Hair’s a story of Legendary Barbers

The old-style barber shop with all the “tonsorial art” of a skilled barber plying sharp scissors, cut-throat razors with hot towels and face massages of soothing lotions all mean a new experience for men having a haircut and close shave at Modbury.

That’s because the Master Barber of Reservoir Road, Ramat Karimiyan, has seen how modern men not only take more interest in clothes styles and dress but now also are realizing that their hair grooming and facial appearance are important to the way they look.

And Ramat has a wealth of experience to recognize how men want changes with their grooming because he has been a barber for 27 years since starting as a young man in the Kurdish region of his native country of Iran.

After coming to Australia with his wife 19 years ago he continued his craft in Sydney –adapting to the Aussie square-cut and short-back-and sides styles.

They settled in Adelaide in 2004 and since then Ramat has had his own popular hairdressing business at Shop 5 in the small shopping complex at 68 Reservoir Road, Modbury.

For the past two years he has planned to bring back the look and craft of the old-style barber’s shop where men’s grooming once was an art.

Now, his plans are a reality. He has re-equipped, redecorated and transformed his hairdresser’s shop into Legendary Barbers – a salon in the true barber shop tradition – including the red, white and blue spinning barber’s pole at the front door.

There are leather sofas, stylish timber cupboards and shelves displaying men’s toiletries, and four proper barbershop chairs each with a black porcelain basin for hair wash and shave, steamers for hot facial towels to add to the experience and mirrors to see it all happening. There’s even free coffee while sitting in the chair, or waiting for attention.
