Blocked Drains or Toilets
Continually unblocking a drain affected by tree or plant roots will become a costly solution and my advice is that if the drain blocks in the same place more than twice it is time to call your plumber for a quote to replace that part of the drain that is causing the problem. It may create some inconvenience but in the long term you will save money and avoid a major blockage on the day you would least want it to happen. Imagine what it would be like on Christmas day, Easter Sunday or any public holiday with all your family and friends around. As they say the S… would hit the fan, literally.
Something I Have Learnt About Plumbing
Everybody thinks plumbers are expensive, but the trick to saving money is getting a plumber who can pinpoint the problem quickly. I’ve been wrong a few times, but 99% of the time I have been right and I have often saved someone a very expensive outlay just by being able to problem solve quickly. Okay you can do it yourself or try, thinking you’ll save a few bucks but most times you’ll either do more damage adding to the bill or you’ll just get it completely wrong. Do your pocket a favour and get a licensed plumber one you can trust and knows what to do. Don’t flush your money away!

PLUMBING
Diagnosing & Solving Water Hammer
If you’re annoyed by banging and hammering noises in your plumbing, you have a problem you want to fix as soon as possible, if only to save your sanity. Should you call the plumber immediately or is there something you can do to stop the noises on your own?
Bathroom Plumbing Problems
How To Avoid Plumbing Problems When Renovating Your Bathroom
Here are few things to remember when planning your bathroom renovation or relocating your bathroom.
Go to the Water Corporation and get a copy of your sewer plan commonly known as a Flimsy. This will show the outlay of your plumbing and where all the inspection points are positioned.
If you are relocating your bathroom you need your plumber to work out how he is going to get the new plumbing into the existing pipes. He will be governed by depth and location of the existing sewer pipes.
Remove any galvanised drainage pipes. Leave them there and you will experience ongoing plumbing problems as the pipes age.
Have your fixtures and tapware chosen when you get your plumber to quote your renovation. Fixtures like basins and pans have different set outs depending on the style.
Tapware have different styles also, so it wise to have chosen them before the plumber quotes avoiding any disagreements later on.
Ask your plumber for any tips or possible problems that may occur as the renovation gets underway. Plumbing can be expensive so best to know before you start avoiding any possible surprises.
I’d love to say your bathroom renovations will go just as you planned but as they say “the best laid …”
Good luck and if you need any advice on your bathroom renovation call me on 0411 423 216

Leaking Pipe
Think You Might Have A Burst Water Pipe?
Here is some helpful tips if you suspect you have a water leak or a burst water pipe. (plus it will help you save money when the plumber turns up)
Burst Water pipe
Turn all taps and sounds off in the house.
Put your ear to the wall and listen for the sound of water. (best in toilet or bathroom)
Go out to your water meter and check to see if the dial is turning. Normally located on the boundary on the left or right hand side.
Walk around the house and look for any unusual green grass or plant growth. (could also indicate a broken drain pipe)
Feel for hotspots on your concrete floor or brick wall.
Have a quick check to see if your hot water unit is leaking.

Hot Water
Servicing Your Hot Water Unit
How To Perform Routine Servicing
On Your Hot Water Unit Without A Plumber.
Frequently testing and changing your TPR valve can prevent your tank from bursting.
It’s not hard to forget exactly how much we rely on our hot water systems. Taking a shower, preparing food, washing up; most people only appreciate just how important their hot water tank is when it fails. Murphy’s Law determines that this generally happens in a very spectacular fashion, in the earliest hours of a really wintry Sunday morning when every plumber in your area is on breaks…
Hot water units might appear a bit complicated and mysterious, but like all other parts of your house they will benefit greatly from a little bit of routine maintenance. This is particularly the situation with hot water units – simply because continuous flow hot water units don’t store hot water and are less likely to build up any pressure, they require far less attention.
Effective servicing of your hot water unit is fairly easy, and can double or triple the effective life expectancy of your hot water unit. To take care of your system, there’s two main things you will need to consider:
• the sacrificial anode, and
• the temperature and pressure relief valve (TPR valve for short).
Blocked Drain
Blocked Toilet
Clearing A Blocked Toilet.
Well… Good luck! Seriously if you want to have a crack at clearing your toilet be prepared. You just might end up with a new coloured floor. Try This on your blocked toilet
First make sure it is only the toilet that is blocked and not all your drains.
Now you might have to head down to your local hardware store to get an old style mop. (you know the one that looks like hair)
Don’t buy a short handled one.
Now use it like a you would a kitchen plunger. Up and down, up and down, up and down.
If you’re lucky, you might clear it.
Blocked Shower
Blocked Shower Or Bath
Shower and baths are normally affected by the same thing. Hair and soap. Try this
Make sure you wear gloves and grab a torch.
Remove the grate carefully. (turn it anti-clockwise or clockwise gently until you feel it come loose)
Grab a coathanger or similar and put a little hook on the end.
Lower it down the pipe holding the torch at the same time and try hook onto the hair.
Gently pull the wire back-up and Bingo (did you get it)
Keep doing this until you have got it out or just becomes too hard.
Unblocking Your Kitchen Sink
Blocked Sink
Usually when your kitchen sink blocks it is because of cooking oil and grease. The best thing to try is plunging it.
Try this
If it is double bowl sink put a plug in one side.
Half fill the sink with hot water and add some detergent. (make sure you are wearing gloves)
You aren’t trying to make it frothy, just hot soapy water.
Now get your plunger like the one in the picture and pump it up and down.
The hot soapy water will help to clear it.
Keep doing this until it is clear or your too exhausted to go on.
