In 1955 Harry Russell joined his father E. A .C. (Bill) Russell and his brother in running the Gembrook family business, Russell’s Hardware in the Hills and Gembrook Transport Service.

By 1958 the brothers were delivering gas cylinders across the Silvan, Croydon, Pakenham and Gembrook areas as agents for C. G. A. Porta-Gas, as Shell at this time promoted the use of heating oil for brand new domestic heating technology.

In 1959 Harry opened the Ferntree Gully location and became an agent for Thermal Traders, which allowed him to expand the family business to Belgrave.

In 1979 the Russell Family added a showroom at Ferntree Gully for gas appliances after natural gas pipes were extended to the Hills. The Belgrave showroom eventually shut and was replaced by a site in Boronia.

The company became agents of more gas companies, and after purchasing Lilydale Gasmart they merged the business with the Boronia location and relocated to Croydon.

The 1980’s also saw the Russells introduce cooling appliances to their range. The Ferntree Gully showroom continues to this day under the leadership of Ewen Russell, who in 1984 joined his father Harry to became Store Manager in 1993, representing Origin Energy Limited until they withdrew their public profile.

The agency under Ewen Russell and his staff operated Ferntree Gully and Croydon stores which were soon recognized as the best in Victoria for the service they provided.

They were awarded the following accolades: Gasmart Agent of the Year Inaugural Award 1995 -1996 1996 – 1997 1998 – 1999 2000 – 2001 Origin Energy Shop – Agent of the Year Excellence Award 2001 2002 2007 2008 In 1998, the business was transferred to Ewen Russell, who today remains its proprietor.
