Acupuncture

Acupuncture originated in China where it has been used effectively as a form of medicine and healing for over 3,000 years. The purpose of acupuncture treatment is to achieve physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health by regulating the flow of Qi (pronounced ‘Chi’) in the body. Qi is the energy or life force that permeates all living things.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), when the normal flow of Qi is blocked or disrupted (such as by stress, injury or unhealthy habits), the body’s ability to heal itself can be affected. The TCM practitioner seeks to restore balance by inserting fine, sterile needles into carefully selected acupuncture points. There are more than 2000 acupuncture points in total. They connect with channels in the body, commonly referred to as meridians.

Acupuncture can be used successfully with other treatment methods, including herbal medicine, moxibustion, cupping and massage, to further increase their effectiveness.

The popularity of acupuncture has grown world-wide as more people are discovering its significant health benefits. The World Health Organisation has indicated that acupuncture can be used to treat a wide range of conditions, from respiratory diseases and eye disorders, to gastrointestinal disorders, neurologic disorders and disorders of the mouth cavity, just to name a few. For more information on conditions that can be treated using acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, see Conditions Treated.

Acupuncture has been found to:

– provide drug-free relief from pain
– be effective in treating a wide range of acute and chronic conditions
– offer a holistic approach to health care
– help prevent disease and illness while maintaining general health and wellbeing.

Remedial Massage

Remedial Massage has many benefits, such as reducing stress and fatigue; improving circulation, skin and muscle tone; improving energy levels; and increasing flexibility and range of motion. Remedial massage has also been found to relieve eye strain; reduce blood pressure; improve posture; hasten recovery from injury; reduce cravings; slow the ageing process; and promote relaxation.

Chinese Massage (Tui Na)

Chinese Massage (Tui Na) works on similar principles to acupuncture and other forms of Traditional Chinese Medicine in that it aims to achieve a harmonious flow of Qi (energy) through the body’s meridians, enabling the body to heal itself naturally. In a typical session, the client will wear loose clothing and no shoes and lie on a massage table or mat. The Tui Na practitioner will apply a range of massage techniques, focusing on specific acupressure points, muscles, joints and meridians. Herbs can also be used during massage treatment to promote faster healing. Depending on the treatment required, a session can last from 30 minutes to 1 hour. Most people report feeling more relaxed and energised after a Tui Na session..

Reflexology

Reflexology uses reflex areas on the hands and feet to affect other areas of the body, including internal organs. Experienced reflexologists are often able to observe which parts of the body have congestion or tension by feeling corresponding zones on the feet. Practitioners use specialised massage techniques on the feet (and/or hands) to relieve tension in all areas of the body.

Reflexology can effectively reduce stress and help with relaxation. Reflexology can also be effective in helping a wide range of conditions, including back pain, migraine, infertility, arthritis, sleep disorders, hormonal imbalances, digestive disorders, sports injury, and stress. A professionally trained reflexologist is able to detect subtle changes in specific points on the foot and can tailor a session to meet your individual health goals. Typically, sessions last from 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese Herbal Medicine can be used alone or in conjunction with other forms of treatment to increase their effectiveness. Herbal medicine may be in the form of raw herbs (that require boiling), or pills or powders. Your herbalist will be able to tell you the best way to take the herbs for optimal effectiveness. Chinese herbalism uses the laws of Yin and Yang and all herbs are categorised according to the yin and yang characteristics. The herbalist determines the appropriate balance of yin and yang herbs for an individual. A person with yin deficiency may be given specific yin herbs to balance their health, while a person with signs of yang deficiency may need more yang herbs. Chinese herbal medicine can be used successfully to treat colds, asthma, bronchitis, skin disorders, infertility, PMT, stress, anxiety, depression, disgestive disorders, diarrhoea, allergies, cardiovascular disorders, back pain, sports injuries, autoimmunie disorders, arthritis, sore neck, frozen shoulder, migraine, insomnia and chronic fatigue. It can also help in the treatment of ailments relating to the ear, nose, throat, mouth and eyes; assist with some forms of paralysis; and aid stress management and weight control.

Tai Chi & Qi Gong

Tai Chi and Qi Gong are gentle, graceful and balanced exercises that involve stretching, natural breathing, relaxation and meditative postures. Tai Chi can be a suitable form of exercise for people of all ages. The exercises, practised regularly, help to balance and regulate the body’s internal energy (Qi) and promote relaxation, and mental, physical and emotional health and wellbeing.
