Maurizio M Bottaro
Remedial Mass Massage Therapist
( since 1994 )
Hi, I’m Maurizio M Bottaro. A little about myself and how I got into massage therapy; I’ve participated in a variety of sporting activities from the age of 11 until now. At the age of 24 during an Aussie rules football game I damaged my right knee, cartilages and ligaments. After that first operation I started seeing therapists such as physiotherapists and chiropractors, as my scoliosis slowly increased due to the fact that the surgeon had only repaired the cartilage and not the ligament, also I believe because I wasn’t receiving enough muscular release. At the age of 28, when I came to Sydney in 1987 from Melbourne, I was lucky enough to be sent to an osteopath by the name of David Vivian Jones who, for the first time in many years, helped my body feel normal and started giving me an understanding of what the body goes through and why. He then sent me to have my knee repaired properly by Dr. Mervin Cross in 1992. My interests and need regarding rehabilitation and massage therapy grew, so I went to Nature Care College and completed a diploma of remedial massage with other electives being Swedish massage, Chinese massage, sports medicine and some lymphatic massage in 1993. In 1994 I started working for David Vivian Jones two days a week and continued assisting him in around 18,000 massages until 2001 . In those eight years my knowledge of the human body and my clinical experience became immense and in 2001 I opened my own clinic in Woollahra. After living in the Eastern suburbs for 27 years and massaging there for 21 years, I’ve moved both my home and clinic to the inner West of Leichhardt. With approximately another 5,000 massages I’ve performed over the years on top of the ones for the osteopath, I’m now more experienced than ever and I still enjoy helping to take pain away from people with my hands, assisting them to a level of homeostasis by using all the techniques I’ve learnt in Muscular Skeletal Corrective Therapy.

Remedial Massage
Remedial Massage is used to target specific areas of muscle tightness and fatigue. The techniques used in Remedial Massage penetrate the deeper layers of muscle tissue, where areas of tightness and scar tissue can be released. The intensity of treatments allows chronic muscular conditions such as lower back pain and stiff neck and shoulders to be greatly relieved.
Remedial massage can assist in ensuring the body is able to function at its optimum level, free of what can be debilitating muscular pain caused by day-to-day activities.
Swedish Massage
Swedish massage is a technique that is the basis of all Western forms of massage treatment. It can help maintain muscles in an optimum state of nutrition, flexibility and vitality whilst relieving muscle tightness and stiffness that may restrict full movement. The techniques used in Swedish massage are designed to have a relaxing effect. It is a rhythmic and fairly superficial style and while the muscles are not worked too vigorously, great benefits to the body can still be felt. Swedish massage can relieve fatigue, reduce tension, calm the nervous system and promote relaxation to give you a sense of renewed energy.
Stimulated circulation of both blood and lymph may be achieved through Swedish massage. The increased blood circulation to the skin and muscles delivers vital nutrients, helping the skin and muscles to maintain optimum health.
Deep/Soft Tissue Massage
Deep/Soft Tissue Massage provides a sound foundation for good health by aiming to realign body segments whilst releasing chronic tension and muscular stress. It is a very different style of bodywork when compared with the more recognizable Remedial massage. Deep/Soft Tissue massage rejuvenates and reshapes the connective tissue that surrounds the muscles whilst Remedial massage concentrates on relieving the stresses within the muscles.
The process of the Deep/Soft Tissue Massage aims to restructure the muscular system by re-positioning muscles, tendons and ligaments that may have become bunched and shortened. By realigning the body, habitual patterns of tension and stress accumulated by today’s lifestyle may be released. In addition to improved posture, other benefits include pain relief, increased energy and an improved sense of relaxation and wellbeing.
I refer to soft tissue because there is nothing in the body that is actually called deep tissue, whereas soft tissue, in its correct anatomical term, is what needs to be released to help the skeletal system function correctly.
Sports Massage
Sports massage incorporates deep tissue work and muscle stretching to enhance athletic performance and helps to prevent new or reoccurring injuries. Massage improves circulation, which speeds up the removal of waste products that can cause muscular soreness. It brings oxygen and nutrients to the muscles to aid in repair and regeneration.
The objective of Sports Massage is to assist in returning the athlete to their sport in the best possible condition, in the shortest possible time. Whether the injury is recent or a long standing problem, massage can help in rehabilitation to reduce the time for maximum recovery.
Chinese Massage
In the teachings of Chinese massage (tui na), that I’ve studied, what was always referred to was the ‘Dragon energy’ which is a dual energy that runs through our bodies, the quick and easy explanation of this would be our lymphatic system and our central nervous system that run from our chest area to feed the whole of the body right through to our peripheries (finger & toes) in these teachings it’s also believed that the body is masculine and feminine all over so if there is conflict between the two simply gently-ish move them apart and recreate a pathway for the Dragon energy to flow.
