It seems incredible to believe but Microdermabrasion has existed for nearly 30 years! It was developed in 1985 and the procedure originally used tiny particles (crystals) to remove the top (dead) layer of the skin and vacuum the particles and dead skin away.
There are currently over 100 different microdermabrasion machines available. The machines use different forms of exfoliation such as a diamond bur or different types of crystals. The device is designed to act as a gentle abrasive which removes the surface layers of “dead” skin. By removing the top layers the skin is left feeling smooth and clean. The microdermabrasion treatment also stimulates the blood flow to the skin and this improves skin nutrition and repair. The production of elastin and collagen in the skin is stimulated. Microdermabrasion before and after photos show healthier skin and a glowing complexion.
Microdermabrasion with crystals
There are several types of crystals used but the most common are micro-corundum crystals or aluminium oxide crystals. These crystals are preferred because they are not absorbed by the skin.
Other crystals used are sodium chloride crystals, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda crystals) and magnesium oxide crystals.
In general, the use of crystals is not the preferred method due to the risk of leaving scratch marks and the increased risk of hyperpigmentation and, sometimes, even infection.
