Tips for Choosing a Your Child’s New Hat

There are several factors to consider when choosing a sun protective hat, including:

The fabric – choose a hat made from tight fabric. The tighter the structure of the fabric thebetter the protection it offers from the sun.
UPF label – check the UPF label rating to determine the level of protection of the hat. A higher number means better protection e.g. UPF 50 offers better protection than UPF 15.
Practicality – the hat should be suitable to your activities e.g. it shouldn’t keep falling off
Should be affordable
Should be safe to use
Should provide adequate ventilation – this is especially important for those involved in outdoor physical activity in warm weather.
Protective Sun Hats

Research has shown that prolonged exposure to strong UV rays from the sun can cause cancer. It is therefore important to protect your skin from exposure. This doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy spending time outdoors during the sunny summer days. You simply need to protect your skin from prolonged direct exposure to UV rays.

During sunny days when the UV index is above 3, it is especially important to take precautionary measures. UV rays are most intense in the middle part of the day. SunSmart UV Alert provides more information on specific times of the day when protection from the sun is important. You can check UV index levels online and at sunsmart.com.au. SunSmart suggests that you:

Wear clothing covering the skin to protect it from prolonged exposure
Use a broad spectrum SPF30+ sunscreen that is water-resistant. This should be reapplied every two hours
Sit in the shade
Wear sunglasses that are up to standard
Wear a protective hat
Protective hats such as bucket hats, broad-brimmed hats and legionnaire hats are the best sun protective hats. These hats offer wide brims that cover the back of the neck, ears, eyes and the face. This is much unlike baseball caps and other hats that provide minimal protection for the ears and the back of the neck.

Types of Hats

Are you wondering what type of hat will offer you sun protection? The hat you purchase should protect:

The back of the neck
The eyes
The face
The ears
Any hat that does not offer protection for all four of the areas mentioned above should not be considered a sun protective hat.

Bucket Hats

Also known as surfer styled hats
Brim of the hats is not less than 6cm providing protection for eyes, neck, face and ears
Crown is deep and low on the head
Broad Brimmed Hats

Brim is not less than 7.5cm wide providing protection for the eyes, back of the neck, face and ears
Legionnaire Hats

Have a flap that stretches out over the back of the neck and two side flaps, on either side of the head that cover the ears and side of the face.
Suitable for active people
Buying Hats for Toddlers and Babies

When buying a hat for a baby or toddler consider a hat that:

Fits correctly – choose a hat that can be adjusted to fit the head e.g. those with a place strap
Is comfortable
Provides adequate shade
Does not obstruct their hearing or vision
Choose a soft fabric
Ensure that the hat has a safety snap to prevent it from becoming a choking hazard
Anyone who’s ever taken care of a young child will tell you that they don’t like to wear hats. However, you need to be persistent as it is important for their protection. It will take time for them to get used to wearing a hat whenever they go outside.

Soft legionnaire hats are more suitable when it comes to baby sun protective hats. The soft fabric will fold easily when the baby puts their head down.

Accessories

Accessories for sun protection for those required to wear hard hats or helmets are available. These include attachments with broad brims as well as legionnaire-style flaps. These are perfect for cyclists and others who wear helmets that offer little sun protection.

The label was created because Aussie Mum (Kim) was having trouble finding good quality cotton clothes with age appropriate prints.  Our clothing is designed for everyday wear with fun colours and designs. Our clothes are also designed for the Australian climate and lifestyle. We ensure the items are practical, a full waist drawstrings all our shorts, shirts and pants.

At MikyB:-) most of our items are printed with each design when an order is received. This allows us to custom make our clothes. If there is a design and apparel combination not featured on our site, please feel free to contact us to see if the size, colour & design combination is available. Most items are also available without prints if required.

We also specialise in sourcing a great range of baby & kids sun hats and long sleeve rashies. We have long sleeve rashie styles and sizes for newborns up to 10 years.

Another great thing about MikyB is that we have stock all year round. There is nothing worse that not being able to get sun hats in the cooler seasons!.

The Couee Community Foundation was started by the same team that began Swim4kids in 2007 and has raised over $1,000,000 and donated over $500,000 for the children at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane.

The Couee Community charity was set up to help others, individuals, social service groups, communities, schools, and other nonprofits that might slip through the cracks and not qualify for assistance or funding through mainstream channels.

With a drive to do more for the community, Couee Community will be planning multiple fundraising events and projects in the future. Each event or project will have a particular focus on needs within the community.

Couee Community exists to improve the lives of persons and communities in needs or experiencing disability or disadvantage by providing funds to access services, programs, receive goods, or other benefit that alleviates any disadvantage. Fundraising Programs
MikyB:-) offers a fundraising program to assist organisations within the community with their fund raising activities. From sporting clubs to mothers groups, we can help your run a great fundraising campaign.

Our program usually forwards 15% of total sales back to the agreed organisation. Other arrangements can be made, such as a flat rate per item. The campaign will run for a set period of time, where participants purchase via the website using a unique Coupon Code. At the end of the campaign period the agreed proceeds are forwarded to the organisation.

MikyB:-) can provide you with promotional materials for your campaign. We have printed A5 flyers for manual distribution or a PDF flyer for electronic distribution. We can also run your email campaign if you provide us with the relevant email list.

Sizing & Care
Hat Sizing
Each child’s head is a little different in size and shape. Therefore the age suggestions for our hats are a guide only. We recommend that you measure the circumference of your child’s head and base your size selection on that measurement.

Clothing & Rashie Sizing
MikyB:-) does not have a set size/measurement chart for its clothing and rashies range,  as each garment is a little different. We aim that our sizes correspond to the age of a child of average weight & height. Our sizes are tested on my and other kids, plus against major brand items.

The majority of our boys & girls shorts, plus girls skorts & skirts have full waist draw stings. So if your child is taller than average, you can go up a size in these items and have them still fit around the waist.

Washing Rash Shirts
Our rash shirts are machine washable with no fabric softener. However the shirts will usually only require a rinse in cold water.

Washing Garments
We recommend that all items are washed for the first time with like colours in cold water – do not soak and line dry immediately.

Ironing Garments
Do not iron directly over prints. Always iron printed areas on the reverse side, or front side with a tea towel protecting the print.

We send most of our items within Australia via Australia Post regular post satchels, some hat orders are posted in boxes. Orders are usually shipped within 2 business days of receiving an order and full payment. Express orders are usually posted within 2 business day.

We charge a flat rates for shipping regardless of how much you purchase. We offer:

REGULAR POST – $8.00 (Delivery takes between 1-6 working day).

EXPRESS POST – $12.00 (Delivery takes 1-2 days depending on destination).

Delivery/Shipping Delays
If we are aware of any delays in the processing or shipping of your offer we will advise you as soon as possible by email or telephone.

Items Out Of Stock
We take great care to keep our website up to date with the availability of all our items. If however an item ordered is out of stock, we will advise the customer immediately. The customer will be given the the option to wait for the item, select another another of equal value or receive a refund for the item.

Refund & Exchange Policy
MikyB:-) will exchange/refund any item(s) that you have purchased online if the item(s) is not what you ordered, if an item(s) is not the size ordered, or if an item(s) is faulty. The item(s) must not have been worn and a copy your packing slip must be returned with the item(s) as proof of purchase. MikyB:-) will cover all postage costs. Please email us prior returning your goods to confirm the exchange/refund.

MikyB:-) will not refund goods outright simply because a customer changes their mind. We are however more than happy arrange an exchange or store credit. Customers are liable for postage costs incurred returning items and the sending new items. The item(s) must not have been worn and a copy your packing slip must be returned with the item(s) as proof of purchase. Exchange for a difference size is also acceptable. Please email us prior returning your goods to confirm the exchange.
