Meet Simon

Stylist and Founder: Simon Lumsden

Hair Merchants of Unley was created in response to over a decade of working in a large multi stylist salon and working for Redken 5th Ave NYC as an educator both here and Melbourne.

Visiting many types of salons from the owner operated like mine to large formidable salons in the industry both here and interstate.

But where did it all start and why hairdressing?

Hairdressing was not always my path to success. Having trained as a classical ballet dancer from the age of 5 my dream was to dance. However due to injuries after a stint at The Australian Ballet School that wasn’t to be.

With a few years of finding my feet again (pun intended) in retail an hospitality I needed a new challenge.

By this time I was 26 and looking for an apprenticeship against those fresh out of school. However after a short search a salon was found in the leafy village of Stirling.

And the next few years were filled with intensive training and honing my craft, using those skills learnt in the ballet studio – determination, dedication and discipline.

After five years I was successful in gaining a position as a product educator with Redken. My preferred product to use in salon still. This role took me into many salons over the next four years both here and interstate.

The highlight of this time was being awarded “National Educator of the Year 2007” for excellence in education.

However the desire to return home to family and friends was too great. Taking a position back at the salon in Stirling, I remained there for the next three years until a opportunity to be self employed at a friend’s salon in the city came my way.

Getting used to the environment of one on one salon time with clients took no time at all and became my preferable way to work! No passing clients over to others to create what I want/they wanted, getting lost in translation.

So then what?

Over a year ago it all changed! Another opportunity presented itself and with a big leap of faith. I took over a sad and tired salon. Needing a big clean out and a colour change, I opened after just one week.

The salon itself has a life of it’s own, always evolving and changing. With new things to see on most visits the salon offers an eclectic taste of vintage/retro décor thanks to my partner’s eye for detail.

So where to now?

To continue to offer that one on one service. Providing the clients with the best the industry has to offer with Redken 5th Ave products. To create beautiful shiny hair that always looks it’s best, not just the day of your salon visit!
