Product care guide
Red Hill Couture takes great pride in making quality garments. To keep our clothes looking as good as new wash after wash, please follow our washing and care instructions. All garments maintain their pristine appearance longer if dry-cleaned.
Before washing or dry cleaned
Do
- Check washing instructions on the labels of your Red Hill Couture clothes.
- Check and empty pockets to avoid any nasty surprises.
- Do up buttons and zips to avoid chafing in the washing machine/dry cleaners.
- Turn garments inside out to maintain condition of motifs/colours.
- Protect underwear, light clothing and small items by placing them in wash bags.
Don’t
- Mix light and dark colours in the same wash as colours may run.
- Put washing powder in middle of your washing on a time delay cycle as colours may bleed.
- Overload your washing machine, as it will reduce rinsing efficiency.
- Use too much washing powder – traces may remain on your clothes when they are dry.
After washing
Do
- Hang your washing immediately so items keep their shape and ironing is easier.
- Keep your washing fresh by not leaving it in the machine too long before hanging it up.
- Flat dry your Red Hill Couture knits to keep their shape.
- Iron your clothes inside out.
- Always use a silk organza press cloth when ironing on the right side of fabric.
- Use the steam function when ironing more than ironing clothes.
Don’t
- Dry your coloured clothes in bright sunlight because they will fade.
- Iron embellishments, sequins, buttons, poppers, zips and elastic as they may get damaged in the process.
Laundry tips
- Use green washing powders and softeners.
- Air dry your washing whenever you can to avoid using a tumble-dryer.
- Use a low temperature setting for your washing (30 or 40°). You will cut the energy used by 25%.
- Wash a full load so you don’t waste water and electricity.
- Use short cycles if possible to cut down on energy usage.
- Use delicate wash cycle for all RHC washable clothes.
Care of your leather jackets/coats
Most leather jackets or coats are very durable. You can often extend the life of your daughter’s jacket and keep it looking new through years of use by applying leather protectors, regularly conditioning the exterior with oils or specially-formulated solutions, and spot cleaning the surface with a brush and a moist cloth to remove dust and other debris.
Have her jacket professionally cleaned once a year or so.
Garments that are not worn as often should typically be stored in a dry place away from sunlight to prevent fading or surface damage.
Hang it on a well-padded hanger when it is not in use.
Avoid using pegs or clips, as they will mark the leather.
Should the jacket get wet, hang it on a well-shaped hanger and allow it to dry at room temperature and away from any direct heat sources such as radiators or airing cupboards. If rain spots appear, you should be able to remove them with a dry cloth. You can use a damp cloth or some leather conditioner.
Leather coats left unworn for long periods can begin to lose shape, stuff your coat with acid free tissue paper. Be certain that the tissue paper is acid free. Never use newspaper or paper with ink as the ink may dye your coat or jacket. Not only will stuffing your coat keep the proper shape, but also it will protect your coat from dampness and mildew.
NEVER use plastic to cover your jacket/coat. (Plastic is a breeding ground for mold and mildew because it traps dampness). Use the bag that accompanied your purchase. The bag will allow your coat to breathe, yet still protect it from dust and dirt.
Store in a cool place. Leather fares best in cool temperatures. Coolness will also help limit mold or mildew from forming.
Care of your suede jackets/coats
Proper suede cleaning and storage techniques will keep the fabric from drying out or fading. If your suede coat needs cleaning and storage during the spring and summer, you will need a precise cleaning method to protect the napped leather and resist fading, odors or mildew during storage.
Clean your suede coat thoroughly before storing it.
Remove all stains from your suede coat.
Brush the surface of the coat with a suede brush with small short bristles.
Rub the brush gently against the grain of the fabric to clean surface dirt off the garment.
Dab a white cloth with vinegar to surface stains from tea or coffee.
Brush the suede coat with a suede brush to remove the soiled areas and vinegar residue completely. To lift flattened suede nap, apply steam from a kettle filled with boiling water.
Hang your suede coats far away from light bulbs in your closet or closet vents where air from a heating unit may escape. When exposed to high temperatures and heat, the leather will expand.
Cover your suede coat with breathable or cotton bag that accompanied the purchase.
Hang the suede coat on padded wooden hangers. A plastic or wire hanger is not sturdy enough to hold the weight of a medium or large-sized women’s suede coat during storage.
Place your coat in a dry, dark well-ventilated storage area in your home that remains at a constant temperature.
