La Pennys salon

When Penny Symington opened La Penny’s salon on Market Lane 18 months ago, she wanted to offer both men and women the best haircut and hair colour in Manly NSW.

She decided to offer a free beer with men’s $35 haircuts, an initiative that has proved popular.

“The salon looked quite girly and I just wanted to let men know that they were welcome too,” she said.

“I’ve had great feedback, lots of people appreciate a beer while they relax and get their hair cut or hair colour”

La pennys salon also has complimentary glasses of wine on offer while having any hair cut, even on sundays.

Client John Clagnan said enjoying a beer with his haircut made it an even more relaxing experience.

“It’s a good way to wind up the day,” he said.

Hair & Beauty Industry Association chief executive Sandra Campitelli said serving one glass of alcohol to clients was an offering that had been around for many years. “It’s nice for clients on, say, a Thursday night to be able to relax with a glass of wine,” she said.

Ms Campitelli said many hairdressers also gave their clients a free lunch and complimentary espressobased coffees.

“It enhances their experience and makes them feel pampered,” she said.
