the sfumato name
Sfumato – the name
Pronounced Sf-uh-mato, the name is Italian (meaning “shaded off”) and has it’s origins in art. It relates to the painting technique used by Leonardo Da Vinci on his Mona Lisa which allows gradual, almost imperceptible transitions of color from light to dark. But what does this have to do with us? Well, we’re not suggesting for a moment that our stylists posses the talent of Leonardo (and maybe they do) but we like to think of them as artistic stylists who do everything in their power to send you away happy.
What we do… or, more importantly, what we won’t do.
We work for you, not for Wayne. Sure, he pays us, but he pays us with your money… so, we won’t send you away sporting a new look when all you wanted was a trim… we won’t send you away with something we like, but you hate… we won’t roll our eyes and ignore you when you tell us what you want… we won’t sit you in our window with your hair all over the place… we won’t even expect you to drink second rate instant coffee while you’re with us. Call in and we’ll show you what we can do.
meet the team
Chloe – Not what she seems… or is she?
This girl is an enigma. A contradiction. She’s shy, but there’s a certain confidence lurking behind that apparent shyness.
Chloe loves the people she works with. In fact, when we asked her why she’s still here after six and a half years, she simply said “all my friends work here”.
The staff seem to love her too… and even more importantly, clients seem to love her.
When we did some digging, she had another reason that she still liked working with us. “I’m still learning… I’ll always be learning… and this is probably the perfect place to keep doing that” is what she said.
Wayne Chappell – Daddy – Boss… Teacher… Leader… Guru…. Golfer
Actually, you can cross out golfer… not the world’s greatest golfer. But he does seem to be good at fathering babies… oh, and hair. Not fathering hair! Styling hair!
Mind you, after 38 years in the business and 30 years running his own salon, you’d expect him to be getting it right by now.
Oh, and baby Hugo is no longer a baby. Hugo’s a legend… Hugo and Wayne? Sounds like a new salon name in the making!
Wayne has done some new shows since we last wrote about him… and was Hair Fashion Director for Dion Lee in Sydney and London. More than a decade of teaching probably says enough to grow his head another centimetre, so we’ll leave it at that, though there is more.
Apparently he wanted to be a policeman … can you imagine it?!!!! – standard issue blue uniform with studded belt; the hat at a jaunty angle and pearl handled six gun and sabre length pointed patent leather shoes) but his mum hooked him up with her hairdresser and he ended up here.
Bree – Ask her what the other staff call her. We’re not allowed to mention it!
Bree’s partner says she’s gullible. Trusting, honest and candid is how we see her… a little out of the ordinary. Quirky, solid, creative, balanced.
She’s a strange confliction of worldliness and innocence that means you can believe what she says, trust her with your secrets and be confident that she’ll do everything she can to make you happy.
Flamboyant and creative … based on first impressions, you’d expect her to be the sort of stylist that is into the fashion-hair competition-party scene…. but Bree would rather sit on the beach with a good book.
Her interests are reading (but you already know that); her work; which she takes very seriously; and her home, which she and her partner bought when Bree was still, a teenager! But this is to be expected. She does everything early. Wayne even signed off on her apprenticeship early… “because she was ready!”
She’s also now a Colour Trainer. You might have seen some of her extraordinary work on Facebook! Oh… and she has earned a Loreal Colour Degree with the highest score in Australia – 96%! She’s also officially a Loreal iD-Artist.
Just named as a finalist in Australian Hairdresser of the Year!!!!!

Jasmine – Fashion and creativity in her blood.
Hairdressing wasn’t Jasmine’s first choice. She decided that a Bachelor of Fine Arts was for her. So Uni, textiles and fashion beckoned. But, after moving out of home, there were bills to pay… and a social life to be had. So the interest in Uni waned. Time to get a job.
Her sister said ‘hairdressing … but Jasmine tried hard not to take her advice.
Turns out that her sister was not only right, but a pretty decent judge of hairdressing talent. Jasmine has just started her fourth year and she’s a finalist in the Hair Fashion Awards.
You’ll probably see her entry in Journal Magazine in the next couple of months. We’ll have a copy in the salon.
“It’s amazing what a colour change can do to someone’s mood and personality” she says. “Come and see me for a colour, even if you don’t need a change of style. And if you’re looking for a new style, I’ll be cutting in a couple of months… won’t I Wayne?:)”
“I love learning and Sfumato is the perfect place to do that. So thankful to be working in such a creative environment.”

Reviews
“Best hair experience I have ever had. Wayne listened to what I was after and gave great advice. Hence, a fabulous hair cut that is easy to manage, especially with a 3 month old baby.
I have found my salon :)”
“Sfumato saved me from a hair disaster!!!
I had gone to another hairdresser the day before who basically screwed up my hair. It made me feel completely insecure being seen in public… And you know it not a good sign when you’re patients kept asking you ‘what happened to your fringe?'(I’m a registered nurse).
I rang Sfumato in my lunch break to see if I could get in ASAP and they made time for me on the day! Loretta you did such an amazing job! I’m so happy with my cut! Thanks for helping me not look like a weirdo anymore! The customer service was also exceptional! I’m definitely making Sfumato my regular salon from now on!”
“While travelling for work I needed a last minute cut and scalp bleach. Fitted me in with their tight deadlines. Huge risk going to an unknown hairdresser, however …. Super amazing. Friendly and accommodating. Professional and courteous with excellent product knowledge.”
“Just brilliant. Always feel fabulous. Great colour and cut. Warm welcome from all the staff and the massage chairs just add to the relaxation”
“Jasmine styled and coloured my hair yesterday and I’ve never been happier with it! Thank you so much!”
