Services

Sports Injuries

Participating in sporting activities is great for your overall well-being. It’s fun, it’s motivating, and it’s keeping you fit. If you’ve injured yourself doing the very thing that is keeping you healthy, you want to get back to it in the quickest, most cost-effective way possible.

Injury in sport can occur due to a specific incident or due to repetitive stress of a particular part of your body. A typical injury might involve a sprained ligament, a strained muscle, a swollen joint, an inflamed nerve or a fractured bone.

We can offer you an accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and experienced guidance to return to your previous activity, and prevent it happening again. Call us for advice – you will probably feel better after just one treatment, and we can tell you what you need to do to get back to full fitness.

Work Related Injuries

Injuries can occur in the work place, while travelling to and from work or during any work-related social activity. Injuries can be of an acute nature like heavy lifting or falls, or from postural problems or repetitive mechanical stress like sitting at a computer.

At Darlinghurst Physiotherapy we accurately assess, diagnose and treat work-place injuries using firm connective tissue massage, joint mobilisation and/or manipulation and our educational skills to assist you in understanding what has gone wrong and what stretches and strengthening exercises can be done to help you fix the problem yourself.

We work closely with general practitioners and insurance companies to ensure that appropriate management is provided to you for your recovery and return to work. We also provide advice and education regarding prevention from further injury, ergonomic and work-place assessment and graduated return to work if necessary.

All work-related injuries have to be reported to your employer or human resources department and they will ask you to complete the appropriate paper work. Your doctor can provide a WorkCover certificate and referral for physiotherapy. We are happy to bill your employer’s insurance company.

Neck Pain

There are a number of structures in the neck which can contribute to neck pain. These include muscles, joints, discs and nerves. The onset of neck pain can occur for a number of reasons including poor sleeping position, poor work posture, whiplash, and degenerative changes.

Problems in your neck can also cause pain radiating along the course of your arm or into your head. This is often associated with symptoms of numbness, pins and needles and a feeling of heaviness or weakness.

Treatment for neck pain is likely to include massage, joint mobilisation, stretching and strengthening exercises, and teaching you how to correct poor posture or abnormal movement patterns. If you need an X-Ray performed we can refer you for one under Medicare.

Headaches

Headache affects approximately two-thirds of the population through a number of differing causes. The most common causes are viral illness, migraine, cervical headache and stress/tension headache. Physiotherapists can determine whether your headache is coming from structures in your neck.

Headache of cervical origin can be located at the base of the skull, behind the eyes or in the temples, or even at the top of your head. If we can find tender points in your neck we can certainly help. This problem is most frequently related to poor postural positioning of your neck.

Treatment usually involves massage of tightened muscles, mobilisation of stiff joints in the top of your neck, and teaching you the appropriate stretching and strengthening exercises to improve your flexibility and correct your posture. You will probably feel better straight away.

Back Pain

Low back pain is extremely common and affects most people at some stage in their lives. It can be extremely debilitating, and if you don’t manage it properly the first time, it can affect the quality of the rest of your life.

There are a number of causes of low back pain which include disc bulge, joint irritation, muscle spasm, ligament sprain and stress fracture. Problems in your low back can also produce pain that radiates down your leg towards the foot, which is commonly known as sciatica.

With careful assessment, we can determine exactly what you need to do to relieve your pain, promote healing, avoid further damage, and get back to your normal activities. Rest alone has been shown to be poor advice. We can show you the quickest way to long-term recovery.

Massage

At times of high stress we can find ourselves tight and rigid, often leading to poor postures and unhealthy movement patterns. This could increase the risk of further injury.

If you have a specific injury or persistent pain in one area of your body, we recommend you see one of our physiotherapists first. If you’re looking for a firm, full body massage, feel free to make an hour-long, Thursday or Saturday appointment with our Ben.

Massage helps to relieve muscle tension and release the build up of waste-products within the muscle. It also assists with improving range of motion and increasing circulation to damaged tissue. Massage helps restore normal muscle tissue function through the use of firm pressure or stroking using a lubricant, or through trigger point release, or relaxation techniques.

Reviews

“Good physio

“I frequent this physio centre often since Andrew Olson has managed to keep my problem areas in check. They go by 30 mins appointments and they tend to be running on time which is pretty good when you need to check-in on your lunch break. If you have any physical issues this is the place to go to!”

“I have never been to see a physiotherapist I was sceptical about going, but after a slight sporting injury i was referred by a friend to the Darlinghurst Physiotherapist Clinic and was delighted by the service I received. Having not grownup in Sydney it is often hard to know where to start looking for specialists such as physios and after a few bad experiences its natural to be hesitant but the staff here were lovely, very warm and friendly, making me feel completely calm and relaxed. I was there for a pretty minor injury so cant really comment on the range of services they offer, but the clinic was light, fresh, very clean and well equip with the latest magazines so even if you are waiting for a little while you have something new to read! If youre in the market for a physio i highly recommend visiting.”
