Being a modern day working mum, I know what it’s like at the end of the working week, sometimes the weekend can seem like another two work days for me, taking care of my home, my family, there is very little time left for rest. But I wouldn’t trade my world for anything, in fact, I often feel I am very lucky to have all the things I have. Of course, it was a long journey to get to where I am today, some highs, some lows, but overall journey to where I am today has been a wonderful one.

My name is Vanessa, I am the founder and General Manager of Rainbow Nails, and I live in Melbourne with my husband and two teenage daughters. We are a normal busy family, and I can honestly say my children’s lives are very different from my upbringing in Vietnam many years ago. I moved to Australia as a young girl from Vietnam in 1989 and I went to a Glen Waverley school to finish my education.

After graduation I started out working with my sister in a restaurant but soon realised that kind of work was not for me, so I secured a Manager’s position in a nail salon 1999 in Southland, but in 2000 I couldn’t resist the opportunity to start my own nail salon in Greensborough. That Greensborough Nail Salon is still going strong today. The Greensborough shop was small and at first it was just me and one other girl doing nails. Now the store has over five regular staff members.

Things were different when I started out in the nail business 13 years ago, for example I was the first nail salon in Greensborough when we started out back then, now there are six!

Things in Greensborough went from strength to strength, and when another opportunity presented itself in 2008, I jumped at the opportunity to open another nail salon in the Westfield Shopping Centre, where I am still based today. This salon now has over 14 staff, and two Managers. Not too much later, in late 2009, I secured another great shop in South Yarra, which still continues to grow with seven staff members working there now as well.

As the General Manager of all three stores my work varies from HR, stock management and sales and marketing. I love learning about new developments in the beauty industry, and keep up to date with trade fairs and the like. I work hard to ensure our nail shops have the best nail polish ranges available in Australia.

To be honest I remember dreaming of 0wning my own beauty shop when I was a little girl, and to this day I still can’t believe I am living my dream. But it has not all been a bed of roses, in fact nothing has been given to me, I have had to work to achieve my success, and I know many other business women have had similar journeys with their success, but the rewards of owning three nail and beauty salons is too many to list here.

“Have been going to your Broadmeadows store over one year. The staff have always been rude my sister stopped going because of the man you have there. He is so rude.
Went today and one person sitting in chair,my usual girl not in. After I sat down and picked shellac colour was told will be extra $5.00 because I have long nails. I asked why after 12 months with long nails. I’m not paying. You have $40.00 advertised and that’s what I’m paying. Then usual speak in own language between them. So rude. I told her I gave nails lifting. She did nothing about them just continued on her way. Was really rough and told her. Asked her 2 more times about my thumb nail lifting. I’m sure she has had no training because she had no idea. My nails are shocking I just wanted out. Will not be back you lost another customer.”

“I have gone to rainbow nails twice now. The first time I walked into to simply ask if they were able to do a design I wanted. After waiting 10 minutes to be acknowledged, the employee was simply so rude talking to me, like i had just inconvenienced them, so I simply walked out.
Today was my second time going into the salon, fresh start thinking maybe they were just having a bad day. I wanted fresh SNS nails done with a new design for the end of year. I asked the man who was originally serving me what nail designs they were able to do, he told me to wait. 5 minutes later, after beginning to prepare my nails, a lady swaps with him. I then ask her, with her response saying to show her a photo and she will do it. I showed her almost 15 different designs, each time with her saying she can’t do it.
I already had tips on from my previous SNS nails being done, and requested that she reshaped them as they needed to be done. The lady then makes my tips so short that they are almost the size of my actual nails! (Doesn’t that defeat the purpose?!) . Then on top of this she wanted to charge me with one of the nails i made her put a new tip on because it was actually shorter than my nail! No! The way her and the guy spoke to me today was so rude, I shall definitely not be going back ever again. I will also be letting my friends know that this place is not the place to get nails done at… I’m extremely annoyed.”

“I have been getting my nails here for a long time and reccomended a lot of other people however not even 1 week ago i come in and got sns on my real nails- The girl rushed them and i left with nails that were see through and extremely uneven and snapped within days to which i was pretty much told bad luck when i went back Safe to say i wont be returning!! Disgusting”

“Hi I went to rainbow nail salon because my sister’s wedding was two days after I went and got a manicure and pedicure Percy did the pedicure I sat down in the chair and the lady tried to turn on the message for me I said is it working and she was like no but in Broken English so she said oh well you can’t have a massage and I was thinking oh my god that is rude my sister and my mum and some other clients both had massage chairs which really wasn’t fair to me When they finished my manager I looked at that I looked at my nails and they did a very good job at painting my nails they use electric file on my nails when I have natural nails and I’m only 11 so I don’t get it next up was the pedicure when they did my pedicure those Stones things they burnt my feet and then I had a burn mark on my feet for about a month and it really hurt so I really give this place As disgusting one Thank you :-)”

“This place is a total ripoff. Was given a price for SNS and was then told it would be extra because my nails were long. You shouldn’t change the price after starting the job. Do not bother going there, staff are rude and arrogant. They have certainly lost my business.”
