About Us

Max started tattooing at Paddington with Alex in 1960. They worked together until Alex retired in 1972.
Max moved to 46 Llankelly Place in 1978, where he shared a studio with Big Pete Blackwell, trading as Pete and Max’s Village Tattoo. When Big Pete retired in 1990, Max continued as Max’s Village Tattoo.

Max chater

As a kid, Max worked in his father’s (Alex “Painless” Chater) studio, and began tattooing 1959.
He started at Paddington and, after Alex retired, moved to Shop 46 Lankelly Place Kings Cross in 1978. In 2005 the store moved around the corner to its present location on Darlinghurst Road. Max has won numerous awards and accolades – “Too many to mention,” he says.
