WHY AM I LOSING MY HAIR?
Hair loss can be caused by many factors. Physical health, stress, diet, genetics, hormones, treatments and medications can all contribute to your hair thinning or falling out.
In order to understand what treatments may be effective, you need to understand the difference between hair thinning vs hair loss.
If you have ruled out hair thinning, then look at the types of hair loss for both women and men.
All treatment options in the market are designed to treat specific types of hair loss and there is no one size fits all solution.
HAIR THINNING VS HAIR LOSS
Everyone experiences hair fall. Overall, you can expect to lose 50-300 hair follicles on a daily basis. This is the normal amount of hair a healthy scalp will shed. Depending on the colour or length of your hair, it may appear that you are shedding more than you really are.
If you are not losing your hair, the same number of hairs will grow to replace the hair fall.
If you are losing your hair, and are noticing more than just a few strands of hair falling out while shampooing or brushing, you should as a first step take the time to go see someone such as a doctor, trichologist or a qualified hairdresser.
Thinning hair is not fine hair, and, like hair loss there can be many factors that contribute to a change in your hair. Some of the common factors include stress, diet, colouring treatments, hormones and / or medications.
CAN I PREVENT LOSING MY HAIR?
You can protect hair from damage that may eventually cause thinning. Many people put added stress on their hair by using hair dryers, hot irons and / or dyes & colours. By using these frequently it may lead to dry, brittle and thinning hair.
- To prevent hair damage that may cause hair loss, here are some tips to follow.
- Go natural, leave your hair its natural color and texture. If that is not an option for you, give your hair time to recover from chemical treatments. For females you may want to look into using a hair rebuilding treatment.
- Choose products wisely. Use paraben, silicone, SLS & DEA free shampoo.
- When curling your hair, choose softer sponge rollers.
- Brush using a natural-bristle brush, which is less likely to tear your hair. Be gentle, and avoid brushing your hair when wet, as it is especially fragile at this time. It is best to use a comb on wet hair with conditioner or a treatment.
If hair loss runs in the family and you are already noticing a significant change in your hair then you may need to start using a more specific treatment option.
FEMALE HAIR LOSS
There is generally only one early sign of female hair loss and that is thinning hair. Generally, females do not experience a receding hair line and rarely will a woman go bald. Female Hair loss involves the thinning of hair in general. This occurs all over the scalp but mainly at the crown. Hair Loss in women can be caused by many factors but more specific considerations for females are hormonal stages, pregnancy and stress.
Below are some of the common causes of female hair loss.
ANDROGENETIC ALOPECIA
The majority of female with Androgenetic Alopecia have diffuse thinning on all areas of the scalp.
Androgenic alopecia can be caused by a variety of factors tied to the actions of hormones, including, ovarian cysts, the taking of high androgen index birth control pills, pregnancy, and menopause.
TELOGEN EFFLUVIUM
When your body goes through something traumatic like childbirth, malnutrition, a severe infection, major surgery, or extreme stress, much of the 90 percent or so of the hair in the anagen (growing) phase or catagen (resting) phase can shift all at once into the shedding (telogen) phase. About 6 weeks to three month after the stressful event is usually when the phenomenon called telogen effluvium can begin.
TRACTION ALOPECIA
This condition is caused by localized trauma to the hair follicles from tight hairstyles that pull at hair over time. If the condition is detected early enough, the hair will regrow. Braiding, cornrows, tight ponytails, and extensions are the most common styling causes.
ANAGEN EFFLUVIUM
Occurs after any insult to the hair follicle that impairs its mitotic or metabolic activity. This hair loss is commonly associated with chemotherapy. The characteristic finding in anagen effluvium is the tapered fracture of the hair shafts. The hair shaft narrows as a result of damage to the matrix. Eventually, the shaft fractures at the site of narrowing and causes the loss of hair.
HOW CAN I IDENTIFY WHICH IS THE RIGHT TREATMENT?

MALE HAIR LOSS
Hair loss in men can be a temporary or permanent. Temporary hair loss can be easy to fix when its causes is identified and dealt with. Hair loss that could possibly have been temporary, may become long lasting as a result in incorrect diagnosis. mHm will help you identify the causes of your hair loss and lead you to the right products/treatments for your particular kind of hair loss.
MALE PATTERN BALDNESS
Androgenetic Alopecia or common male pattern baldness s responsible for the vast majority of hair loss in men. While there are many possible reasons people lose their hair, including serious disease, reaction to certain medications, and in rare cases extremely stressful events, most hair loss in men can be blamed on heredity.
Male pattern baldness sufferers are inheriting hair follicles with a genetic sensitivity to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Hair follicles that are sensitive to DHT begin to miniaturize, shortening the lifespan of each hair follicle affected. Eventually, these affected follicles stop producing hair.
Male pattern baldness is generally characterized with the onset of a receding hairline and thinning crown.
The first is the Vertex Pattern, where initial hair loss appears in the temporal areas of the front hairline with simultaneous hair loss occurring in in crown region on the top of the head. Eventually hair loss encompasses the entire scalp region of the head. The speed at which this occurs or when it starts comes down to individual variations.
The second pattern is the Anterior Pattern, where initial hair loss appears in the temporal areas of the front hairline and then progresses rearwards towards the crown until hair loss encompasses the entire scalp region.
my HAIR matters offers many different treatment options to treat.
