About ME

I trained as a Physical Education Teacher at UTS (Kuring-gai Campus) Sydney and have taught PE, Health and Personal Development for 25+ years in Department of Education High Schools. About 14 years ago an idea became a reality and then a love….while teaching, I studied and completed two internationally recognised Diplomas at NatureCare College, St Leonards, in Remedial Massage and Lymphatic Drainage and am currently to finish a Diploma in Myofascial Release. Both my Teaching and Massage qualifications have complemented each other enormously over the last decade plus.

My role as a teacher was to empower kids to make good decisions and to get involved in healthy activities, hence I was positively and indirectly affecting young people’s health. Massage, in contrast, positively and directly affects people’s health, with all hands on! I currently work full-time as a Mobile Massage Therapist and a Health / Spa Retreat Practitioner…a wonderful combination of health-oriented capacities to be immersed in.

The main reason I have chosen to conduct my own Massage business as a mobile practice is to provide a service for people who can’t or don’t want to go to a clinic or day-spa for various reasons. Some of the reasons include being time-poor, caring for young children, partners or family members, having a disability or simply not wanting to lose the relaxing effects of the massage on the drive home. Often people want flexibility in treatment hours and to chill immediately afterwards, or they just want to know the kids are nearby and fine in their own environment. Selfishly too, it’s a wonderful dynamic way for me to work in my beautiful, new home here in the Tweed as well as intermittently visiting and working in my original and other favourite place, the Northern Beaches of Sydney.

My qualifications include:

Bachelor of Education (Phys. Ed.)

Diploma Remedial Massage

Diploma Lymphatic Drainage

Diploma Myofascial Release (continuing)

Apply First Aid (Current)

Membership with AAMT (Australian Association of Massage Therapists)

Indemnity Insurance (Berkley)

Mobile Massage Therapy

Qualified in Remedial Massage Therapies and Lymphatic Drainage, I provide massage in the comfort of your own home. This allows the treatment to have greater efficacy as you will not have to drive home, and is especially convenient for people with any disability or injury preventing them from leaving their homes.

My Massage Techniques

Services

Swedish / Relaxation Massage ̴ refers to a variety of techniques developed in Europe in the 1700’s by Pir Henrik Ling, that soothe and relax the body by applying pressure and stroking the muscle along the fibres in the direction of blood-flow to the heart. It stimulates the skin and nervous system and yet soothes the nerves and reduces both physical and emotional stress by using hands, forearm or elbows along with special oils by therapeutic stroking and kneading of muscle tissue to promote stress relief. It is used to improve circulation, relieve muscle pain and tension, increase flexibility and induce relaxation. It combines three basic strokes to the skin: long, firm strokes, kneading strokes and small circles. This is the most requested and one of the most enjoyable massages.

̴ Remedial Massage ̴ is the tactile movement of soft tissue with therapeutic intent. It requires the systematic working of muscles and the soft tissues of the body to optimise the functioning of the various bodily systems. Many practitioners further their knowledge with other techniques to supplement and develop their own style for Remedial massages…I use Sports Massage, Trigger Point Therapy and Myofascial Release to achieve results on my clients. I find the combination of these techniques quite powerful when used together. Generally, the benefits are increased range of motion and flexibility, stress reduction and improved circulation, helping to achieve an overall feeling of well-being. Other conditions alleviated by massage include fatigue, insomnia, nausea, whiplash, localised pain from daily activities or degenerative diseases. In short:

….Sports Massage….involves a variety of techniques ranging from light or deep tissue strokes, compressions and jostling to stretching, cryotherapy (ice) and Lymphatic Drainage for the 4 different phases of sport: pre-event, post-event, maintenance and rehabilitation.

….Myofascial Release….involves the stretching and manipulation of the tough connective tissue layer which connects every muscle, tendon, ligament, bone and organ in our bodies. This layer can store memories of physical trauma and may hold tension or become misshapen over time. Using hands, the therapist applies a mild, sustained pressure that gently stretches and softens the fascia. The release of these restrictions may discharge recurring physical, and even emotional pain.

….Trigger Point Therapy….involves the compression of a painful spot (palpable nodule) on a muscle

to deactivate a chronic response, using fingers and/or thumbs. (A quoted defn: a myofascial trigger point is a hyper-irritable locus within a taut band of skeletal muscle and/or associated fascia. The spot is painful on compression and can evoke characteristic referred pain and autonomic phenomena) These spots can be caused by many factors, some quite serious, however, in remedial therapy it is a good treatment for tightness caused by postural, repetitive or prolonged muscle shortening causing this chronic change in the muscle.

̴ Lymphatic Drainage ̴ is a type of gentle massage which is intended to encourage the natural drainage of the lymph, which carries waste products and toxins away from the tissues back toward the heart. The lymph system depends on intrinsic contractions of the smooth muscle cells in the walls of lymph vessels (peristalsis) and the movement of skeletal muscles to propel lymph through the vessels to lymph nodes and then beyond the lymph nodes to the lymph ducts which return lymph to the cardiovascular system and out of the body via the Renal System. Manual lymph drainage uses a specific amount of pressure, rhythmic circular movements and directional strokes to stimulate this lymph flow.

Manual lymphatic drainage was pioneered by Danish Drs. Emil Vodder and Estrid Vodder in the 1930s for the treatment of chronic sinusitis and other immune disorders. While working on the French Riviera treating patients with chronic colds, the Vodders noticed these patients had swollen lymph nodes. In the 1930s, it was considered taboo to tamper with the lymphatic system due to the medical profession’s poor understanding of this system. The Vodders were not deterred by this and, in 1932, began to study the lymph system, developing light, rhythmic hand movements to promote lymph movement. In 1936, they introduced this technique in Paris, France, and after World War II, they returned to Copenhagen to teach other practitioners to use this therapy.

MLD is now recognized as a primary tool in lymphoedema management.
