Our Team

Stuart McKay – Physiotherapist & Owner

Stuart is an Eastern Suburbs local, having attended Waverley College where a strong involvement in sport led to his first exposure to Physiotherapy. Following school he completed his Bachelor of Science (Health & Exercise) at the University of New South Wales followed by a Master of Physiotherapy at the University of Sydney. Stuart has always had a strong involvement in Sport, representing the University of NSW Cricket team in the Sydney Grade Competition; playing Rugby Union for Eastern Suburbs – before later becoming a Physio for the enemy, Randwick Rugby Club (2011-2016). He has also competed competitively at Athletics. Stuart’s personal and professional experiences have resulted in his pro-active approach to injury management. He uses a combination of manual therapy (massage, mobilisations, release), exercise and education as the core of his treatments. Stuart believes educating a patient about the injury, the recovery process and the treatment approach is just as important as the physical treatment. He believes rehab programs should be interesting and continuously upgraded or altered to challenge the patient and prevent them from becoming too repetitive. Stuart also offers Dry Needling for certain conditions as an adjunct to other treatments.

Prior to establishing Total Physiotherapy Stuart spent 5 years as a Physiotherapist in a busy Sports Injury Clinic in the medical precinct of Randwick Junction. Having worked closely with Orthopaedic Surgeons, Sports Physicians, GPs and other experienced Physiotherapists his experiences are reflected in the service offered at Total Physiotherapy.

In some cases aides can be provided to help manage your condition while you recover.
Orthopaedic Post-Operative Physiotherapy

Total Physiotherapy prides itself on the results its patient’s achieve in their Orthopaedic or post-operative rehabilitation. Being able to assist and get you moving in the period shortly after surgery and watching the progression as you get to the end-stages of rehabilitation and achieve your goals is a very rewarding experience. Prinicipal Physiotherapist Stuart McKay has spent his career working closely with leading Orthopaedic Specialists and has developed an excellent rapport with many of the surgeons operating in the area.  He is very experienced in post-op shoulder, back, hip, knee and ankle rehabilitation. Total Physiotherapy will guide you through the pre-operative and early post-op stages right through to the end-stages of your rehab. The clinic has been set-up to facilitate a successful recovery from your operation.
Physio for Back Pain

If you are experiencing back pain you are not alone, it is estimated that 70-90% of the population will experience low back pain at some point in their life. At Total Physiotherapy we are very experienced in managing back pain. Whether it is the early crippling effects of acute back pain or the limiting persisting symptoms of chronic back pain we will work with you to get you moving. We take an active approach to back pain, focused on relieving the pain and keeping you moving. Total Physiotherapy wants to give you the tools to be in control of your management. Education about your condition is therefore an important part of our treatment so you better understand what is going on and how it will get better. Depending on your presentation there is a range of manual therapy techniques we can use to help reduce your pain and restore mobility. We aim to get you moving as quickly as possible, all research suggests that getting moving early results in a much better prognosis and reduced period of disability. As with every condition we treat at Total Physiotherapy, prevention of future episodes is a core focus of your treatment.

Physio for Neck Pain

Neck pain is very prevalent in the population and when you think about how much we use our neck it is no surprise. Neck pain can be postural and build up over time, spending long periods looking at a computer, reading or even on your phone is not great for our poor necks. It is important to break these activities up by moving regularly and changing positions. Neck pain can also be traumatic, whiplash from a car accident or a blow to the head or neck while playing sport. No matter how you have ended up with neck pain, your physio will carefully assess your condition and work with you to settle the condition and return you to normal. Often your neck pain will also be associated with headaches or shoulder pain, by treating you with consideration to all of these things we can achieve the best outcome for you in a timely manner. Treatments we use that have good results in improving your neck injury are joint mobilisations to restore movement; reducing muscle spasm through soft-tissue therapy and restoring normal movement patterns.

Physiotherapy Management of Osteo-Arthritis

Arthritis is unfortunately a consequence of aging and often a reminder of what we have put our bodies through earlier in life. However it is not something we should surrender to and Physiotherapy can definitely help you manage the condition and slow its progress. It is important to have a full understanding of what will aggravate the condition and what you should be doing to reduce the symptoms and stay active. A relationship with a Physiotherapist who understands your condition and can help you manage it over time is invaluable.

Physio for Pregnancy Related Pain

Pregnancy is a very special and rewarding time, and with the changes that occur to a woman’s body during pregnancy and during the birth itself it is to be expected there will be some pain involved. Just as a physiotherapist can help an athlete with pain from what they have to put their bodies through, they can also help women feel more comfortable during this amazing experience. With a young son of his own, Principal Physiotherapist Stuart McKay has experienced first hand that it is not just through pregnancy but also the demands of having a young one – feeding, repetitive lifting, bending over – can leave you in need of some relief.

Exercise Prescription

With qualifications and experience in Exercise Physiology, Stuart McKay can prescribe, review or modify exercise programs to help you achieve a specific goal or help manage your injury or health condition. Whether you’re an elite athlete, want to complete a 10km run, or are looking to commence or alter your exercise to enjoy the many associated health benefits, Total Physiotherapy can support you.

Injury Prevention

One thing better than successfully treating an injury is to prevent it occurring in the first place. We understand that many injuries are unavoidable and a matter of bad luck, however there are certain injuries that occur amongst athletes that can be prevented or at least minimised. For this your Physiotherapist must have a detailed understanding of your sport or activity requirements and the injuries associated with that. From there they will consider your individual profile and injury history and plan with you strategies to reduce the risk and keep you training and competing at an optimal level.

Performance Optimisation

Having competed at high levels of cricket, rugby union and athletics himself, Stuart McKay understands what is required to take your performance to the next level. Playing and working with State and National level athletes has highlighted what is required to reach these levels. Having a strong support network that understands your sport, goals, training requirements and own personal situation is essential to success and a Physiotherapist can be a vital part of that network. Your Physiotherapist will monitor your loads, manage injuries, assist with strength and conditioning programs as required and prescribe programs tailored to improving your performance and technique.

Reviews

“The team at Total Physio Clovelly did a tremendous job looking after my elderly father who had been suffering a mysterious shoulder injury.

Stuart and his team were extremely thorough in investigating Dad’s concern and provided support for both short and long term relief.

Dad, who had never really approached a physio before, was so impressed with the care that was taken as well as the innovative methods of treatment that were provided.

Thanks Total Physio Clovelly for being so approachable and family friendly. Thanks for looking after Dad!”
