One of a kind bride – Celebrating with Neelam

When Neelam had come in for her makeup trial earlier this year, I was pleasantly surprised at how she did not deter from her desire for a completely natural makeup look.

I’ve learnt that, when it comes to Indian brides in particular, ‘natural’ makeup DOES ironically include golden eyeshadow!! With Neelam however, she meant natural in the true sense of the word as it resonates with makeup artists. While it was a delightful change to the Indian-wedding norm, I must admit that I wasn’t too convinced at first after considering the bridal outfit colours.

Behind the Scenes at Dilasha’s wedding

Dilasha walked down the stairs in her sea-green ‘anarkali’ outfit and looked her part – that of a beautiful bride-to-be! The Mehndi day was finally here for this joyful Nepalese family.

Dilasha (or Dash, as her friends call her), more Australian than Nepalese, is a successful and a very busy family law practitioner with a large firm. Although we didn’t have extensive contact prior to the wedding functions, it was a delight meeting this young lady on the mehndi day, at her parents’ cozy Newmarket residence.

Not being the most traditional bride, Dilasha wanted a very simple-styled design, far from the conventional grandiosity of Indian bridal henna. As an artist, I.

Tanisha has got to be one of the cutest people I know. She’s sweet and petite, and looks like she’s just out of high school! Tiny as she is, Tanisha is currently nurturing a successful career in marketing.

I was invited to do Tanisha’s bridal mehndi as well as mehndi for her family & friends.

When I asked Tanisha what kind of look she had in mind for her bridal henna, I was pleasantly surprised by her rather contemporary boho-inspired choice when she browsed through my henna look book.

The foot design that she chose as inspiration was a gorgeous creation by Darcy Vasudev’s Henna Lounge.

From Legacy to Logo

‘Small beginnings, Arty endings’ was our first tagline when Khatoons was just set-up, and aptly so. Khatoons was the chosen business name as a tribute to artist Sharmeen’s creative and enterprising grandmother, who against all odds set-up a beauty salon back in the day in India.

The salon is called Khatoons (in the city of Hyderabad), and has been up going strong for 40 years now.

That name is more than just legacy to us. When our little version of the Khatoons was setup in Brisbane, we started with offering henna art and hand-crafted goodies and a small inventory of jewelry.
