Our Treatments

Treatments are carried out by qualified massage therapists with extensive experience beyond their Diploma of Remedial Massage. Disciplines are fused together to provide a unique experience suited to the individual. Great consideration is taken to ensure you feel soothed, safe and relaxed throughout the experience. They include: remedial and sports massage, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, reiki, hawaiian and relaxation massage, hot stone fusion, acupressure and swedish massage. We use only the highest quality, natural Tui Body Balms that we import from New Zealand and non-refined coconut oil. Adding an element of nature’s healing power, leaving the client’s skin refreshed and nourished.

About our therapists:

Jem Pickford (owner/therapist)

Jem’s philosophy towards massage therapy is to have the least amount of therapeutic intervention, serving more as a conduit to enable the body to heal itself. In Jem’s pursuit of muscularskeletal pain he fuses the dynamic disciplines of trigger point therapy, myofascial release, advanced stretching, acupressure, and energy and breathing techniques, to relieve complaints of pain and dysfunction. Jem is currently adding to his already extensive list of training, undertaking a BA of Health Science in Musculoskeletal Therapy (MST). Clients are already experiencing the benefits of this fusion in biomedical and clinical science. MST provides the practitioner with the skills to assess and diagnose, treat, rehabilitate and program injury prevention. Therapists often work closely with other health professionals. The extent of Jem’s fascination surrounding the body’s healing properties is obvious throughout his career history. Before taking over the clinic in 2006, he taught graduate courses in Oxford UK and post-graduate Advanced Clinical Massage courses in Brighton, UK. Jem’s passion for massage therapy and the need to learn more lead him to the Jing Institute of Advance Massage Training, UK. After completing all the available courses, the Directors and founders of Jing, Rachel Fairweather & Megan Mari invited him to be one of the first assistant trainers. Under their stewardship he spent two life-changing years before immigrating to Australia in 2006.
Jem continues to advance his knowledge and skills by regularly attending post-graduate courses and now undertaking MST.
Jem’s previous education encompasses Holistic and Therapeutic Massage – Oxford School of Massage UK, Anatomy, Physiology and Body Massage ITEC UK, Acupressure Massage Touch Pro UK, and Remedial Massage – Northern Institute of Massage, Bury, UK. The Jing Institute of Advanced Massage Training, Brighton, UK. From his training at the Northern Institute of Massage and The Jing Institute of Advanced Massage Training he was made a full member of London and Counties Society of Physiologists (L.C.S.P Register). Jem is also a member of the Australian Traditional Medicine Society (ATMS -2246).

Trigger point therapy: A trigger point is found in the muscles or connective tissue at the source of pain. Often the pain can refer away from the trigger point area, and be felt in other areas of the body. With an attentive touch, the therapist endeavours to find the source and reduce the hyperirritable point by holding or compressing with static pressure.

Myofascial Release (MFR):
Myo: Muscle: Greek
Fascia: Band, Bandage Latin
Fascia is a structure of tissue, both superficial and deep, that forms a three dimensional matrix of connective tissue, the fascial continunim. This extends throughout the body from head to toe. The method of MFR engages the fascia, using little or no oil to achieve a release of the connective tissue.

Reiki: This spiritual practise developed in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist which has been adapted over the years. The westernised forms use systematised hand-placements rather than relying on an intuitive sense of hand-positions which is commonly used by Japanese Reiki branches. The practitioners believe that they are transferring universal energy, (Reiki) life-force, or energy flow, through the palms, which allows for self-healing and a state of equilibrium.
Advanced Stretching:
Passive, Active-Isolated & PNF
PNF – Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation is a stretching technique performed passively or as an active assisted exercise. The therapist uses a relaxation technique (a hold-relax or contractrelax), with the aim to create a greater range of motion for an individual or group of muscles.

Acupressure: This is an evolved form of “Amma” known to Traditional Chinese Medicine & in the traditional Japanese table massage. Acupressure is an adaptation of these Eastern disciplines by applying pressure to specific points called acupressure points to relieve the body of pain.

Energy & Breath techniques: Energetic deep breathing may also facilitate the release of connective tissue throughout the body. Here the therapist initiates or encourages a client to breath through a massage technique or a muscle stretch.
