Services
Swedish/Relaxation Massage
This is a smooth, relaxing massage composed of gently increasing levels of pressure. It improves the circulation, relieves muscular tension, improves the range of movement, and promotes an increased feeling of well-being and relaxation. It also stimulates your lymphatic system, helping the body to rid itself of stored toxins and strengthening your immune system. The elimination of these toxins and metabolic wastes shortens recovery time after intense exercise. Your nervous system also benefits from Swedish massage, which is why it’s so closely associated with relaxation and pampering. In fact, regular massage is often recommended as part of an overall stress management program.
Remedial Massage
Remedial Massage is the umbrella term for massage aimed at correcting a problem or imbalance. It is a varied therapy and combines a number of different techniques such as massage, trigger points, myofascial release and lymphatic drainage techniques to work on damaged or sore muscles, soft tissue or joints. It can be used to release trapped nerves and correct damaged muscle tissue, manage pain, as well as to soften hard muscles which have caused joint restriction and structural misalignment.
Conditions effectively treated by Remedial Massage include; muscular aches and pains, sporting injuries, acute muscle strains and tears, chronic muscle injuries, tendonitis, headaches, neck pain and stiffness, shoulder strains and impingement syndromes, tennis and golfers elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, mid back stiffness, lower back pain and stiffness, lumbar instability, gluteal pain, sciatic pain, leg pain and muscle spasm associated with arthritic conditions.
Sports Massage
Sports massage is designed to enhance athletic performance and recovery and help loosen and stretch muscles. Sports massage helps athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training. But you don’t have to be in the Olympics to benefit from sports massage. It is also good for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of motion. Regular sports massage can help speed up recovery, assists in injury prevention and promote greater endurance and flexibility.
Deep Tissue Massage
A deep tissue massage is designed to relieve severe tension in the muscle and the connective tissue or fascia. This type of massage focuses on the muscles located below the surface of the top muscles. Deep tissue massage is often recommended for individuals who experience consistent pain, are involved in heavy physical activity (such as athletes), and patients who have sustained physical injury. It is not uncommon for receivers of deep tissue massage to have their pain replaced with a new muscle ache for a day or two.
Trigger Point Therapy
A trigger point (TP) is a hyperirritable spot that is painful. It is called a trigger point because it “triggers” a painful response. But a TP is more than a tender nodule. It affects not only the muscle where the TP is located, but also causes “referred pain” in tissues supplied by nerves. TPs are located in a taut band of muscles fibers. The trigger point is the most tender point in the band. The therapist will locate and deactivate them using digital pressure. One technique is to pick up the muscle fibers in a pincer grip. A TP can be acute and therefore painful or latent and will only be noticed by the client as soon as the therapist applies pressure onto the area.
Pregnancy Massage
Designed for this very special time in your life, this gentle massage takes into consideration the little miracle growing within. You are treated in positions that are comfortable for both you and your baby, comfortably supported and surrounded by pillows, massage may be enjoyed throughout your entire pregnancy.
As the baby grows often excess strain and tension is placed on your back and your skins elasticity. It is highly recommended to have a regular program of massage during your pregnancy to reduce stress, alleviate discomfort and prevent the development of stretch marks.
Aromatherapy Massage
This is a combination of massage and the therapeutic properties of essential oils. It promotes relaxation, harmony and balance. The plant-based essential oils are chosen for their specific properties and actions on the body. Aromatherapy massage is especially useful for recovery following an illness, for postnatal depression, PMT, arthritic and rheumatic pain, sleep disorders, headaches, and many other conditions. Individual blends of essential oils are created specifically for you; their therapeutic properties absorbing into the skin as the tension in your muscles melt away.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
Day after day, we dump toxins into our bodies: we eat badly, we live in cities full of pollution, we drink too much alcohol, eat too much sugar and our lifestyles are unforgiving and unhealthy. Lymphatic drainage massage is a therapeutic massage treatment that uses very light pressure and long gentle, rhythmic strokes to increase lymphatic flow, refreshing your immune system and flushing out toxins.
Because lymph is so important to keeping your immune system working properly, improving its flow & drainage around the body is good for you in lots of ways. Lymphatic drainage massage can have a powerful effect on your general health; it can help your body fight infection & speed up healing & recovery from illness, it is a popular & effective treatment for cellulite; it reduces water retention & can boost weight loss. It can improve your skin texture by: reducing swelling, puffiness & blotches, giving you clean healthy pores & speed up healing in scar tissue, so it can, for example, improve the appearance of stretch marks.
Dry Needling
Dry Needling is a cost effective and efficient technique for the treatment of myofacial pain, injury and chronic muscular dysfunction. The approach is based on western anatomical and neuro-physiological principals, not to be confused with the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) technique of acupuncture.
Dry Needling refers to the insertion of fine, solid filament needles into tight bands of muscle, tender ligaments and thickened tendons, usually in or around Myofascial Trigger Points. Myofascial trigger points have been described as a “hyper-irritable spot within a skeletal muscle”. Myofascial trigger points are points in muscles which are painful when pushed. Dry needling of the ‘shortened’ muscle band causes an immediate relaxation, a sense of release and increased range of motion is often experienced.
Dry needling is incorporated within the massage treatment.
How does a Dry Needling Treatment feel?
You will find that not every area needled will elicite the same sensation. In some areas you might feel a slight pricking sensation when the needle first touches the skin. As the needle is inserted deeper into the muscle, as a general guide, it is expected that relaxed tissue in a normal functioning state will be painless. When the needle contacts a trigger point some people feel the muscle “twitch” this is the “local twitch response”. Others may feel a deep aching or burning sensation or it may feel like the muscle has tightened or “cramped”. Referred pain is another common phenomena, as every trigger point has a common referral zone, often quite distance to the actual trigger point. If a strong referral sensation occurs don’t panic, this is a good sign that the needle is doing its job. If the sensation you get reproduces part or all of your symptoms, this can mean that an active trigger point is very likely the cause of your symptoms. Remember the aim of Dry Needling is to insert the needle into a trigger point, so the intention is to stimulate a response. In many cases, while the sensation is quite different, it is less unpleasant than some deep tissue remedial treatment you may have experienced.
