A permanent wave, commonly called a perm, involves the use of chemicals to break and reform the bonds of the hair The hair is washed and wrapped on a perm rod and waving lotion is applied with a base. This solution creates a chemical reaction that softens the inner structure of the hair by breaking some of the cross links within and between the protein chains of the hair. The hair swells, stretches and softens, then molds around the shape of the perm rod.

An early alternative method for curling hair that was suitable for use on people was invented in 1905 by German hairdresser Charles Nessler. He used a mixture of cow urine and water.

What is Balayage?

Balayage, a French word meaning ‘to sweep’ is a new method of highlighting which lightens the hair gradually from root to tip. This technique has taken salons from Perth to Sydney by storm, because it achieves an ultra-natural effect by mimicking nature’s way of lightening hair. Hair should always be darker on the base of the hair shaft or the root area, rather then having light roots and dark ends. To balayage the hair, a lightening agent is painted on using a brush and paddle in a sweeping motion giving the hair colorist a bit more room to play and less methodical streaks. The result is a gorgeous sun-kissed color of various shades of blond and honey-tones that look as if you just spent the summer frolicking on the beach.

What happens during a GK “The Best” keratin treatment?
During “The Best” treatment the hair is first washed, with a clarifying shampoo, to open up the cuticles. Then the treatment is applied, which contains keratin. It is then left to process the timing will depend on the result required. The treatment is then rinced from the hair. Heat can now be applied through blow drying then straightening irons. The heat seals the treatment into the hair and so reduces the frizz.

What does hair look like after it has been treated?
“The Best” treatment makes the hair look shiny and healthier. Your hair will also feel softer. Keratin provides a lot of nutrients for the hair; hence it looks so good afterwards.

How long does the treatment last?
“The Best” treatment lasts up to four to five months, maybe longer if hair is washed infrequently.The treatment is not permanent and it eventually washes out. The more the hair is washed, the quicker the keratin will be washed out.

Is “The Best” smooth keratin therapy going to make my hair straight?
All hair types differ. The treatment is designed to make the hair easier and quicker to manage. Some people may be able to “wash & go’ whereas others will have to add some heat to their hair in order to get a straighter result. You may want to ask your hairdresser to perform a strand test before proceeding with the treatment to get a realistic idea of what your result will be.

Is “The Best” a relaxer?
No. The treatment is a keratin based treatment that sedates frizz and revitalises hair.

Can “The Best” Treatment be done on any type of hair?
Yes, this treatment can be done on coloured, highlighted, relaxed, bleached, permed and virgin hair.

Does “The Best” Treatment work on virgin hair?
Yes. On virgin hair results will improve with each application.

When is the best time to colour my hair?
It is best to colour hair either 2 weeks before or 2 weeks after the treatment however there are exceptions to this rule. Please speak to your Stylist about your colour needs.

Can the treatment be done on children?
We recommend children at 12 years of age and over.

What if I don’t like having straight hair or this treatment?
The treatment can be washed out with a sodium chloride shampoo; it is not permanent like other chemical straighteners.

Can I wash my hair after the treatment?
YES !!! You can using GK shampoo and conditioner.

If I want to get my hair done again, do I have to redo the whole head or can I just have a touch up?
There are no touch ups with the treatment. You will get the treatment done again from the roots to ends. Remember it repairs your hair more every time.

What shampoo and conditioner should be used after “The Best” treatment?
For best results use the GK sodium chloride free shampoo and conditioner. Sodium chloride washes out the keratin faster.

Can I get “The Best” treatment done on a monthly basis?
YES, you may have it as often as you would like.

Can I cut my hair before “The Best” treatment?
We recommend that you cut your hair after having “The Best” treatment as your hair will fall differently and appear longer.

When can I use styling products
Styling products can straight away.

Can I get “The Best” treatment done while pregnant or nursing?
While there is no scientific research to the contrary, you should consult with your doctor before undertaking the treatment.

Can I go swimming in a pool or sea?
Yes but sea water and chlorine reduce the life span of the treatment. Sea water, which is salt water (and salt is Sodium Chloride), and chlorine can strip the keratin out of the hair quicker than normal water. When swimming in a pool or ocean, it is recommended that you use “The Best” leave in products to protect your hair.

What’s the difference between chemical straightening and “The Best” treatment?
“The Best” treatment is a keratin based hair treatment that smooths the hair. It can also help recondition the hair and restores shine. The treatment does not alter the hair structure. Chemical straighteners work by breaking and rearranging the internal bonds of the hair (identified by the use of a neutralising mask).

Can I do the GK “The Best” treatment at home?
No. The procedure involves a long and detailed hair straightening process using irons and driers. It takes over 2 hours, and this is not something somebody can “have ago at”. DIY is not recommended!
