd:YAG also operates at 532nm – a green light – and targets reds and oranges.

The ruby laser operates at 694nm – a red light – targets the tough lime greens and sky blues.

The laser machines at most other clinics do not feature the ruby laser and therefore they are not able to remove the light blues and greens. However, sometimes they simulate the ruby’s wavelength using impregnated dye handpieces that filter the light. However, these handpiece systems are much weaker in power, because a larger percentage (sometimes upwards of 70%) of the laser energy is blocked by the filter. As a result, handpiece systems are largely ineffective, especially in later treatment stages when powerful pulses are most needed.

The Quanta Q-Plus C delivers the tattoo removal laser energy in a square spot size. This means that the energy is distributed evenly over the target area without ‘hot spots’, greatly reducing any complications such as burning or scarring.

First Consultation

The first time you pop in and talk to us about your tattoo removal treatment, we’ll try to keep things as straight forward as possible. We’ll spend a little while assessing your skin type, getting to know you and your tattoo, and filling you in on the important details such as price and time frame. While we’re at it, we’ll snap a few pictures of your ink, just so we can track the changes for future reference.

All first consultations with us are free and friendly, and you’re under no obligation to sign up for anything at all.

Tattoo Removal Treatment

Once the first consultation is out of the way, you’ll be able to begin treatment immediately if you wish.

Treatment takes just a few minutes, and is surprisingly less painful than you’d expect it to be. Our cryogenic cooling machine will make sure you’re comfortable the whole way through. This expensive piece of kit blows cold air on to the skin while you’re undergoing your tattoo removal procedure, keeping discomfort at a minimum. If you’d like extra pain relief, we have topical anaesthetic creams on hand, but most find they don’t need them.

Post Tattoo Removal Treatment

After treatment is over, we’ll apply an antiseptic cream to your tattooed area and cover it with a light dressing. Hopefully, you’ll have found it all to be rather uneventful and will be excited about having your next one with us. To ensure everything runs smoothly after you’ve left, we’ll give you written aftercare instructions to help you minimise discomfort and optimise the healing process.

In 8 weeks time, after your body has had a chance to remove the shattered ink particles, you’ll be able to schedule your next session.

How much does tattoo removal cost?

The cost of tattoo removal is determined by the size of the tattoo and the number of treatments required. During the initial consultation we will measure your tattoo and calculate the price for a single treatment based on its size and ink coverage area in square cm. There is no additional charge for multi-coloured tattoos.
