Acupuncture

Acupuncture has developed over a period of at least 5000 years.

It is a method of Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM which is a holistic form of Medicine and can treat you physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It can be used for acute or chronic conditions.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into Acupuncture points on the skin.

Techniques are applied to these points to regulate the Energy or Qi (as it is called in TCM), that flows through the body.

Acupuncture points are sites on the skin through which the energy of the organs and meridians comes to the surface.

These points are located on 12 Meridians each being linked to an organ. Our Life Force Energy or Qi flows through these Meridians and nourishes the organs, muscles, joints, skin … everything!

Sometimes the energy can become blocked or deficient causing illness and painful conditions.

Acupuncture can clear or move blocked energy which is often the cause of painful conditions or it can increase the energy flow to points of deficiency.

Acupuncture aims to correct any imbalances in the body by correcting the flow of energy around the body encouraging smooth flow of Qi and blood. This will improve  general health.

Other methods which are often used in conjunction with Acupuncture are Moxibustion, Cupping, Massage and Chinese Herbs.

TCM is very effective in treating many kinds of disease and painful conditions which is why it has lasted throughout the ages.

Chinese Herbs

Chinese herbs are very effective in conjunction with Acupuncture in treating various conditions – infertility, digestive issues and anxiety just to name a few.

Herbal formulas are in granular or pill form and are prescribed to suit individual needs. Chinese herbs are practitioner brand only and are of the highest quality.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion or Moxa is the burning of a herb (Mugwort) and is used to treat conditions by applying heat to Acupuncture points or areas of the body.

Moxa in the form of a cone or a stick is used by an Acupuncturist to warm and nourish the Qi and Blood.

The stick looks like a cigar and is held about 2 inches from the skin above an Acupuncture point or area.
It is used to warm the channels and expel cold eg. when you have a condition which is worse in cold weather such as joint pain or a condition which is made better for warmth eg hot water bottle for period pain.. It drives the cold out of the body.

Another reason for a practitioner to use Moxa is to nourish the Qi and blood – is used for depleted energy or weakness and can also boost the Yang energy and boost immunity and fertility.

(Used to treat prolapsed uterus)

Cupping

Cupping is a method in which small glass jars are placed on the skin and a vacuum is created.

It is used alone or in combination with Acupuncture to treat various conditions such as cold hands and feet and asthma.

The function of cupping is to promote the free flow of Qi and Blood in the meridians.

It reduces pain and swelling, expels cold and dampness from the channels, treats colds and flu as well as asthma.
