In the Beginning…
Over 60 years ago, brothers Henry and Richard Bloch founded the company known today as H&R Block. The pair began working together in the late 1940s, operating the United Business Company, which provided bookkeeping services to small businesses in Kansas City, Missouri.
As an added courtesy, the brothers offered individual income tax return preparation to the executives of their client companies. Word of this particular service spread, and before long, they were preparing individual tax returns by the score. Henry and Richard saw that concentrating on tax preparation services would be both an innovative and sound business venture. Thus, H&R Block Inc. was formed in 1955, with Henry as president and chief executive officer and Richard as chairman of the board.

In 1971, H&R Block opened its first four offices in Australia, in Sydney and Melbourne. The next year, it opened offices in all capital cities, and has been growing strongly ever since.

“Do NOT use this company, without doubt the worst service and a total lack of customer care. I wrote the letter below over three weeks ago to Denise, the manager at HR Block Kallangur as well as a copy to their head office, not surprisingly, I have still had no reply from them at all. ”
“I write this letter as an extremely unhappy customer (13/08/16).
I have used HR block for the last three years for my tax return however my experience this year has been an absolute joke. My wife any myself went to your Kallangur office on Friday the 15th of July to complete our tax return which was a standard tax return with the addition of a new investment property. To start with when making the appointment I explained in detail that the appointment was for myself and my wife and that it included a new investment property that had a depreciation schedule from your recommended quantity surveyors. We attended the appointment will all the relevant documents and figures at hand in a well organised manner. When attending the appointment that the staff gave, at the beginning of this meeting we were told that they could start the return but they would not be able to finish it that day and we would have to return as they were very busy. I was shocked to say the least and informed the consultant that if they were only going to be able to start our return that day needing us to come back due to a lack of organisation on their part that we would take our business elsewhere as the appointment that was made meant that we had to make arrangements for time off from work. We were assured after this point that we would now indeed be able to get our return completed that day, between two and three hours later our return was complete and we paid the $634 that was requested.
Our consultant was Denise, the Kallangur branch manager. When completing our return I asked if she knew how long the return would take to come through, she informed me that the waiting time for payout form the ATO is around two weeks. Three and a half weeks after this meeting, we had still not had the money from the ATO or in fact any correspondence from them at all, so I contacted the ATO on the 8th of August requesting an update as to why our refund was delayed, they informed me that they had not actually received our return from our tax agent, you can imagine my shock to hear this. I returned from a business trip three days later on Thursday the 11th of August and contacted HR block in Kallangur to find out what was going on; I was informed that my return was submitted. I asked Denise when this was done, she told me that she is very busy and would not be able to get this information to me until the afternoon. In the afternoon I got a call from Denise letting me know once again that the return was submitted and I should get my refund on Monday the 18th. I once again asked what date this return was submitted, I was told again that she did not have this information to hand but would find out.
I was absolutely outraged to receive an email back from one of the office managers in Kalllangur today (13/08/2016) telling me that the return was only logged on 08/08/2016 a total of twenty four days after we supplied all requested information and completed our return. This is absolutely unacceptable and I demand a full explanation as to why I was misled, being told that my return was lodged on the day of my visit and why on earth my return was only submitted over three weeks after I had paid the fee and supplied all information requested. This is a total disgrace on behalf of a company that advertises its professionalism on TV. If we are not given a written apology and a refund in full, I will be taking this matter further in every avenue that I can to warn potential customers what a terrible customer experience and lack of care is provided by HR block, unlike the professional image they try to show on their adverts.”
