Yin Studio is a calm, relaxed home-based clinic, previously Cathy Bell Acupuncture & Massage, has built a solid reputation over the last 12 years and is widely recommended by GP’s, Chiropractors and Osteopaths in the local area. It is recognised by most major Health Fund Providers.

Yin Studio takes it’s name from the female yin energy.  The concepts of Yin and Yang are the cornerstones of traditional Chinese Medicine.

Yin symbolises sensitivity, acceptance, nurturing, slowness, intuition, relaxation, quietness and stillness. It is all about nourishment at every level – physical, mental and spiritual.

Yang symbolises light, activity, heat, rational and logical thinking, forthrightness, mental stimulation.

Ideally we want a balance of each of these as they support each other creating harmony of mind, body and spirit.

In this fast-paced modern world, we tend to aspire to more yang attributes such as working long hours, ambition, will power, less sleep, vigorous exercise, overactivity and excess mental stimulation.

This can lead to imbalances that manifest in ill health such as anxiety, depression, digestive problems, migraines, hormonal problems etc.

PERSONAL HISTORY:

Prior to working in this industry, I had always been a musician and worked in music-related fields such as radio, performing arts organisations like the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, music promotions and event management.

In my early twenties I suffered from a mystery illness that kept me bedridden for around four months.

After numerous blood tests and no improvement, acupuncture was recommended to me.  Within 4 weeks was back at work on the way to making a full recovery.

After this I sought acupuncture for many other issues; pregnancy, headaches, digestive issues and fatigue.

During this time I learned so much from my acupuncturist about the Chinese medicine perspective of health and was empowered to make improvements in my diet and lifestyle to enable optimum vitality and wellbeing.

The stress of my work then led me into having regular massages.  This inspired me to study remedial massage. Meeting clients with other health challenges that I coul

Massage treatments take place in a quiet space with warm oil and warm towels.  Soft lighting, candles and relaxing music create a blissfully peaceful environment to relax and unwind.
Yin Studio massages usually incorporate elements of the above types of massage techniques.

This depends on what your needs are and this is discussed at the beginning of the appointment according to your overall health, lifestyle, stress levels, medications and any other areas of concern.

REMEDIAL MASSAGE

Remedial massage is one of the most popular forms of massage therapy as it addresses the aches, pains and injuries many of us seem to fall prey to at some stage in our lives.

Remedial massage is a varied therapy and combines a number of different techniques such as massage, trigger points, myofascial release and lymphatic drainage techniques to work on damaged or sore muscles, soft tissue or joints.

We know that when we use our muscles a lot, they tend to grow bigger and stronger, or more resistant to fatigue.

However, during these usage and repair processes, unwanted substances may deposit between layers of muscle, particularly those muscles under constant use.

These muscle groups include the lower back, neck, and shoulders. These deposits can cause muscle fiber bundles to stick to each other, such that they cannot return to their default positions.

This causes a dull, deep pain.
With massage of the deeper tissues, you can relieve the pain caused by these muscular adhesions.

The mechanical pressure created by massage is enough to break apart these adhesions while also stimulating blood and lymph flow to eliminate those unwanted substances.
This type of massage is used to address a variety of illnesses including chronic pain, repetitive strain injury, carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoarthritic pain, and fibromyalgia (chronic overall muscle pain and weakness).

It is also used as part of the rehabilitation phase of recovery after physical trauma, such as falls, whiplash, and so on.
A typical session lasts for about an hour. While this may seem like a long time, it is necessary in order to apply the techniques to their full potential.

DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE

Deep Tissue Massage, as its name says, focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It is designed to reach the deep sections of thick muscles, specifically the individual muscle fibres.

Using deep muscle compression and friction along the grain of the muscle, the purpose of Deep Tissue Massage is to unstick the fibres of the muscles and release both toxins and deeply held tension points.

Specific hand positions and strokes are used to respond to various tissues while breath and movement techniques are employed to release muscular congestion.

It helps to loosen muscle tissues, release toxins from muscles and get blood and oxygen circulating properly.

It is both corrective and therapeutic. It is beneficial for many physical problems, including sports injuries and chronic pain.

Deep Tissue Massage usually focuses on specific areas and may cause some soreness during or after the session.

If the massage is done correctly however, you should feel better within a day or two.

Water helps to eliminate toxins from the body so it is important to drink plenty of water after a Deep Tissue Massage to help this process along.

REFLEXOLOGY

Reflexology treatments are gentle in nature, feeling much like a strong, foot massage. They work on many levels, soothing, calming, balancing and boosting the entire body.

Reflexology is based on the principle that congestion or tension in any part of the foot mirrors congestion or tension in a corresponding part of the body.

These parts, known as reflex points can also be found on the hands and other body parts, however, the most commonly treated area is the foot.

Reflexology helps to create a healthy harmonious state within the body and triggers the body’s natural powers of self healing.

Usually, after a treatment your tension may be reduced and you might feel relaxed. You might also notice yourself sleeping better and find your mood and sense of wellbeing improving.

You may also find that other aspects improve too; however, this happens on an individual basis.

ACUPUNCTURE

Millions of people around the world have found acupuncture to be a better solution than drugs or surgery.

With a 3,000-year history, acupuncture successfully addresses chronic ailments and manages pain.

MOST COMMONLY TREATED CONDITIONS INCLUDE:

Spinal conditions, lower back pain
Painful conditions (e.g., headaches, migraines, muscular-skeletal injuries etc.)
Fertility and women’s issues
Digestive issues
Autoimmune diseases, chronic fatigue

You don’t always have to choose between conventional medicine and natural therapies.

They can often work well alongside each other (In China, there are many hospitals where acupuncturists and doctors perform hospital rounds together to treat patients from each direction for the best possible outcome.

In fact, natural therapies are becoming very widely used these days with a recent survey revealing that 65% of Australians had used natural therapies within the previous 12 months.

The Discovery of AcupunctureThe Chinese discovered the circulatory system more than 2000 years before William Harvey did in the West in 1628.

The ancient Chinese had a very advanced scientific understanding of the body and how it worked, but they defined it in terms and symbols not known to those in the Western world.

The acupuncture theory of the ancient Chinese takes into account their deep understanding of the lymphatic, circulatory, vascular, and nervous systems.

They were able to influence all of these systems through their selection of acupuncture points on the 14 major pathways.
How Does Acupuncture Work?Acupuncture has three main theories describing how and why it works, and with the current advancements in science in the fields of biophysics, biochemistry, and physiology, we are now able to understand the complex mechanisms of acupuncture.
Neural Theory: Insertion of needles stimulates the nervous system releasing chemicals to either alleviate pain or affect the body’s internal regulating systems.

It stimulates nerve fibers to carry electrical impulses back to the brain increasing beta endorphin concentrations.  Recent MRI studies have proven this to be the case.
Electrical Theory: Research has shown that there is a higher electrical magnetic field around the acupuncture points than in the surrounding skin.

Chemical Theory: Research has found that needle insertion activates pain fibers in the skin.

These pain fibers trigger a cascade of chemical messengers, while sending signals to the spinal cord which relays information to the brain stem.

Acupuncture can be seen as a bridge that is able to affect and integrate different systems of the body, such as the nervous, endocrine, circulatory, muscular and digestive.

Because of these broad effects, acupuncture can create profound changes in the body.

So, to put it simply, Acupuncture taps into the nervous system and stimulates the body’s own intrinsic resources – healing from the inside out.

Just like the brain doesn’t utilise it’s full potential, neither do the body’s own healing mechanisms.

The needles help your body make it’s own medicine, giving a surge to your own natural healing resources, allowing it to get the upper hand.

Over the last ten years, I have seen the wisdom of this ancient Chinese medicine, which understood the connections between the body, mind and spirit, transform people.

The World Health Organisation has deemed acupuncture a useful form of primary-care medicine for the following types of conditions:

“Kathy is one of the most incredible practitioners I have ever met. Kathy was recommended to me after my husband and I had spent a year of trying to get pregnant. Not only was I pregnant within two months (!? amazing!) of visiting Kathy, but I learnt so much about the multilayered aspects of mind-body health. Kathy has an amazing and very intuitive way of translating complicated Chinese Medicine principles into simple and relevant information that I can apply in my every day life. I honestly could not speak more highly of her and wish there were more stars i could give! We are expecting a healthy daughter in June 2017 – thank you Kathy, xoxox”

She is warm, caring and considerate – , making appointments is easy with online booking. Within a few treatments, the pain is pretty much gone.

Her insight into Chinese medicine was fascinating and I walked away from each appointment having learned something new.
