What are the most common vision problems and who do they affect?

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Organization for the Prevention of Blindness jointly celebrate World Sight Day on the second Thursday in October since 2000. Its objective is to raise awareness about the different types of visual conditions, their treatments and how almost all of them are preventable or curable. Some 2.2 billion people around the world suffer from visual impairment or blindness, and of these, at least 1 billion could have prevented it, according to the first 'World Vision Report' recently published by the WHO. The head of the Ophthalmology Unit at Hospital Ruber Internacional (Madrid), Dr. Isabel Garabito, explains in an interview that the most common vision problems are refractive errors. In other words, "the need to wear glasses due to a poor focus of the images on the retina", clarifies the expert. Within refractive errors are myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia. In the first place, myopia "is the difficulty to see from afar and is associated, most of the time, with an eye that is longer than normal, which causes the image to focus in front of the retina", indicates Dr. Garabito . For its part, hyperopia consists of "difficulty in seeing, especially up close, because the eye is shorter than normal and the image is focused behind the retina", continues the expert.
