The Sydney Spine Institute is a multi-specialist centre focusing on the treatment of adult spinal conditions. It was founded in 2008 by A/Prof. James van Gelder and Dr Henry Lam. Ten years ago it became evident to both these clinicians that the field of spinal medicine was complex and no one particular specialty had all the answers. Patients with spinal problems require a multidisciplinary approach to their care. The Sydney Spine Institute was set up as a platform for clinical collaboration between different specialties in order to achieve better outcomes for patients.

The Institute’s other role is in education and sharing of knowledge. We hold monthly clinical and scientific meetings attended by specialists from spine related fields, medical researchers, academics and allied health professionals. Our aim is to keep up with the latest research and treatments, provide peer review and scrutinize patient outcomes.
