NSW Institute of Sports Medicine
The NSW Institute of Sports Medicine is a specialist public health facility providing assessment and treatment of sports injuries and a range of sports medicine related services. Established in 1994, the Institute provides over 19,000 occasions of service annually. Core clinical staff includes five medical consultants in orthopaedics, rheumatology and sports medicine, a physiotherapist, a physiotherapist servicing pulmonary rehabilitation, and a clinical nurse consultant and team for cardiac rehabilitation.
Sports Medicine clinics operate around four times per week and cater for recreational and elite athletes who are assessed by a team of medical consultants and physiotherapists. Ongoing physiotherapy is provided at the Institute as part of Concord Hospital’s outpatient services or by the Institute’s physiotherapy private practice. Additional services include cardiac, metabolic and pulmonary rehabilitation programmes and exercise classes.
The Institute houses two comprehensive gymnasiums including state of the art strength and endurance testing equipment. This includes the kin Com which is utilised for testing of strength in the upper and lower limbs. It is utilised for providing specific rehabilitation for any muscle group or joint. The Kin Com is utilised extensively to treat high profile athletes and teams as well as in research projects.
The Institute is dedicated to the teaching of physiotherapy and medical undergraduates. In addition each year, a rheumatology registrar and four orthopaedic registrars gain exposure to the sports medicine specialty through clinic responsibilities and orthopaedic surgery. The Institute also hosts overseas medical students for their elective term as well as post graduate students.
From time to time the Institute is involved with large research projects across the range of disciplines. These have included the Sydney University NHMRC funded hip fracture study, and a NSW Health Physical Activity Demonstration Project Grant of Central Sydney Area Health Service Health Promotion Unit. Institute staff provide content for popular medical publications and the media.
Institute Director, A/Prof Siri Kannangara was appointed Olympic Physician to the Australian Olympic team for the Barcelona and Atlanta Olympic Games and is Chief Medical Officer for Soccer Australia and member of FIFA Medical Committee.
Other current and recent sporting affiliations of clinical staff include, Australian Rugby, NSW Rugby, NSW Cricket, Sydney Olympic Soccer, Under 21 National Rugby League, Taekwondo Australia, Penrith Panthers Rugby League, Sydney Roosters Rugby League, Cronulla Sharks Rugby League, Parramatta Eels Rugby League, Canterbury Bulldogs Rugby League, Wests Rugby Union, Melbourne Storm Rugby League, Association of Professional Surfers, Wests Tigers Rugby League, Eastwood Rugby Union, Olympic Athlete Provider Program and official medical positions at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
