“The whole thing was over pretty quick – he clamped me, got the needle in place and told me I’d feel a little “bite”, then the jewellery was in, and I was apparently a “trooper” I would have said thanks but, well…you know.

Then it was aftercare and question time, and I was sent off to 7-11 to get a slurpee.”

Nostril Stud Aftercare Advice

Clean the piercing twice a day, every day. Soak a cotton tip in (1/4 tsp Sea salt in 30mL Boiled water ‘cooled’) and remove any crusting.

Be careful not to pull the stud out.

Remove any dry blood crusting on the inside of nose. Rinse with fresh water and dry completely.

Wash piercing daily with antibacterial soap and dry thoroughly.

DO NOT use creams or ointments as they can keep the wound moist and will hamper healing.

DO NOT remove jewellery during the healing phase. Afetr healing period, DO NOT remove jewellery for more than 1 dayfor the first 6 months.

DO NOT get make-up, cleansers, sun tan lotions, etc. directly on the piercing. When using hairspray, cover the piercing with your hand.

HEALING TIME IS APPROXIMATELY 8-10 WEEKS.

Nostril Ring Aftercare Advice:

Follow all the same instructions as above, although while cleaning take the cotton tip and rub off all the dry matter on ring. This matter os called ‘Plasma’. Once piercing has healed enough to rotate through the hole (usually a few days) thoroughly clean ring repeatedly while rotating it through the piercing.

TIP: Watch your piercing while undressing (specifically jumpers) and try your best not to sleep on it!

Tounge Aftercare:

Rinse your mouth with a mouthwash containing no alcohol if possible. Use a 50/50 mouthwash and water solution after eating or smoking for 14 days.

Wait a minimum of 10 days before attempting to change over to a shorter stem. If you do so before that period your tongue may swell up all over again.

Remove plaque which can form on the jewellery. Remove this gently with a soft toothbrush during the healing period. After the piercing is healed use an anti plaque mouthwash. Then you may remove the jewellery once a month to clean it.

Check the jewellery once a day to make sure the balls are tight, wash hands BEFORE handling jewellery.

Be careful when you first start eating solid foods. Take very small bites, keeping your tongue level in your mouth so that the jewellery does not hit your teeth.

DO NOT hit the barbell against your teeth, you may shatter a tooth by doing this. This will become less of a problem when you graduate to a shorter barbell.

Keep cold water in the fridge. Adds lots of ice making it really cold drink this when you first wake up in the morning. The swelling will be worse than usual because when you lie down more blood goes to your head. Sip the iced water very slowly, this will help alleviate swelling.

Eat lots of cold foods and ice to help control swelling.

DO NOT talk to much when you have the first(longer) barbell in

DO NOT eat ant hot or spicy foods. This can be painful during the healing phase.

DO NOT put anything dirty in your mouth, such as fingernails, ink pens, etc.. You must refrain from oral sex for the first 10-14 days, this includes kissing.

DO NOT play or bite on the jewellery.

DO NOT remove or replace the jewellery during the healing period. The hole closes very quickly and it is painful to reinsert the jewelry if it does.

DO use Gly-Oxide (ORAL PEROXIDE) 3 times a day.

Basic tips and info about the aftercare of lip piercing:

Avoid eating, smoking and drinking within the first three hours of the piercing.

Clean the piercing well after anytime you smoke, drink or eat for the entire healing period.

Wash your hands or wear disposable gloves any time you are going to touch the piercing.

Saline soak your piercing twice a day.

In the case of swelling Benzydamine can be obtained from any Pharmacy ask for

”Difflam-C Anti-inflammatory Antiseptic Solution”

Use a new soft-bristled toothbrush and always keep it clean.

You should brush twice a day to remove food particles that could get into the wound and cause an infection.

Avoid oral sex till the wound is completely healed.

Rinse your mouth with a mouthwash after meals or eating. For the first 2 weeks you should suck on antibacterial/anti-inflammatory throat lozenges (Difflam-C), these reduce the chance of infection and reduce swelling. Ibuprofen will help keep the swelling and tenderness to a

minimum, and can be taken when needed for pain. Avoid sharing plates, cups, and eating utensils.

Eat things such as frozen yogurt, ice cream, cold foods, or suck on chipped or crushed ice, or very small ice blocks for the first 2 weeks.

Cold things help the healing, alleviate pain and reduce swelling.

Dry with disposable paper products such as gauze or tissues, because cloth towels can harbor bacteria and catch on new piercing causing injury.

Avoid submerging in bodies of water such as lakes, pools, etc.

Donít remove or replace the jewellery during the healing period, as the hole closes up very quickly and itís painful to reinsert the jewellery once this happens. If it becomes necessary for you to remove the piercing, then the best thing to do is to go to your piercer to have it taken out.

How to Keep the Pierced Area Clean:

Wash your hands thoroughly before cleaning the area. Gently and completely cleanse the area with antibacterial soap and water first. Using a, cotton ball or tissue, gently remove any debris have formed around the piercing. This should be done twice a day.

How to Keep Your Lip Piercing Jewelry Clean:

Your jewellery can also carry harmful bacteria and needs to be cleaned properly. Massage the piercing with your fingers thoroughly and rinse completely with warm water.

Turn the piercing carefully up and down. Avoid cleaning piercing incision with alcohol or peroxide. This could harm or kill the tissue that needs to heal.

Simply use an antibacterial soap with warm water.

Nipple Piercing Healing and Aftercare:

For those who choose to have their nipples pierced, healing times run between three and six months for most men, and six to twelve months for most women. This is a major piercing, considered a deep tissue wound technically.

The piercing heals from the outer edges back towards the center and can often take a long time to become comfortably established. Women experience longer healing times as their piercings are often through more body tissue and their breast tissue changes with hormonal functions.

Nipple piercings are through erectile tissue. They get better blood supply than a navel piercing but are subject to more body movement and rubbing with clothing than an ear piercing. Nipple piercings can initially be tender for a few days or a few weeks depending on the individual. Increasing redness, swelling and tenderness usually signal some form of infection. Donít be afraid to contact your piercer if you think you are having a healing issue.

New jewellery should be surgical stainless steel or 14k or 18k gold. See what your piercer recommends as far as starting diameter.

You cannot wear sterling silver in nipple piercings, and it is recommend to save niobium and titanium for established piercings.

For washing, use a natural soap without dyes, perfumes or heavy anti-bacterials. These can all irritate the new piercing,

as can over-cleaning the piercing. Some people find that soaking the fresh piercing with hot salt water is suitable.

Clean any dried lymph fluids from the edges of the healing piercings for comfort.

Piercings heal from the outside in, so what your nipples are doing is growing a tunnel from the two sides of the nipple to surround the new jewelry. The surfaces can look healed whereas the inside areas might not be healed totally together, so donít rush to change into new jewelry for the first year. You will also want to avoid hot tubs or pools as the chemicals in the water can irritate and inflame healing piercings. Use laundry products without dyes or scent additives while the nipple piercings are still healing to avoid reactions.

Aftercare advise and tips for female Genital Piercings.

NEVER touch your piercing with dirty hands. Wash hands immediately before touching or cleaning your piercing every time.

The best place to clean your piercing is in the shower. Allow clean water to run over and saturate the piercing before you begin to wash it. This will help to soften and wash away some of the dry, crusted discharge from around and on the jewelry.

Remove the rest before washing with a wet cotton ball.

For at least the first week or two, take showers instead of baths. Sitting in a bath tub could introduce bacteria or harsh soaps to your genital area, causing irritation or infection. A soap product is not necessary for most – you don’t want to kill the healthy bacteria that live in the genital region.

A simple sea salt or saline solution wash twice a day (and after sex or

masturbation) is sufficient unless you start having a problem. If you feel you need to cleanse the area more thoroughly, use a mild liquid anti-microbial soap (like Provon or Satin – ask your piercer about availability of similar products) and clean the piercing by applying a tiny drop of soap to piercing and jewelry. Then thoroughly rinse by applying clean water.

Pat (do not rub) piercing dry with a clean, dry paper towel or similar paper product. Do NOT use washcloth or towel, as these are breeding grounds for bacteria.

Thoroughly clean piercing once a day for the duration of the estimated healing time for your particular piercing. Remember, this is an initial healing period only. Your piercing will not be completely healed until many weeks after the initial healing time is over.

DO NOT use any ointments, creams, or astringents on your new piercing.

DO NOT allow your piercing to come in contact with any bodily fluids for the first few weeks while it is healing. This includes saliva as well as semen. So, you are not restricted from sexual activity, but a condom or dental guard must be used for any and all sexual contact, or you are putting yourself at risk for infection. This includes masturbation and/or the use of sex toys.

BE SURE that everything that touches your piercing is clean. This includes clothing and bedding as well as your hands.

If you experience itching or severe discomfort, you may be having a reaction to your laundry detergent. Switch to something without all the stain-removing

and bleaching agents.

Enjoy your new piercing! Take care of it, and take care of yourself.

School of Body Piercing

Why Pierce de Resistance?

Quite simply, PdR School of Body Piercing offers something that no other training facility can the opportunity to learn to pierce with qualified medical professionals. PdR trainers have many years experience in medical fields, guaranteeing an unparalleled level of quality, care and expertise in the practice of piercing.

What can I expect from PdR seminars?

A safe, hygienic and open environment. Flexibility in the seminar structure allowing for varying levels of experience and the particular interests of attendees. The opportunity to gain valuable practical experience at all skill levels under the direct supervision of senior PdR piercers. Expert guidance in the selection of appropriate piercing instruments, sterilisation equipment and jewellery. A comprehensive manual covering all the material contained within the seminar, with a complete set of revision questions and learning aids. A resource list of contacts and suppliers giving you all the benefit of PdR’s experience, an invaluable reference for the practice of piercing. Total back-up and support, both during and after completion of seminars, and continuing training and networking opportunities.

Will I receive formal accreditation?

It is important to know that there are no formal “schools” or accreditation processes to become a body piercer. Titles like “master piercer” are worth very little, partly because they are used so often and partly because they falsely imply some kind of qualification. Likewise, the fact that an establishment is “Health Department Approved” can mislead, since by law all piercing venues must gain this approval before they can open their doors for business. If you are interested in training as a piercer, know that piercing can’t be learnt in a matter of days, or even weeks. Completing even the most advanced seminars provides no guarantees, what counts is experience. At PdR we provide a safe, professional environment for you to gain experience.

You will also receive a certificate of attendance. Again, this is intended not as “proof” of your ability to pierce, but as a statement recognising your participation In the PdR seminars. However, those who know the high standards of the instruction provided by PdR’s medically qualified piercers will recognise the value of this certificate.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR A PIERCING?

Please consult with your doctor before you get a piercing. Eat about an hour before your appointment, and, by all means, NO alcohol or mind-altering drugs. Some people like to make an occasion of their piercing so feel free to bring a friend, to witness the event.

Does it hurt to be pierced?

Yes, but for less than a second, significantly less than most people anticipate. We are often told “that didn’t hurt nearly as much as I thought it would.” We are constantly refining our techniques to make the experience comfortable as humanly possible.

Can you numb the area to be pierced?

For a lot of reasons, the answer is NO! For one, only registered medical professionals can legally administer injectable anaesthetics. For another, when performed by skilled professional Piercer, the actual piercing is quicker and considerably less painful than the injection would be. An injection also distorts the tissue, which can result in a crooked or misshapen piercing. Topical anaesthetics penetrate deeply enough to provide any significant numbing.

Will it hurt after it’s healed?

The tenderness present with a new piercing usually diminishes rapidly during the healing period. Healed piercings often bring people a great deal of pleasure in addition to the aesthetic appeal.

How long does it take to heal?

Healing times vary from piercing to piercing and person to person and can be affected by the aftercare the piercing receives. Touching a healing piercing with dirty hands, contact with body fluids, rough treatment, and use of cleaning agents which are inappropriate or to which one is sensitive can cause problems and significantly lengthen healing time. Following our aftercare instructions closely, will minimize healing time and the risk of problems.

What are the chances of getting an infection?

If you’re pierced at Pierce de Resistance (PdR), and follow our aftercare instructions faithfully, the chances of an infection are virtually non-existent. We take extreme care to assure that all piercings are performed in a appropriately clean environment using sterile equipment. After that, it’s up to you. We will never discourage you from consulting your doctor if you believe you have an infection. If you’re not comfortable going to your usual doctor, we can often give you names of “piercing friendly” doctors. There are however, many conditions which are not infections, and may be mistaken as such. They include reaction to the metal or, more commonly, to the cleaning agents you’re using. If you want, we are happy to consult with you and suggest possible approaches based on our experience as professional Piercers. The percentage of people who contract infections in their piercings is extremely small, and these are usually the result of inappropriate aftercare practices.

When can I take the jewellery out and not lose the hole?

There are two stages to healing. The initial stage seals the piercing and thus reduces the chances of infection dramatically. The second stage is longer and is the time it takes for the piercing to “toughen up and season.” During and after the latter stage jewellery can be removed for varying lengths of time. The piercing will begin to shrink as soon as you remove the jewellery. How long it takes to shrink to the degree where you cannot re-insert the jewellery varies. Never force jewellery into a piercing which has shrunk. Obtain assistance from PdR where we will happily re-insert the jewellery for you.

Will I set off the metal detector?

Probably not unless you have a large concentration of piercings in one area of your body, or if your piercing jewellery is of a very thick gauge. Most airport security staff are now aware of the more common existence of personal piercing jewellery. If you are worried about setting off the detector, consult them discreetly before walking through the metal detector area.

How will exercise and sweat affect a new piercing?

For most people this does not cause problems. Riding a bicycle should be avoided with a guiche or fourchette piercing, as pressure and rubbing against any healing piercing causes irritation. While your own urine and sweat are sterile to your own body, it’s a very good idea to clean the piercing after your workout. Wearing clean, absorbent clothing with a minimum of dyes can be helpful.

What about swimming pools and beaches?

Pools, beaches, and natural bodies of water are teeming with potentially harmful organisms. For the first month of healing, the cell walls inside the piercing are simply not strong enough to defend your body against an invader. A product called Tegaderm, a waterproof bandage available at pharmacies, will provide a measure of protection. If you simply must go swimming in the first month of your healing period, schedule one of your two daily piercing cleanings for immediately after being in the water. Try to avoid chlorinated pools if your jewellery is gold as the chemical can cause it to discolor. Swimming at the beach can be less of a problem. It is advisable however to apply pevilane-iodine solution immediately after the activity.

Do navel piercings usually grow out?

Of the more usual piercings in susceptible clients, navels have a greater tendency to grow out than average. Placement has a lot to do with success, so you can increase your chances by having the piercing done by a skilled professional. Be sure to follow proper aftercare and minimize as much as possible the irritation caused by clothing which is tight or restrictive especially buckled belts, elastic waistbands and especially panty hose tops.

Besides PdR where can I get professionally pierced?

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people cashing in on the popularity of body piercing. These typically range from street corner kids with a dirty needle and flea market hustlers with an ear piercing gun to a handful of conscientious people with limited knowledge, skill, and experience. Don’t let your passion for piercing prevent you from doing careful research. Ask as many questions as you can, and be sure to get a guided tour of the piercing room and the sterilization area. If you can, speak to several of their customers, and try to see some of their work. Shopping for a good piercer is like looking for a good tattoo artist or hair stylist. A piercer flaunting a fancy title on their card, or claiming to be “certified” or “masters in body piercing” should be held up for special scrutiny, as there is currently no certification process for Piercers. If you are in doubt about your local “Piercers”, PdR offers “Pierce With A Pro” articles and videos for people who need more information or who think they might want to attempt their own piercings.

What about the more unusual piercing techniques?

As piercing becomes more and more common, some Piercers are seeking to distinguish themselves by offering “new” piercings, or using “new” techniques. While a very small number of these may indeed be legitimate advancements in the art of piercing, the vast majority of such offerings are either inappropriate, unsuccessful, or dangerous, possibly even fatal. When considering any piercing or technique which falls outside of the range of the common or traditional, both the piercer and the piercee should carefully consider the risks and possible consequences of their decisions, and when in doubt, stick to the tried and true.

Are the piercing needles used only on one person?

We absolutely never use a needle on more than one person. At PdR the needles are presterilized and are deliberately opened in front of the client prior to use and disposed of in a sharps container.

How many piercings can I get in one session?

Three piercings in one appointment is not uncommon. Having many more than that can be a bit too stressful for your body to cope with and can prolong your healing time.

Can I lose sensation in the pierced area?

For most people, a piercing increases sensation. That is one of the main reasons people get pierced i.e. to heighten the stimulation of a particular body part. The number of people who have reported no change or a loss of sensation is actually very small.

How does nipple piercing affect breast feeding?

Since the nipple secretes milk through a system of hundreds of ducts, which are not blocked by a nipple piercing, a healed piercing should not interfere with breast feeding. A piercing in the process of healing would be problematic, so we advise for a lactating mother to wait until having a nipple piercing. We strongly suggest that the mother remove her jewellery while feeding her baby.

What metals are safe for piercing jewellery?

316L surgical implant grade stainless steel, solid gold of either 9 or 18 carat, niobium, or titanium work well for the vast majority of people. Platinum and some other exotic metals also work well. Metals to avoid include silver, gold plated or gold filled, brass, bronze, and copper. The initial “savings” on a cheaper ring are quickly forgotten when infections and reactions to poorly made jewellery necessitate additional medical expenses.

What size jewellery is standard?

Usually a matter of individual custom fit, some piercings do have “standard” sizes which work for most people, and often there is a minimum size. The look is only part of what makes a piercing work for you. It must function properly as well. Jewellery which is not the right size can cause healing problems. Consult PdR for advice.

Why can’t I have a smaller ring?

Sometimes, what you imagine would look best will not work best. Your preferences in look aside, the size needs to be tailored to your body’s individual structure, and, most importantly, what will be the most comfortable and promote carefree healing.
